513 reviewsWe stayed for 5 nights and loved it. Yes, Tenderloin is full of homeless people but very few were begging, most paid no notice of us at all. The neighborhood has plenty of good local food options without the tourist prices. The room was small but comfortable, clean with hotel quality housekeeping each day, secure and bright. The communal areas had comfy sofas, quirky artwork with a nod to the 20s heritage of the place and WiFi was fast and free. I've seen some reviews complaining about breakfast - I'm not sure what they were expecting but this is the best hostel breakfast I have ever had! Sure, you get more choice in a hotel, but most hostels that advertise a 'free continental breakfast' give you stale cornflakes with long life milk and cheap bread. Here we had a choice of bagels, wheat or sourdough bread with jam, pb or cream cheese. Decent enough coffee, juice or a choice of teas, soy milk if needed, oats, fruit and for $1 you could have 4 eggs or 4 pancakes or 2 of each, cooked fresh in front of you. Now that is value!! 10 minutes walk got you on the BART, cable car or tram, 1 minute walk got you on the bus, 20 minutes walk to Chinatown or 30 mins to the wharf - it's great value for a slightly seedy but central location - we will be back.
