My wife and I have just returned from Santa Teresa di Gallura, Sardinia, and though it was “early” in the season and coincided with the worst spring weather in Sardinia for many years we had a wonderful holiday. Our hosts, Pasqualina and Michael Crobu, were very friendly and welcoming, providing excellent directions and meeting us on our arrival with the offer of a tour of the town when we had been shown the apartment. After a day of travelling we were too tired to take up this offer and they invited us to call them if we needed anything during the week, they then surprised us one evening by visiting to enquire if everything was OK and brought a gift of a very nice red wine! As it was early in the season the apartment complex was almost deserted and as the neighbouring property was an infant’s school it was very all of which may have contributed to us sleeping very soundly each night on the comfortable bed. The location of the apartment could not have been better, for us, as it was situated on the outskirts of town making our journeys around the area very easy. There were two supermarkets within 200M and these supplied all that we needed and simplified self-catering by allowing us to call each day for what we needed. The apartment had a full size electric oven, a priority for us, and gas hob in addition to the fridge/freezer though the limited number of electric sockets made using the kettle and toaster a challenge (made tea before toast). The bedroom is large with ample space around the large double bed and easy access to the wardrobe with a shower room off the entrance corridor which is compact but adequate for a couple. The kitchen/dinner/lounge again is reasonable size for two and has access onto a balcony but due to the weather we only had lunch outside on the couple of days we were local but the view over the pool and a glimpse of the countryside to the rear of the complex is pleasant. As I mentioned the location was ideal as we wanted to explore the area and our timing was to enable us to see the wildflowers of spring/early summer, having visited Sardinia previously in June and seen the swathes of dried grass etc. We were not disappointed the countryside, roadside verges and gardens were a blaze of colour and one of our favourite, and frequently visited, areas was Capo Testa just a 5 minute drive from the apartment. Having previously explored the North of Sardinia from Bosa to Castelsardo, when based in Alghero, this time we ranged from Vignola Mare to Porto Rotondo including the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera via the ferry from Palau. We loved the rugged coastline, for those who know Brimham Rocks imagine those standing on the shore of a turquoise sea, and authentic Sardinian towns and villages but did not take to the purpose built “villages” of the Costa Smerelda. However we will certainly return as we would like to explore Olbia, re-visit Capo Testa and walk some sections of the coastal walk having seen how well marked these are.
