very pleased with this hotel, ok, it's like stepping back in time, if you want ultra modern with designer furnishings, then this is not for you, if however, you want clean rooms, a good breakfast and good service then I thoroughly recommend it, very reasonably priced, good base for exploring Yorkshire, with York City 20 mins away, some good local pubs and places to eat in Tadcaster 

I found this hotel through the Sam Smith's website when looking for somewhere to stay in the area. I have to say I was very impressed with the service. The lady that checked me in went through to usual information about breakfast etc. and when she found out I would be leaving before breakfast the next morning went out of her way to show me where the cereal etc. was. She then went on to tell me where is best to eat in the evening etc. Really helpful and I was shown to the room which was large, warm and very clean and comfortable. Everything you could want in a stay really. If I had to say anything negative the bathroom could do with an update. That said everything worked as it should and again all was very clean. I'd defiantly stay here again if I was in the area.

I'm seeing a lot of reviews of the Shann House here that say it's a bit Spartan and olde Englishe. Friends, that's the point!

We reavelled to Tadcaster because I wanted to drink Samuel Smith's beer in draught-only varieties we can't get in the States at the pub nearest to the brewery. The added benefit was that on this European trip we're constantly in large cities and tourist activities, and we had had only a couple of hours in smaller, rural towns--a day and a half in Tadcaster provided just a little bit of a different perspective.

Shann House is one of several old-style inns that Samuel Smith's operates around the region. We have issues with climbing stairs, and were accomodated with their first-floor room--if your knees are also bad, make that request.

The building dates, I think, from the 18th century, and they've done a job of keeping enough of the old while nodding to the new. Your bathroom will be similar to what you'd find at chain hotels, your bedroom will be true to tradition--no TV. No A/C. Happily, plenty of electrical outlets for your devices and free wi-fi. A chifferobe, a nice comfy bed.

Get the breakfast included in your stay. Our hostess prepares the fry-up fresh when you're ready, and experiencing a first-rate English style breakfast ought to be part of your stay.

Stay here and get away from the 21st century for a spell. It's good for you!

Stayed for one night - group of 4 friends - the lady who runs the hotel was very friendly and welcoming. Lovely clean room with crisp white bedding. Breakfast was very relaxed and was very tasty too. Will definitely return.

This is a large, spotlessly clean, warm and very comfortable if basic hotel. The location was ideal for visiting our son in Tadcaster, but also only a short bus ride to York. The breakfast was large and delicious, the ladies who run the place were very friendly and welcoming too. Tadcaster is an interesting little town despite being so small. We are hoping to make a return visit in the summer and will very likely be back to Shann House. If some money was spent on this beautiful old house it would be a real stunner!

We booked the room about 9 months previously with Kay by email , very quick and easy to book , we arrived on the day of my friends wedding and where met by Kay , she took the money and showed us to the room , gave us the keys , the free WiFi code and some very helpful advice on local taxis and a local pub to watch the boro game , very friendly and helpful , the room was clean and tidy , bed was comfortable , hotel lovely and warm , tea and coffee making facility’s , fresh towels laid out on the bed , idea for what we needed which was a cheap and cheerful bed for the night , 
The next morning we got up for breakfast , rooms where still toasty warm ,  cooked breakfast was canny , a good start to the day to soak up the hangover lol , plenty of fresh orange , choices of cereal porridge etc if you didn’t want a cooked breakfast too , 
All in all great value for the money paid in comparison to others I priced up which where double the cost , would certainly stay here again

We stayed during Midsummer.  It really looks like a disused place, covered in scaffolding and netting but actually inside it has a really homely feel.  The rooms are big, with very comfy beds, kettle, tea/coffee, and lovely high windows which let in a lot of light (I believe, when the scaffolding has gone!) and the cleanliness was excellent.  Okay the bathroom could do with some care and attention but only because it's past its best.  The work being done on the hotel will help it immensely.  Don't expect too much from breakfast.  Orange juice, cereal, toast and bad coffee but there is a Costa at the end of the street if you need a proper caffeine fix.

I find writing this a little awkward. I know only too well of the stronghold that the Smiths have on their business and that should not reflect on their staff. Whom I have to say were lovely and welcoming and do an amicable job under the circumstances. 

So considering this is a review on my stay, I need to keep to the subject matter. Most have mentioned ' basic ' and I agree. For the money paid for one night it does fall short of the mark. Considering you can stay at a 'lodge' for much less.

If you are visiting the town for a reason, then there isn't a lot of options unless you wish to travel. So the Shann House can be very well located for you. Walking distance to everything in Tadcaster. 

The room size was good, very warm. I must also commend them on the beds. Probably one of the best I have actually slept on. The shower however was a different story. A shameful trickle . Its the one thing I mark a stay on, the quality of the shower. A basic that must be right. Along with that is a TV , that is tuned in. On this occasion though, that bit is easy because their isn't one.  Again in 2019 in England it is a ridiculous oversight not to have one. 

The breakfast was fine and did the job, lacking a bit of refinement but cooked well. A better coffee option wouldn't go a miss. Even filter coffee, not instant though! NO NO.

The whole place was spotless, and from what we saw well kept and looked after. The building is old, and would with some imagination make an amazing and welcoming ' Boutique' hotel. A word often overused but would suit this grand old building.

I declare I am originally from the town and have seen the changes over the years. Non for the better. Again this is not a reflection on the service provided nor the people working and managing here. 

To summarize and to quote ' for one night only ' it is OK. However, with Wetherby not far away and the draw of Leeds or York it is a wonder how this place survives.Those locations should certainly be investigated for overnight accommodation.

This place is basic but comfortable and the staff are lovely.  Breakfast is cooked fresh and it’s lovely.  No TV in the room but we knew this before we booked.  Beds were comfortable and the sheets were nice and crisp.  Wardrobe wasn’t checked after the last guest as there was clothing in it.  But all in all value for money. 

Good Location 

This guest house,(it isn't remotely a hotel), has much going for it  but needs improvement in many areas. The building is a  beautiful Georgian townhouse, situated in the midst of similar properties opposite the ancient church.  This does mean no adjacent parking but there is ample free parking just behind.  Cars do race past on Kirkgate which is one way but it is not too busy. There are 4 steep steps to the front door.  You have to phone for entry.

The rooms are large, slightly shabby with old fashioned furniture but the beds are comfortable with crisp linen and good quality duvets and towels and toiletries. There is one ground floor room, otherwise it is upstairs via shallow steps.  This house makes little concession to guests with mobility issues and does not provide handrails.

Breakfast is available for one hour and is more than adequate.  Orange juice, several kinds of cereals, fresh toast and mass catering packs of butter,j am and marmalade.  Each breakfast is cooked to your individual order from the usual selection .  The full english would satisfy the largest appetite. You make your own tea or coffee from a limited selection of instants.  Nescafe and no earl grey.

The staff were friendly and helpful if asked and dealt with my party's sometimes difficult demands with calm acceptance and efficiency.

My family come from the area and I felt at home as if I was back in the 1950's.
