Explorer by Eco Team - Kumana National Park

We spent 4 days here as the second camp within the Mahoora tented campsites. Located by a quiet river on the edge of the park allowed us easy access to the wonderful sights and sounds of the park. With the mix of lagoons, woods and open areas the park delivered as a true wildlife experience with elephants and leopard sightings over the time in the park. Given the location we spent most of the day in the park with the evenings spent by the fire eating a wonderful array of sri lankan food. As we had our own guide our party were the only people in the camp increasing the feeling and experience of solitude and a real "wild" experoience.

This was the third and final Mahoora camp of our trip. We certainly kept the best for last. Probably due to a lack of research I had not realised that this camp was only put up for us the day before, and that it would be removed the day we left. There were four of us, so there were two tents for us, a dining tent, a tent for the staff, and a cooking tent. Our tents were well equipped with a shower, which admittedly did not have hot water, and a flushing toilet. The beds were comfortable and there was enough space in the tent for us and our cases.
The four course meal the fist night was first class and the service impeccable. Unfortunately they ran out of tonic after one drink each, but there was cold beer and soft drinks. We had an early start for our safari the next morning and then returned for lunch and a rest. I was aware of the vehicle going away, but did not really think about it. It turned out that they made the three hour round trip to get tonic for us.
Just as they were lighting the fire for our second night the heavens opened, which stopped the usual gin around the campfire. This meant that the meal had to be brought round sheltered by umbrellas, but was still excellent. We did feel sorry for the chef who was cooking the food on the bbq under an umbrella.
We did not see any leopards, but did find two bear cubs which I spotted and were missed by the guide and driver, so a point for me.This camp was without doubt the highlight of our whole trip and I would recommend it to anyone. It was so peaceful in the jungle at night. After the chaos of  Yala the park is so quiet it is a pleasant change. We would certainly do this again.. There were six people to look after the four of us, and they told us that four is the maximum they can cater for. Neil who was front of house was a star, and a credit to the company, but really the whole team were excellent.

Mahoora' tented camp inside Kumana National Park was certainly the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. First of all staying inside the park was so, so special and a real privilege. It is the most amazing place with lots of variety in the landscapes and a myriad of environments to explore. We were lucky enought to be at camp for three nights which meant lots of excursions. Our guide Dumindu was world class and must be congratulated - he led us on safari and we saw and photographed in detail so many birds we lost count. We saw leopards, the sloth bear, elephants, buffalo, wild boar, several species of mongoose, squirrels and monkeys, and also jackals - a first for us in SL. We took our time and sat watching the behavior of the animals on many occasions. Our tent was very comfortable and set up beside a large river with lots of shade from the giant trees along the bank.  Meals served by our wonderful camp "chief" Ranga were all excellent and a credit to the chef in the camp kitchen - lots of variety and all very tasty.  Every evening we had a campfire and one night we even had a barbecue down on the sandy beach by the river. We also took picnic breakfasts and lunches out into the park sometimes. Explorer at Mahoora you have a wonderful set-up here with a fabulous crew who make it all so special - don't change the formula, you are onto a winner! Would just love to come back!

Although Mahoora Tented Safaris are very expensive, we have choosen the Kumana Explorer programme by Mahoora, since we had already a great experience with them in Wilpattu NP two years ago. And I must say, this trip was worth it. 10 people were taking care of us two (a naturalist, a driver, a park ranger, a cook, and many more). The tent was very comfortable, even with flushing toilet and shower, the camp was located at the bank of a river in the midst of the park. we had an evening safari, where we sighted two leopards and one sloth bear, a good number of elephants and plenty of birds, kites and eagles. Also during the morning safari we were lucky to spot another sloth bear, as well as the very rare black necked storch. This was only possible, as the camp was in the park, and if you are starting from the entrance gate, you need 1,5 hours to reach the sites, where you have better chances to spot such animals. Also the food provided was excellent.

I stayed at this camp last month when I visited kumana national park in ampara. Room are just basic tent accomodation but are maintained very well. Location of the camp is just great in front of the waterbody so every moment we get these amazing view of water and birds and sometimes animals.

We had a wonderful 2 days in the camp after a very eventful transfer that didnt go to plan.The team have acknowledged that more than one member of staff should accompany guests on transfers incase of a breakdown which happened  to us.  However once  we finally arrived at the camp we were looked after extremely well.Lovely Sri Lankan food and a beautiful camp setting next to the river.The safaris into the park were  excellent and we saw abundant wildlife including 2 leopard sightings.The tent was reasonably comfortable with our own private bathroom.This was the best experience we had in Sri Lanka and would highly recommend .The barbecue under the stars on our last night was truly special.Thank you to all the team at Mahoora Kumana who worked really hard to make our stay so enjoyable.
