This is a nice bunkhouse, but there were issues with the kitchen and the room.  Kitchen wasn't clean and flies hanging around.  Our room had water issues, mold was growing on the ceiling and there was an attempt to wipe the mold away, but it was still visible.  This room should have been put out of order or we should have been advised. The room was damp from the first day and it felt humid from the moment we entered it.  There is a few lovely walks you can take from there, one in particular from the  bunkhouse to Sizergh Estate.  Well worth the short trek through farmers fields.

location was great,  but room disappointing.

We stayed here for just one night as we travelled down to Wales from Scotland. We chose it initially for its handiness as a stopping-off point and for its very competitive price. We were a family of four and had The Gable room which has a double bed and two singles up in the attic.  The room was beautiful, as was the whole building. It was very chapel-like and was right next to an old church and grave yard. The room had lovely windows and views over the surrounding countryside.

The bathroom was spacious with a lovely big bath and there was an armchair and window seat to sit at with tea and coffee making stuff. You need to bring a bit of milk along with you though as this isn't provided. You do kind of forget that you are in a 'bunkhouse' hostel-type situation as it's so lovely.  Many of the other guests obviously bring their own food and cook it up in the communal kitchen downstairs.

We had phoned in advance and booked ourselves an evening meal at The Wheatsheaf pub a minute's drive down the road. This is where you also pick up your key to the Bunkhouse. We had a lovely meal here and also booked ourselves in for breakfast the next day. Definitely recommend you do this as the food is great and it's a lovely friendly pub.

The only very slight drawback that we discovered when we went exploring the whole bunkhouse, is that there is no soundproofing at all between the floor of the Gable room and the ceiling of the communal living room downstairs. The living room is a gorgeous, slightly gothicky room that would be brilliant to hang out in if there was a crowd of you. You can literally hold a conversation from this room to the room upstairs and you don't need to shout. Something to bear in mind. There weren't many other guests in the bunkhouse the night we stayed so we weren't bothered by any noise at all (apart from a hooting owl!)

We definitely want to come back here for both the accommodation and its gorgeous location.

Wonderful, quirky accommodation in a beautiful location

Short break with my wife and 2 sons at the end of a summer tour. This was one of the highlights. Stayed in a bunk room for 4 which was fun, fresh and offered a different experience which felt closer to the countryside around. Beautiful view of the valley and lovely lazy walks from the doorstep. Only quibble was the road down to the local pub is without any path and we didn't feel it was safe to walk on.

Quirky fun accomodation in beautiful lake district surrounds

We stayed for one night in Birkfell on our way to Windermere. The location is stunning, set in a remote spot with views of the fells in one direction and the sea in the other. Room was clean and beds comfy, with a full bathroom, towels and kettle. We all loved the big lounge with its quirky decor, comfy chairs and fire. There was a small kitchen with toaster, kettle, fridge, oven, washing up stuff and named storage areas. We had a really brilliant evening meal at the connected pub The Wheatsheaf, 5 mins drive down the hill. This was a novelty stay for us that was great fun in a little known area, with a warm welcome.

Stunning location and welcoming, cosy stay

We stayed over bank holiday weekend as two families in 2 rooms. Check in was good. We had room number four. It was just myself two children and a dog. It was quite cosy but more than adequate for the weekend. Beds and linen were nice and the tea tray was nice to have for an early cuppa.

Location was good. The view outside was wonderful and easy for walking the dog. There are some lovely walks if you turn left along the lane and keep walking. Short drive to Brigsteer for the Wheatsheaf pub. An easy drive to Kendal for supplies.

I have knocked off half a star for the following reasons: The Wi-Fi was not great and did not reach our room. Clearly not essential but would have made our teens happy on a rainy afternoon. Also a small shelf would be very welcome above the bunkbed to save keep climbing down to put books and iPads back.

All in all I would thoroughly recommend the bunkhouse. We enjoyed the shared lounge and had no problems accessing the kitchen. It was nice that the dog was welcome in all areas as she is just as much a part of our family. Hopefully we can visit again and do more of the walks nearby.

So nice to find such a lovely dog friendly accommodation for the family. Stayed 2 nights in smaller room and last 2 in the larger room upstairs. Both lovely but the larger room was better for keeping all our gear and bikes in the room. Kitchen was ideal and we cooked most nights.  Great views and lots of cows and sheep around. Will recommend to anyone and hope to visit again sometime soon. 

Great place in beautiful location 

The rooms were clean, great for a family of 4 to share.  The main living area spacious enough for families to get together, to play games, listen to music or just chill.  The kitchen was well equipped with everything you need.  Pub down the road if you fancied a walk and a bite to eat.

Peaceful location with scienic views, great for larger groups

Newly re-furbished and absolutely perfect for a group getaway. We had kids from 1 years old to 6 years and they had a great time - booked the whole place out. The rooms are mostly bunk beds and very comfy each with their own bathroom. Kitchen well equipped. I can imagine in the winter the roaring fire would be spectacular. The view is stunning from the Bunkhouse. Amazing place to wake up in the morning. Would highly recommend.
