The George Inn

We Stayed in the local area and booked evening meals throughout the week. Charles was very polite and interesting clearly well travelled man. We enjoyed our meal so much the first night we returned every night there after. The service was excellent and not mainstream. 
We loved everything about this quaint village pub ...... well worth a visit .

spent weekend here for a short break, very relaxing.  Room was very comfortable and well equipped, we had breakfast and evening meals during our stay all of which were really good, with very generous portions, you wont leave hungry. good spot for exploring yorkshire dales with excellent hospitality. ideal if looking for a quiet spot to explore yourkshire.

This was our first stay at the George and we had a wonderful time there, being very well looked after by Charles. There are only two rooms, housed in an annex a few steps away from the inn, both being en suite. Both the room and the en suite are of a very high spec, with tea/coffee/biscuits laid on which is a nice touch. The rooms are cleaned daily. The rooms had free WiFi (though we couldn’t get WiFi in the pub, which was good as we spent the evenings talking to the other guests!)

The breakfasts are fantastic - locally sourced ingredients e.g. for full English, scrambled eggs and salmon, croissants are amongst the options - I can see why they’ve won awards for their breakfasts! 

We also had our evening meals at the George. Pub staples (curry, lasagnes, scampi, chicken pie etc etc - all cooked really well and generous portions (delicious!). The beer was also really well kept. 

The pub is only small with a few friendly locals so not rowdy at all. It is also dog friendly. It’s off the beaten track so was a great find, being around 7miles from Leyburn.

Just returned from a lovely 2 night break at The George Inn. Our room was clean, bright,comfortable and warm. Excellent choice of tea, coffee and hot chocolate on the tray and also complimentary Sherry, grapes and chocolates which was a lovely extra. The bathroom had little extras like shampoo, toothbrushes, makeup wipes etc. We ate on both nights in the pub and couldn’t fault the food on offer. The breakfast on both mornings was excellent too with lots of choice. The owners Charles & Becci were accommodating, friendly and welcoming. The location is great for walking or driving around the area. We look forward to a return visit soon 😊

If anyone wants a place to stay to explore the dales then the George Inn is excellent. A small village in between the dales near to Aysgarth Falls. The food is superb and the hosts are truly the best we have encountered. Facilities are second to none.
We will definitely be coming back.

We were hiking by and needed sustainment, so we dropped in: Attentive friendly landlord, with great attention to detail. Super clean toilets, warm too and well kept, cosy bar area. And dogs more than welcome. Would love to have stayed longer, another time it will have to be.

Great choice of food, all with their unique tastes. Generous portions. Lovely country pub full of character. Offers a wide range of drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Worth a visit. Set in the lovely village of Thoralby, near West Burton.

Delicious wholesome pub food 

We have just spent one night here when we had booked three! The description and photos are misleading because the only two rooms available are outside in an annexe and not upstairs as you might expect in pub accommodation.  Although the rooms are well appointed,there is a very thin wall between the two rooms so you can actually hear the words spoken on their tv programmes, hear people talking, hear if someone flushes the toilet or switches on the tap! Obviously the same applies to anyone staying next door!  The room was a small bedroom with one dining room size chair so if you want to watch the tv you need to perch on the bed which was higher than usual so I found that difficult.  Well ok but then we and the guests next door were woken at 5am with a loud vibrating noise which occurred twice more within 2 hours. The two guests next door and ourselves had had enough and so we all booked out after one night. The food was excellent but we didn't feel welcome and that was partly because of a strict timetable which made us feel like we were in the way!  

Too much noise!

Our airbnb owner (who has the property we rented for a week in Thorably) told us that we'd probably not have the warmest of welcomes at the George Inn (from what he'd been told by his previous guests) but we were taken aback by the frosty reception we received (2 adults and 2 children) at this pub. 
I think it must a 'hobby pub' with no real commercial requirement (i.e. to get customers) as it is closed most of the week Monday to Thursday I think and the place was empty when we visited and can understand why (the signs 'No Muddy Boots' and 'No Dogs' greet you on the door). 
We were however met by not a flicker of a smile and a positive air of 'what do you want' with no good bye when we left (even as the only people in the pub) and a scowl whist we were there. I think this is a pub for a handful of locals only from what we observed when we walked past the window during that rest of our stay in Thorably. 
We found a very friendly place 20 minutes walk south though so all was well for our holiday evenings in the end.

Most unwelcome feeling we've ever experienced in a pub

Whilst staying in Thoralby last week, we thought it would be nice to eat at the local pub so our group of 8 walked along there for a drink in the evening with thoughts of booking for another evening. As we walked in, there was no smile or greeting from (I’m assuming) the owner/landlord. He served us drinks but we felt very unwelcome. However, my husband still enquired just before we were leaving whether we could book to eat another night. He asked how many for, when my husband said it was for 8 of us, he said they didn’t  take groups of more than 6. I do not know what what he would have said if we had booked two separate groups of 4 as we just left and took our business to The Wheatsheaf at Carperby where we got excellent friendly service and good food.
