Forty8 Backpackers - Hostel

First time in a back pack, was very surprised. This real value for money. The sheets wee so clean, the common arrears super clean. Your clientele needs a bit of improvement, but I would definitely stay there again.

This review is for the Cafe 48 next to the backpackers of the same name. It is a pity this quiet little gem does not have its own TripAdvisor listing as it really deserves more exposure. The food is tasty and well-presented, and if you like spicy food be daring and try the Skakshuka style poached eggs. Great coffees as well. 

Had a wonderful one night stay at Backpacker Forty8. Location is perfect with all the major sites within walking distance. Theres a Bar that's a part of the hostel which I absolutely loved. It's got a very chic atmosphere with the best food and beverages served. The Chef, Jimmy, is the BEST. John behind the bar was sweet and everyone was very accommodating in order to make it comfortable. The dorms are nice with balcony access and the bathrooms were clean.

We only visited the restaurant, the Cafe Forty8, and was pleasantly surprised by what a very nice place it is. A friendly welcome, good food from an especially imaginative menu, and prices good as well. We will definitely be back.

Hotel personnel were very friendly and helpful. Walking distance to V&A Waterfront and Cape Town International Convention Centre. Really value for money backpackers hotel in the City Centre that is safe and clean. Secure and easily accessible.

Great central location. What stood out to me about forty8 Backpackers was the staff. they were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The room was nice, comfy bed, but wooden floors quite squeaky on the floor I was on which disrupted my sleep a bit. the manager did ensure me that they were working on having the floors fixed, otherwise it was a quiet location. My only disappointment was that there was not a full kitchen (only kettle & microwave) and not sufficient crockery & cutlery as advertised so I was not able to self cater which was the reason I initially chose this place as I prefer my own food to eating out. 

I Really had a good stay, staff were very helpful and friendly.
I really enjoyed my stay at Forty 8 Backpackers Hotel.
My room was clean every day, including bedding.
Showers were spotless, and bathrooms were on point
I WONT MIND FOR A NEXT VISIT WITH FRIENDS THIS TIME ARROUND.

Hidden gem in inner city

RECEPTION

Kitchen, bathrooms, and room were all comfortable and clean. I felt safe inside the building. The surrounding area might be ok if you're with other people, but I was traveling alone and was harassed by people while walking around a couple times. It was still overall ok to walk around, and probably not a huge deal, but if I could do it over again I'd probably stay in a different area.

Accommodations were fine, but location isn't great if you're alone

 My room was nice and cosy but quite small for a double. Perhaps through error of my own, I didn't realise that the room didn't come with it's own bathroom. If I had known this I would have just booked a cheaper shared dorm room - I paid for the more expensive option to have my own space and was disappointed but this is probably my own fault.

The room initially looked clean and was tidy - no dust anywhere, however the bedsheets and trunk/seat whatever it was, at the end of the bed had several stains on it, some of which looked like blood.

The drawer next to my bed also had some dirt in it. There was no security safe in the room and one of the lights didn't work. 

Otherwise I slept okay - The bed was very comfortable and there wasn't too much noise from the street. 

The rest of the hostel seemed to have been recently repainted and is nicely decorated. However it has a funny feel to it - I was placed on the 'mens' floor, at the very end of the corridor so to use the toilets and showers I had to go all the way back down the corridor and then down a flight of stairs to the women's. The floors are very slippery (highly polished wooden boards) and extremely loud and creaky! I was scared I'd be waking up other guests when walking to use the toilet in the night. 

Overall, I'm not sure how I feel about this property, the staff were friendly and welcoming but I just wasn't sure about the rest of the property.  Maybe it would feel different in the summer when it's busy and full of other people. I feel I could have just slept in a female dorm room and probably had it to myself as the property seemed completely empty, other than for a few older men. 

Comfy bed 

Disgusting! The room I booked and paid for was NOTHING like the ones they advertised on their website which I accessed through AGODA bookings, who are so hard to reach and also offer questionable service.  In the tiny PRIVATE room Forty8 tried to give me - smashed window blinds, stains and cigarette burns on bed linen, communal shower dirty, dirty scraping on wooden floor. I was so shocked I refused to stay there even one hour. Complained to reception who said I had to contact AGODA, which is very hard to do.  This hotel was a total scammer as their rooms are NOTHING like their advertisements.  I walked out and found alternative accommodation ten times better and at half the price!  What a terrible experience and start to a holiday in Cape Town.
