The Otun Quimbaya nature reserve has a pioneering ecotourism programme run by a community organisation called Yarumo Blanco, ensuring that the tourism is sustainable and positive for both the environment and the local community. Only a small part of the reserve is accessible, and the footpaths can only be used with a guide. We booked a 2 day/1 night plan through their website which included one group walk through the reserve, one private night walk, and one private guided walk to the Cascada Los Frailes, as well as three meals and accommodation. Along the walks we saw howler monkeys, frogs, lizards, squirrels and a huge variety of birds, including a toucanet. The guides were excellent, and in particular the night walk was an amazing experience - we spent some time in silence in the dark, just listening to the sounds of the forest, and the guide also talked about the pre-columbian/indigenous significance of the area. The food was good - Colombian dishes such as Ajiaco, huevos pericos, fresh fruit juices etc. Although you can't walk into the reserve on your own, the grounds of the hotel have plenty to see - we spotted lots of birds including the Cauca guan, as well as an Andean fox. The staff were friendly and helpful.
