Camping Derby Loredo

Had an unplanned two night stay on Camping Derby Loredo at the end of our family holiday in August 2018. The intention had been to spend the two nights in Bilbao en route to Santander. However when we arrived at our Bilbao accommodation our plans unexpectedly changed as It was located in an extremely seedy and unsafe area and was certainly not suited for a family. So on a Tuesday evening at 6pm we found ourselves frantically searching the Internet for alternative accommodation in Bilbao or the surrounding area. The only accommodation that showed availability was a mobile at Camping Derby Loredo. We have holidayed in mobiles on 4 star and 5 star campsites in France for many years with the sites always well researched beforehand. But this time we found ourselves arriving at a campsite we knew nothing about so we were a little nervous. Camping Derby turned out to be an unexpectedly pleasant find. The campsite has direct access to a stunning stretch of sandy beach and consists mainly of tents and campers, with just a small amount of mobiles. There is a bar/cafe onsite which has a great outside terrace overlooking the beach and is busiest during the day from beach goers. The site is also on the edge of s town so there are a few bars and restaurants within walking distance. When we were shown to our mobile it was disappointing as it was extremely dated with very basic facilities. However at that stage it was almost 9pm so we had no choice but to stay. Though the campsite facilities were much more basic than we are used to, we were very impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the campsite staff who were doing everything they could to make us feel welcome. The site had a real family atmosphere, other campers were very friendly and we were able to relax and enjoy our stay there. Having spent the day at the fabulous beach, my family have very fond memories of this campsite. So though we thought it would be a memorable experience for all the wrong reasons, it ended up being a memorable experience for all the right ones. Our family would certainly go back.
