The rooms all all well appointed and a decent size. The bed was SO comfortable. This was greatly appreciated as we had spent the previous night on the most unforgiving mattress on a Brittany Ferry. 
Excellent and charming welcome. A really good night’s sleep.
The breakfast was substantial but let down by very poor quality bread. Nice fresh bread would have raised the score to 5 star.


You may not have long to sample this as this 200 yr old building maybe changing use.. great hospitality, wonderful room, balcony over garden a delight on an early Monday morning. Breakfast brilliant and the views down the old toad to Portsmouth are magnificent!

Stayed for 2 nights with my mum in the twin room at top of the building. As the room was on its own we had our own small mezzanine with chairs and extra TV. This led onto a huge roof top terrace with superb views. The room itself was comfortable and very clean but quite old fashioned. A better choice of teas/coffee etc would have been nice. Overall though there was everything we needed to make a comfortable stay. The rest of the property was equally old fashioned but has a lovely feel and charm to it and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again. All the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and more than happy to have a chat which certainly enhances your overall experience.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Ellerslie House Hotel.  The bed was very comfortable, we had the room with the terrace which overlooks the garden.  The control for the shower in the bathroom  was loose and it was quite a small bathroom but clean.  The breakfast was very good and plenty of it, there was a good choice of cereals and the breakfast was cooked to order.  We would like to stay here again.

Charming Hotel

What a gem 

This hotel is in a lovely setting and has beautiful gardens. We were also greeted warmly when we arrived so we had high hopes. The decor of the rooms is very dated, however I wouldn't have minded that if it was comfortable. Sadly, the bed was absolutely hideous to sleep on. The springs squeaked loudly every time we moved a muscle and we both kept rolling into the middle of the bed as the mattress springs were so knackered. The mattress in room 3 desperately needs replacing. 
Breakfast was equally disappointing. There was no menu to choose from, we were just asked if we wanted a full English. I'm vegetarian so this was not what I wanted, however when i said this, it was as though I was an alien. The response I got was "oh yes we had a vegetarian here recently so we might still have some hash browns". Are vegetarians really such a rarity in this day and age? I asked if I could have some eggs on toast instead, with some mushrooms and tomatoes, and my partner decided to have the same (he doesn't eat much meat either) and this was accommodated. The portions we received were laughable. A tiny portion of scrambled eggs with 2 small mushrooms, 2 halves of tomato and one slice of toast, for the same price as the full English (£8!). I really don't understand why the portion was so meager and why they couldn't have doubled it all to make up for the items we weren't having. We both could have eaten much more. 
For the same price as this hotel, we have stayed in significantly better places with delicious breakfasts. We felt quite ripped off.
