Great pub warm fires lit toasty inside.

Stout well kept stayed for 2 hours.

Friendly landlord chatty and knowledgeable.
A nice pub to visit recommended clean decent clientele usual Sam Smiths no noise or tv/music.
I have been using the pub got over 30 years on and off.

I wish I could give more than 5 star, this place is a little gem! Mike, Jan, Archie, Tegan, Connor and Dawn are a credit to Sam Smith's. They couldn't do enough for you, they are so polite and put you at ease as soon as you walk in. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have everything you require for your stay. The breakfast is gorgeous and Mike and Jan serve you with a big smile. The drinks are fabulous, my husband loved the extra stout and the Taddy lager went down a treat with me. They are a great team at the Seahorse and we can't wait to go back x

Stayed for races, good stay friendly staff  management. Clean tidy friendly local.
The only problem was three blokes that couldn't stick to sams rules, and were looking for trouble. By the sounds of it they've been before so why come again ??? If they don't like it. I guess " backwards and dirty " review was theres as a type of revenge how childish can you get. the staff and management handled it well. Well done all. Thanks for a great stay.

we stayed here for a few days to visit family and enjoy historic york. we were not expecting a great deal at the hotel but was pleasently surprised. friendy welcome from the staff/management. real fires made the place feel homely, the beer was excellent the best pint of old brewery i've had in a long time. the locals were very chatty. 
when we went to our room we were quite happy, clean, tidy and warm, beds are really comfy the room / bathroom were spotless, the bathroom look brand new. breakfast was good cerials, full english, toast, juice tea coffee prompt service so we were not hanging around.
the only drawback is sam smiths rule not tech down in the pub, no tv in the rooms, but who goes away to watch tv. they have free wifi so you can stream if you want to in your room. but at the end of the day to much to do in york to be messing around streaming in your room. had a great time will be back

Another stay at the Seahorse, again fabulous stay good breakfast clean and warm rooms. Management and staff brilliant nice coal fires ( real aswell)  near the town centre 2mins walk to barbican round corner. Even free parking which is a bonus. Cheers guys

Great few days stay and a great little gem found in York. Very cost effective for a stay in that area, 10 mins or so to city centre. Very good breakfast and the Landlords were very good and tentative as well. Comfy spacious room, comfy bed, heating great, clean, tidy, and would definitely stay again. Free parking too... Happy teddy, :-)

Sea Horse Hotel, York 

We went for a day in York, and booked in at the Sea Horse Hotel. Very reasonable rates for bed and breakfast for two in this historic location. 

The hotel is almost next door to the Barbican, and just over the road from Clifford's Tower, and Dick Turpin's (alleged) grave. It's easily walkable to the other parts of York. 

Check-in was scheduled for 14:00, but we arrived at about 12:30. There's a small car park at the rear, accessed through a tunnel. 

We were met by a friendly landlord who gave us the necessary information, and we were allowed into our room immediately. 

The room was clean and tidy, and straightforward, as it had been described when we booked. There's no TV, but there is free wifi, though we didn't use it, as we only found the password when we were packing to leave. The lack of a TV was not detrimental to our stay. The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate, with a small shower cubicle. 

We spent the afternoon and early evening in York, returning to the Sea Horse around 20:00. There was a real open fire blazing in one of the rooms, and it was lovely and warm. We spent the remainder of the evening toasting and drinking in the bar. As this is a Sam Smith's pub, there are certain rules, and no mobile phones is one of the rules. We're both happy with this, as we feel there's too many people all reading their phones, and not conversing. 

There's another two rooms, both have open fires. Unfortunately one was out of action at the time of our stay. 

We enjoyed the conversation with the locals about Freda and Greta, the famous York twins, and other guests, and retired to a good night's sleep on a nice soft bed. 

The website states it's cash only in the bar, but this has been relaxed and card payment was accepted while we were there. 

Breakfast was 08:00 to 09:00, and check-out time was 10:00. The breakfast comprised sausage, egg, bacon, beans, black pudding and toast, with fruit juice and tea or coffee. It was a very nice breakfast, well cooked. This was in the rear room, and again there was a roaring fire in an old range, keeping everyone warm. 

An enjoyable stay, and we'd be happy to stay here again.

Stayed here last night with my friend as had tickets to York Barbican.  What an absolutely great place to stay.  Room was lovely and warm and welcoming  Fab bathroom too.  Hosts were really friendly and accommodating as we wanted veggie sausages for breakfast.  Great stay, walking distance to main shopping area and a stone’s throw from Barbican.  Absolutely reasonable rates. Will definitely stay again, loved it!

We stayed for a couple of nights to visit friends and look round York. The location is excellent for walking to the city centre. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the beer in the bar great. We’ll stay here again next time we visit.

Perfect stay.

we popped in to get out of the rain. Lovley real fires locals freindly and freindly staff. quite refreshing no technology aloud so had to talk to people. So no mobiles aloud brewery policy, signs around the pub saying this. It seems alot of pubs are doing this now not just sams. Unfortunately, couple of ladies in the front bar did'nt like it, but its the brewery rules, so why take it out on the staff. anyway we enjoyed ourselves. Great time, good beer and real fires what more do you want.

The bedroom was huge, the beds were comfy and everywhere was clean. We read the website info before going so knew it is a digital detox chain so we went prepared with an iPad for watching tv in the room after we spent some time in the family lounge playing cards, having chats and enjoying a drink (or 2). The value for money on this place is excellent and I will happily use the hotel again! Just a 10 minute walk from the main tourist part of York. My only slight grumble is the road noise but that was more down to inconsiderate drivers treating the road outside like a race track between 11pm and 1am (ish). Sash windows just aren’t designed for keeping screeching car noise out.
