Fingals Luxury Country House BB

Wonderful stay, grounds were beautiful and hosts were lovely. Couldn't have asked for more for a week away with my family and dog. The pool was perfect for all of us to jump in and out off all day and the tennis court was ideal for the kids to run around.

Location is perfect, minutes away from the River Dart, a short hop to the beautiful beaches.

Our accommodation was beautifully clean and tidy with soft fluffy towels and crisp bedsheets.

Fingals is such a relaxing, calm and restful place to stay, wind down and chill out. The gardens are fabulous , and it’s  a real treat to play on a beautifully cared for grass tennis court. If you’re looking for an antiseptic, soulless holiday home then Fingals is not for you. But if you like quirky, original and artistic you will love it.

We celebrated our Wedding Anniversary at Fingals.

As you walk into Barberry Brook, your shoulders go down and RELAX! What a special place it is. Richard and Sheila have put so much thought into it's design we LOVE it!!

Richard and Sheila are very attentive hosts nothing is too much trouble, they go the extra mile.

One of the most welcoming and comfortable holidays, a gem of a place in every way, with lots of things to see and do. Richard and Sheila are very hospitable, and have made a small  valley into a beautiful haven of peace and tranquility, the accommodation is luxurious, but at the same time, one is left alone to wander the establishment, unhindered, and enjoy the facilities, highly recommend in every way, and would return over and over again.

What a fabulous stay!  

If you want to escape the hurry and worry of the city, Fingals is a wonderful oasis of calm in deepest Devon, right next to the stunning River Dart estuary, where you will be looked after by attentive hosts Richard and Sheila.    

We booked Barberry Brook (one bedroom) but when we arrived we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Barn which is a beautiful, oak beamed building with 3 bedrooms, a spacious open plan living space, and views across the Fingals' garden.

The sleeping accommodation was immaculate - luxurious mattresses to sink into, wonderful pillows and bed linen.  Our room had a beautifully appointed en-suite bathroom topped off with Fingals own brand soaps and shampoos (which are designed by Sheila).   

You don't need a car.  We decided to avoid the drive taking the train to Totnes, and catching a taxi to the hotel (c£30).  

If you want a decent walk (c2.5 hours) you can walk to Dartmouth and catch the ferry back to Dittisham.  Or you can stay local.  Dittisham, and the Anchorstone Cafe (excellent) and Ferry Boat Inn (a great local pub), are a 25 minute walk from the hotel. 

Definitely going again.

I have just returned from a stay at Fingals run by Richard and Sheila Johnston. I stayed in a delightful and characterful Folly set in grounds adjacent to the main building. Very spacious lounge and kitchen with balconies overlooking a stream and the very well maintained grounds. Downstairs, equally spacious shower , bathroom and bedroom.
I have to say I loved it so much it became a wrench to leave even for a quick shopping trip. There is something calming, charming and totally relaxing that left me with a genuine sense of really being on holiday. This ambiance is down to the imaginative and hard work your hosts invest in making the break special and unique. They are always available to help but never intrusive.
I heartily recommend Fingals and the Folly and know you will enjoy as much as I did. I will return next year!

Just returned home from the most magical stay at Fingals. We came as a group of 10 girl friends wanting to have a 'little women' style get away. We stayed in the Manor Farmhouse, each room was uniquely beautiful, I got to stay in the 4 poster princess bed! The house and whole property was decorated in beautiful art work, for a big property it had a lovely bohemian flair. We all felt so relaxed there, with wood to burn by the fire, slow cooking dinner in the range, en suites in all the rooms, a piano to play, flowers blooming in the garden and not to forget the pool... we spent almost all of our time swimming under the shade of luscious plants, popping into the sauna, then looking over the river from the balcony. A weekend we will never forget, thank you x 

Invited to a big birthday party at a nearby house,  I booked into the delightful Folly at Fingals.   Sheila could not have been nicer and suggested walks and things to do before the party.  She was also lovely to my dog.   I’ll certainly come back.



Very quiet, clean and comfortable. We took two dogs and the place is very dog friendly. Short drive to beaches for walks and nearby pubs. Can take ferry from Dittisham to Dartmouth. Would definitely come again. 

Ahh Fingals... how do we love thee? Let us count the ways... the friendly & hospitable Sheila & Richard ~ the unique design of each if the properties ~ the ultra comfy beds & quality bedding the artful objects in every nook & cranny, indoor and out ~ the pool, sauna, and pristine grass tennis court ~ the exquisite natural surroundings ~ the flora & fauna ~ the peace & quiet ~ the one-off  'quirkiness' which makes us feel we're somewhere TRULY special ~ the picturesque village of Dittisham, a short walk away ~ seriously, what's not to love?! My husband and I recently enoyed our 16th visit to Fingals, we stayed in the Folly, which is as beautiful & romantic - and even more warm & cosy - as the first time we stayed there, many moons ago. The sound of the babbling brook, watching the wildlife whilst having coffee on our private deck, was so very special. As always... we didn't want to leave. And as always... we will be back! Thank you, Richard & Sheila, for sharing your slice of heaven with us.

A Slice Of Heaven in Devon

Just excellent, home from home and lovely helpful hosts. Comfortable and perfect for self catering. Lovely grounds and tennis court and swimming pool and sauna… the list goes on … snooker, table tennis games galore, we even spotted a lovely little play house fully equipped. You may not want to leave the site to explore the area! It’s fun driving down lanes where the hedges touch both sides of the car! Thanks for the stay and hope to visit again.

My Wife and I have just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at Fingals. We stayed in Barberry Brook which is the most tranquil setting you could wish to have.The only noise you hear is the babbling of the brook and the occasional owl at night. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and extremely well appointed. The whole place is very quirky and may not suit everyone, but we loved it. The owners Sheila and Richard were very friendly and were there if needed, but not in your way at all.
We are looking forward to returning in the not too distant future.
A wonderful place in a beautiful setting.
