The Planters Hotel

We stayed for one night in PLanter's Hotel. The staff was lovely, and gave us plenty of advices and recommandations. Rooms are spacious. The hotel is set a little apart from the town, on the hills. It is very quiet, surrounded by the forest. Nice view.

After a disastrous eight high drive through eighteen hair pin bends from mahiyanganaya to Kandy  at 1 am during amongst worst earth slips ,We choose to call this place out of random. The owner himself answered at the dead of the night and took us in and carried our bags to beds were so inviting and comfy. Bathrooms clean we went to bed straight after a hot bath. Specious rooms and cosy rooms even though it is a colonial bungalow. Bathrooms not so big but ok and clean. obviously new additions.
Lobby area tastefully furnished. It has been designed with niche  market tourists who like privacy which is lacking in hotels. Nice small restaurant. Expensive in local standards.
Foreign guests who want personal attention and privacy check this out.recommended



This moderately priced ex-colonial mansion may be a little past its prime but it still has a sense of grandeur & style of a previous generation which permeates the picturesque town of Kandy in the mountains behind Colombo. Situated a little beyond the end of the ancient man-made lake which was built centuries ago to service the palace, the hotel is a pleasant 15 minute walk to the other end - and the centre of the town (if you take the northern route, you go past the Tooth Temple - a must-see as part of your visit). The service is outstanding, breakfast on the upstairs patio/verandah is more than adequate (coffee is a problem - but that's the same at any hotel in India & Sri Lanka - at best distilled - at worst, Nescafe!!) - the rooms are spacious & clean as are the linen & towels.

Nice hotel in a beautiful building, with a very friendly staff.

We didn't choose this hotel but it was recommended by the lady where we stayed for the previous night. I tried to think of good things about it and I do agree that this place, if allowed with some renovation and design or the staff with some training in English, could become an option for your stay in Kandy. 

The room was big but the toilet too small and it always gets wet when you take the shower. The wooden door was almost worn down from the bottom. Actually the whole house gave an old and unmaintained feeling everywhere. Irritating is that they provided a mini fridge but with nothing inside.  It was a totally useless pretence of lux. At least the hotel could provide a bottle of water and cool it down in the firdge. We had great difficulty in communicating with the staff until the manager appeared the second day. 

I think that the staff were trying to help but it was an unachieved intention. There are so many other options in Kandy either with a better location, better food, better service or better room. Serious work needs to be done for the hotel to be acknowledged with such a rate.

An old mansion which can be done better

The Planters Hotel is situated around a five minute walk from the Kandy Lake and around 30-40 minites to walk into the centre of town.  Its location is up a steepish hill and offers little or no view of the lake.

The building has a grand old colonial feel, aided by the slightly shabby decor and (in our room) some damp on the white walls.  While not for some it definately suited the ambiance of the hotel, with its photos of old plantation workers and  bosses lining the walls.

The room was large with two balconies, a fan, smallish shower/toilet room, TV, wardrobe and mosquito net.

The bed was comfy and the sleep good.  As already mentioned the features are a little shabby but non too bad.

Breakfast is one of the best weve had by far, fruit, fresh juice, toast, choice of eggs and tea/coffee.

The staff were good if not a little over attentive, this could have e something to do with us being the only two guests in the hotel.  This in itself felt a little odd, as we had the whole place to ourselves.

On the whole a pleasant stay, the build and interior could do with a touch up here or there but i would recommend to others.
