There do not seem to be many restaurant choices near the Barajas airport, but this rather plain one on a little plaza was good with pleasant service.  The gazpacho was very good, the simply grilled hake was better than in several high-end restaurants.  An entire meal for two including wine came to less than 50 Euros.
Definitely recommend it.

A Surprisingly Good Restaurant

Since I always avoid taking a connection the same day whenever I can avoid it, I reserved this hotel three weeks before my connection of June 26 June 27 between Paris and Vienna.

So I spent the night in this little town a few minutes from the airport.  As a matter of fact, the subway station "Barajas" is between terminals 1, 2, 3 and terminal 4, which is far away from the other three and which is also gigantic!

I had room number 11, a rather small twin with a nice small balcony over the main square. It has a full bath of a reasonable size and also an individual AC unit with a remote control (same system as in Montevideo) for only 35 € including breakfast.  Unfortunately, I couldn't take it because it started at 7 am and my plane left at 8:45, so I had to be at the airport before 7 am in order to play it safe.

The only PROBLEM with this room is that it is NOISY.  Since it does NOT have double glass windows (the bathroom has a second window), you will hear the noise from the restaurant terrace, which closes at 11 pm.  But you will also hear the noise from neighboring restaurants and some Troglodytes screaming at 1 a.m. like Tarzan calling Cheeta in the middle of the jungle...

You will also hear noise from people going up and down the stairs (NO elevator), and my Sharper Image transistor radio with 20 soothing sounds didn't help at all that night.  Fortunately, everything calmed down by 2 a.m. and I could sleep a couple of hours before getting ready at 5 a.m. to go to the airport.

It's really a pity because this place is VERY WELL LOCATED, just a few minutes from the airport, with bus 101 half a block from it.

When I left for Vienna the next day, I checked out at 6:15, walked half a block and took bus 101 at  6:25 for 1.50 €, which dropped me in terminal 2 a few minutes later.  The time to take the free shuttle to terminal 4, the only one where this bus 101 does not go, I was having a free breakfast at 7 am at the Iberia VIP lounge after passing security.  And whatever is free, I buy...

IN SHORT, if you are a heavy sleeper, you should try this cheap hotel just a few minutes from the airport.  But if you wake up easily, you might want to go to the Ibis on Avenida General, a few blocks from this main square.

The problem is that the Ibis will cost you twice as much without breakfast!

35 € with AC and breakfast near Madrid Barajas airport

We ordered three simple dishes - mixed salad, garlic prawns and papas bravas. The salad was tinned apart from the lettuce and the garlic prawns (12€) were tasteless, frozen shrimps. When we queried the prawns and especially the price, the waiter spoke to the owner who simply shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything and was completely unhelpful. The food was all in all pretty appalling. Do not eat here.
