An absolute gem of a pub. Fabulous location, warm welcome, great atmosphere. Recently changed hands but still very good, home-cooked food and continuity at the front of house from the wonderful Tom, who cannot do enough for you. As I said to him, I don’t run a pub but I would poach him if I did! Charming.

Popped in for a drink as the pub is conveniently located just over the road from the campsite we are staying at. Friendly bar staff, nice beers brewed onsite. We didn’t eat, but food smelled amazing.

We came up north specifically to climb Scafell Pike. Strands Hotel / Screes Inn and Micro Brewery is an absolutely ideal base in a beautiful area (just a couple of miles up the road) from Wasdale Head - one of Scafell’s base camps) and snuggling up to Wastwater lake for amazing walks. Our accommodation included en-suite and was clean and fresh with tea / coffee facility and incredible value for money (they could double their fee and we would have happily paid). Excellent breakfast, lovely people and we dined in the evening in the pub which was home cooked and great food. Great ales and very busy pub - our accommodation was above the pub but we didn’t hear a thing (slept like babies).

What a great pub, amazing food, wonderful staff and a comfortable atmosphere.  So many walks on the doorstep.  What more could you ask for.  My partner sampled many of the ales brewed in their own micro brewery 👍

Third time we've been here over the years after doing the 5 mile Nether Wasdale walk whilst on holiday. Always a warm welcome, a lovely traditional inn. Very dog friendly, always buy ours their own goody bag at the bar. 
Cant believe how many vegan options are on the menu now - so great to have so much choice! I had the banana blossom fish'n' chips and oh my gosh! they were bloomin great. All the food is hot, tasty and plentiful. 
Love the new t-shirts too....couldnt resist buying one :) 
Looking forward to our next visit, hopefully soon. 

I came here after a lovely walk over Illgill Head & Whin Rigg.  I stopped for a few hours as I wanted to have a bite to eat when their kitchen opened again for the evening.  Great beer and the beer cheese with bread and salad was fantastic and reasonably priced. 
I would especially like to say thanks to the lady behind the bar (who’s name I didn’t catch but she had an issue with her foot, I remember) and the slightly older man who may have been manager/owner - they lent me some tape to try and sort my boots out - the sole of my boot had completely collapsed coming off the mountain and I had another 5 miles to go after the pub.  The lady was also really friendly and gave fantastic service behind the bar!
Thanks also to the customers Sharon and Matt who did the taping for me, and put some extra ties on and who were excellent company for the afternoon/evening!
And thanks to pub regulars James and Andy who were also lovely to chat to and gave me a cigarette or two when I was knackered and didn’t have many with me!

Very kind and accommodating owners. Due to icy wintey conditions the hotel had to close. We turned up to find the staff couldn't make it to work and the hotel was closed; the owners had emailed and rung to explain but we had no signal. 
Regardless, they allowed us to stay for reduced rate and gave us wine and plates and breakfast. 
The place is wonderful and full on Christmas atmosphere, and the food was excellent. 
Will return in summer!

We Stopped at The Strands for a meal on a Friday night, without a  booking, only to find  they were fully booked. Amazingly, a lovely member of staff, a lady named Katie, pulled out all the stops to squeeze us in!
Having had a long day travelling, we were tired and hungry and were  so grateful to Katie for going out of her way to be so friendly and welcoming.
Food was great too!

This pretty village location is the perfect place to stay if you want a total breakaway. The views are stunning and the Strands is a cosy walkers pub that looks after guests extremely well. 
Great food each eve but booking is essential as they do get lots of walk-ins most eves. Friday night is extremely busy and was very lively with the locals all gathered round the bar area which was lovely to be part of. 
We actually stayed across the road in the Screes and the room was very clean, shower was modern and nice and hot which was a comfort after long walks. Tea and coffee tray and kettle, tv and a very comfy mattress on the bed. Practical bright room that became our base for a few days. Good hanging space for walking gear to dry and stay aired, the heating was on low which was welcoming on these slightly chilled mornings.
The staff were very welcoming and so helpful which really made our stay a great experience as we felt well looked after. 
Fab breakfast to set you up before a day on the fells  or your preferred outing of the day. 

We loved it here and will stay again next year. If you want peace in an idyllic location we really recommend this gem of a place :)

Definitely worth 5 star review, the food was amazing, great portion sizes and staff go above and beyond making sure your every need is met, thank you for making us feel so welcome. Will definitely visit again.

Great Pub, great staff, delicious food and friendly regulars!

Although I didn’t stay at the strands, I can only heap so much praise and gratitude on the owner and staff who took me in and helped me so much when I’d broken down on the shores of wastwater. As there was no phone signal in the valley, they let me use their Wi-Fi to contact RAC and stay until they arrived
When I went in and explained my situation to the staff they seemed only too happy to help. After finding out how long RAC would be (approx 5 hours) the staff and owners got me together a pot of tea and sat me in a corner inside so I could wait.
When RAC decided it would be another 2 hours. The staff waited as long as they could before they had to close, with cups of tea and concern. They also lent me a jumper and a some lights so I’d be ok until RAC finally arrived (they never did!!)
We even joked about cooking my breakfast in the morning!!
When a taxi was arranged by RAC that took 4 hours, the owner was opening up again for guests breakfasts and was horrified I was still there. She hastily tried to arrange a bed for me so I could maybe get a couple of hours sleep. Then the taxi to take me back to my hotel turned up!!
My heartfelt gratitude to both owner and staff for all their help and concern. I would recommend anyone to either stay or pop in for their hospitality at the strands as if they can show this much helpfulness to a non resident then you’ll get a wholehearted welcome if you’re paying…thanks again guys

Perfect place to stay….

4/5 as card only option ? And the booking system seems to be a bit hit and miss, although when we got food it was amazing and so was portion, average plate price of a main around £16, good selection of beers and San Miguel is really good, staff are brilliant, place is rammed, well done 👏 keep up the good work, no sky sports but decent WiFi

Excellent traditional pub

What an amazing place.  A fantastic hotel with its own micro brewery.  The rooms aren't overly big but they are perfect for what you need.  Well appointed, airy and very, very comfortable beds.  The staff are great, nothing is too much trouble.  Food is proper home cooking and served very quickly, also a decent breakfast is a must before a days walking.  Well placed for some great low level and higher walks before returning for a well earned pint.  The hotel provides a drying room, a great packed lunch and is dog friendly all in all a perfect Lakes Hotel
