La Portella in Gardola

Had a wonderful stay at La Portella. Location in relation to village of Tignale is superb - within walking distance of supermarkets, bars, restaurants meaning that needs for a car in minimal. We even found that this encouraged us to walk to adjoining villages and beauty spots rather than bother with car - which was great. Accommodation was good - view and balcony area were the 2 downside to our particular apartment but it's clear that there are many apartments with fantastic view and lots of balcony space ( so I guess it's about getting the reservation in early and with specific requests ). We certainly noticed that many families were on the 4th, 5th and even 6th visits here. Pool and other amenities ( tennis, football, fussball, ping-pong tables ) were all great. Staff were really pleasant and friendly - as were all the local people whom we encountered in shops and restaurants - really great feel to this community. Eating out was much cheaper in Tignale than we had experienced in other towns around Lake Garda and further afield. Tignale is quite high up on the mountainside above Lake Garda - but the views and scenery are breathtaking. There are walking/running/biking trails all across the area with several levels of difficulty and some of these are just stunning. However some can be very steep and daunting - so be prepared to be challenged if, like me, you are not fit and fleet of foot. We found very few English speaking tourists around Tignale and surrounding area's - but we met many fabulous people and families who were so friendly and open. La Portella is frequented mainly by families with teenager and older children. That's not to say it wouldn't be great for younger families - I think it would - there just weren't that many there when we were there. Great location, good facilities, friendly helpful staff - really enjoyable.
