Casa Grande Do Bachao

We spent two nights In Santiago de Compostela during our mini road trip across Spain with our little dog and chose the Casa Grande do Bachao, located about 20 - 25 minutes’ drive from the centre of the old city. It sounded like a great alternative to the usual hustle and bustle of a city centre hotel and our choice could not have been better as this place is a haven of tranquillity and relaxation, especially after a long hot day of driving. Casa Grande do Bachao is a cluster of old monastery buildings which have been beautifully modernised to provide a most charming and relaxing retreat with many original features tastefully incorporated. It is set in rolling countryside, surrounded by dense woodland and the Tambre river which can be reached easily for a leisurely stroll. The atmosphere throughout the property is calm and welcoming with a handful of individual rooms and common areas to relax in. Our dog-friendly room was beautifully appointed and very comfortable although lacked air conditioning, whereas some other rooms appeared to have it. A delicious Spanish style buffet breakfast is provided and we also took up the option of the evening meal which is a fixed menu with meat and fish being served at 9.30pm on alternate nights. There is also a choice of reasonably priced wines available. The property owner, Javier who is an excellent chef, prepares the dinner and afterwards, makes a point of chatting to each guest in the dining room. There is a lovely sitting area with tranquil views, an ideal setting for a pre-dinner drink from the self-service honesty bar. This property is a hidden jewel and we have no hesitation in recommending it. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return.
