The Grafton Hotel

Popped in here for a couple of pints after getting off a train before going to a gig in Bedford as it's only a short walk to the town centre.  Proper boozer with sports TV, pool table and juke box.  Good selection of well looked after draft beers served (in their correct glasses) by pleasant and nicely spoken  bar staff.  Not pricey.  Vibrant and interesting mix of clientele enjoying a Saturday night out.  Would have stayed longer, if we hadn't had other plans, so will be back!

Having arrived after 11pm my husband and 2 children were given a very warm welcome. We were made to feel at home from the off. The room was spacious, comfortable and vibrant. The hotel itself is a hubble of activity and the locals were most friendly. At no time did I feel that my family were in the way and I was able to have a sociable drink in a very warm and inviting pub which had a great atmosphere. Overall the Grafton felt like 'home from home'. I would not hesitate to recommend the Grafton as a great place to stay or to even have a nights craic with the merry locals. The owners Tony and Cathy couldn't do enough. Thank you!

Can't wait to get back!

Recently stayed in The Grafton whilst in Bedford on business.  It's basically a community pub with letting rooms above.

On the plus sides the room and bedding were very clean, as were the shared bathrooms (no en-suite available).  Staff were very friendly and the pub downstairs didn't seem rowdy.  It is located well for the train station and only a few minutes walk into Bedford town centre where there are plenty of shops and restaurants.  Free wifi and good selection of TV channels.  Room had a sink and tea and coffee facilities.  The decor is functional as opposed to appealing, but its not my house so I cant say I'm that bothered. 

The downsides mainly relate to the local area.  Where the Grafton is positioned is a dump.   As soon as you leave the hotel you are met by groups of hoodies openly discussing their latest drug deals and quite a few psycotic looking characters wandering around staring wildy at you. I'm not a little bloke, but to be honest I wasn't comfortable walking around.  Being where it is, the Grafton also suffers from quite a lot of noise... sirens, shouting, cars etc and it tends to continue well into the night.  As the hotel seems popular with tradesmen, you can expect to start hearing movement in the other rooms and on the landings from about 5am - certainly I did and it never seemed to cross minds that others perhaps weren't ready to get up just yet.

Of course, noise and the locals aren't the hotels fault, but nor can they do anything about it so they should be aspects to consider.

I paid £40 per night, which to be honest is too much for this one.  Considering there is no ensuite or breakfast, and the overall type of place it is I would say £25 is much more the mark.  That said, Bedford does seem quite expensive for accommodation... don't know why.

Would I recommend it or stay again?  I have to say no to both.  If you could pick it up and move it somewhere else, then maybe but not where it is.

Good and Bad Points

Stayed at the grafton for 2 nights, it is noisy and drab payed  £130 well overpriced for the accommodation you get, outside at night it's like a ghetto, lots of intimidating people roaming around. All in all found the whole stay depressing ,the room was less than basic, the sink tap was broken  ( turning around and around ) hanging off the wall.

Not good

The sink in the room was dirty, and the room itself stank of smoke. I am a non smoker and had no prior warning this was a smoking room (as is law!!). The bathroom was shabby and the pub itself was intimidating. All of these things may have been somewhat excusable if it wasn't for the price we paid for the room, the price no way reflected the hotel as the hotel was extremely basic.
