My friend & I recently had a weeks stay in The Dovecote.
A cosy,comfortable & well equipped cottage.
The log burner was a bonus on cool nights. 
Great restaurant(The Stonemill) on site too.
Only downside was that WiFi connection wasn’t accessible. (We managed with mobile phone access)


Gifted a "Sleepover" offer at Xmas from our family  for 1x night stay to include onsite Restaurant meal and continental breakfast hamper.

We saw no evidence of the negative comments posted on this site previously. Cottages extremely comfy, warm and spotless ,no musty smells and no electric charge for the time we were there. Hand soap and shower gels provided and a welcome tray ready on arrival with milk in fridge!  Hosts hospitable ,welcoming and went out of their way to help  and all staff cheerful and polite.
Restaurant itself within a few steps across the courtyard and had character and a relaxed  ambiance. The   meal was outstanding and such a bonus not to drive home-more glasses of top class wines could be consumed !

In the morning a bountiful breakfast hamper was fulfilling and charmingly presented in a wicker hamper with most of the  products home produced .

All in all everything first class, and thoroughly recommended

What can we say lovely clean cottages , comfortable beds , wonderful people . Restaurant staff are lovely , thank you Jared and staff for putting up with our loudness . We had a cottage here for a night as we wanted to explore the forest of dean. Have to say the cottage itself is really nice and the way it's done has a really nice Victorian feel to it. The location itself is also good as it is away from the village and the host lives nearby so can get hold of them really easily. The host also really friendly and welcoming. Forest is a bit of a drive but worth it. The only issue is the internet and mobile network really bad but overall definitely recomend it. 

Let's get this straight from the off ... the wifi is questionable...middle of nowhere and as far as paying for the electricity,  we'll say no more.

Now the plus. Creeps under your skin. The cottages feel like a comforting mother, on this occasion , dare I say, not what we were expecting but just what we needed . Family gathering of 12. Mixture of adults and kids . Lovely beds and must say bedding, kitchens were well equipped and the log burner added a lovely feel to the whole stay . 48 hours to quieten the mind ... just enough. 

So overall not modern faceless slick type of stay but something with a bit more feeling .

22 members of our family were accommodated in 6 "cottage-like properties, in their individual family units. Very clean, comfortably furnished and the kitchens  adequately equipped, though not up-to date. We too found them musty on entering but after airing and warming the atmosphere cleared quickly. Rustic comfort. Made very welcome by the owners, although one needed to be tolerant at first of the husband's directness. He turned out to be well informed and helpful. Two improvements would ,for us, have given Stepps Farm 5 stars. Nowadays we would not expect to have to use a coin box for electricity. A small extra charge per day would be more acceptable, included in the rent. 3 families thought the mattresses on the double beds in their unit were overdue for replacement. A huge bonus on the site was the restaurant run by the owner's daughter and husband. It really deserves its accolades. We will go there again.

The site is beautifully maintained and we had a very warm welcome from the owner. The cottage smelt a little musty when we entered but the kitchen was spotless and well equipped. The bedding was pristine. And we would stay again with no hesitation . Thank you for a lovely stay .

Fabulous Stay

Very Cosy Cottage 

Beautiful location with vintage country charm

I wanted to leave this as I don’t think the previous reviews were very fair. Me and my family (2 kids 6&9) just returned from a long weekend stay here. No it is not the height of luxury but In honestly I did not assume it would be when I booked. We stayed in the dovecote and it was exactly as I imagined it would be, full of character and harm but on the small side as cottages usually are. The bed sheets and linen were all perfectly clean and the cottage itself was spotless when we arrived. Yes there was a slight smell of damp as the other reviews have mentioned however this is pretty standard for properties of this age. We had a very warm greeting from the owner and we’re made to feel very welcome. We didn’t have the opportunity to eat at the Stonemill restaurant but it looked very busy and everyone seemed very happy when we passed it! My kids loved the rural experience and getting the chance to see chickens too. The kitchen was well equipped for everything we needed however we ate out most nights so really only used it for breakfast. All in all I would say that it was priced well for what it was- if you want a more luxurious stay then check in to a hotel. Would I stay again- probably not but purely because I do like a bit of luxury and not because there was anything wrong with the cottages they were beautiful.

Honest review

Stayed here 28th September for 5 nights on business with a colleague. House was cold first day but soon warmed up the next . Rooms and beds ok shower very small and unpredictable.
The oven was very dated and took ages to warm up .
General good stay but can’t get my head around paying for a meter every day £5 on top of the £750 we paid for the time there it’s unheard of and very greedy. Lovely area for piece  and quite and not far from town 
But if you do stay just make sure you take some warm cloths and £££ coins

September 28th stay 2021

Firstly the place is beautiful, well kept and very well furnished to the country setting.

I travel a lot on business and have to say that on arrival I was very impressed. The 3 bed cottage we had was beautiful with the old timbers, white washed internal stone walls and solid wood furniture... parking is great and the landscaped gardens really set a welcoming scene as a first impression. 

My only comments following our stay are:
1. An electric meter cheapens the experience and adds that unwelcome 'pay the bills mindset all the time which I for 1 like to escape when staying away from home
2. The stairs have a curtain across at the top which for a family with young kids is an accident waiting to happen ... a door at the top would be much safer and again a curtain just looks cheap compared to the rest of the furnishings.
3. There was no welcome pack but there are signs everywhere in the cottage and I felt like big brother was watching like a George Orwell Novell ... it was like you couldn't relax without having to be told the rules everywhere you looked.
4. I agree with other people's comments about the electric meter ... it cheapens the place in my opinion and they would be better set to match the class of the buildings just building this into the fees. Also if people are on a meter then LED bulbs or energy savings should be in the many lights and lamps. Our electric went off in the night on Friday and our youngest was terrified of the dark ... with no emergency lights and the curtain at the top of the stairs this could have been an accident waiting to happen ... I am not sure if the fridge was affected by the coin meter also but if so I would be concerned with the food hygiene concern of inconsistent food refridgeration again with young kids ... i would suggest lose the meters and just include electricity in your rates as most other places do ..
5. I know it's a country setting but the dead flies in the glassware and having to wash them all up on arrival was a bit off putting.
6. Soap in the bathroom would be a basic requirement anywhere so this would also be a must ... plus it's just good customer service.
7. My wife had a bath on the first day and we ran out of hot water when it was less than a third full so she had to fill the rest from the power shower that obviously drained the electric credit on the meter ... I tried to find the water heater and some instructions on what to do but nothing ... we were without hot water apart from the power shower until the 2nd day before we left at 10am. This was probably the biggest annoyance I had .... basic facilities in any accommodation is light, power water and heat ... this includes hot water. 
8. I was ok on pretty much all of the above but the one thing I was most disappointed with was how I felt when I handed the key back ... I knocked on the door and gave the key back along with an empty log basket ... there was no smile, no enquiry on how our stay was and no smile or thanks come again etc .. I was told checkout was at 10am not 10.09am and the door was closed in my face midway through me saying thanks and that we enjoyed our stay ... I don't expect to be buddy buddy but this was rude and dismissive in my opinion ... not at all necessary. 

In summary ... did we enjoy our stay? Yes ... would we come again? Yes .... would we recommend it to others? Yes (with advising them of as listed above though) ... was our experience staying here a 10 out of 10? No sadly only about a 6 (But it could easily be 10 out of 10 with a few minor improvements as detailed above)

Great location and beautiful buildings ... BUT it just needs that last attention giving in the detail.
