Spring Garden

After a stressful stay in Colombo, I was so relieved to arrive at Spring Garden in Nuwara Eliya. I was greeted by the owner with tea and was invited to have dinner that night. My room was large and clean and had lots of blankets, which was great given the cooler temperatures. The following day,  the owner’s wife made me an amazing takeaway lunch of rice and curry that I brought on the train. The location was great, a short walk from downtown and an 800 rupee tuk tuk ride to the Nanuoya train station. Highly recommended, especially for solo lady travellers. 

We stayed at the Spring Garden for three nights and had a wonderful time.  Wasantha, the host of the hotel, helped us out a lot as far as places to eat, things to do and places to go.  He arranged day trips in their van to the Tea Country and Horton's Plain with their very good driver, Nilanthe.  Usually, his wife cooks, but it was hard for her, since she had just broken her foot.  Nonetheless, we had a great dinner there and breakfast was delicious.  Be aware that it is a bit of a hike into downtown, being up on a hill and you will probably need to take a tuk tuk back, especially at night.

We spent two nights at Spring Garden and Wasantha, the owner, is a fantastic host! He was helpful and so enthusiastic about his country and his property. We had lunch at the Grand Hotel and chatted for quite some time to the bar manager Anthony who had worked there for 32 years! He made us a special Arrack cocktail and even gave us a little tour. It's a beautiful old colonial style hotel with whirring fans, beautifully furnished and in a lovely setting. Definitely worth a visit, as is the Hill Top Club, a similar style hotel where it's members only - but for 100LKR you can become a member for one day. After a good walk around the town (visit the supermarket - amazing wooden floors and it still retains some of it's olde worlde charm with painted boards outside advertising their long-ago wares - gramophones and such like).  We went back to Spring Garden and had dinner that Wasantha's wife had cooked, a lovely rice and chicken curry dish. Wasantha was very kind and lit a beautiful coconut and cinnamon wood fire for us in the evening (we were lucky enough to have a fireplace in our bedroom). The nights can get chilly here! The room was clean and had a very beautiful view over the town. We had a change of plan and decided to head for Adam's Peak after Nuwara Eliya and Wasantha arranged a driver and food for us but he also let us borrow warm clothes and a rucksack for the trip up the mountain. He even rang us the next day to check everything was ok with the driver and to see if we had enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Wasantha for a brilliant stay!

Great Views and a Nice Host

Great time!

The owner of this guest house is very lovely and enthusiastic and super helpful. He even came over to see us off at 5 am. But the house itself, although a cool interior design, is very outdated and just old and would need proper refurbishment. We only stayed for 1 night and only to sleep. It's not a place I would want to spend more time in. The bed was fine and clean and the bathroom was ok too. Although the shower was heated with gas and the gas smell quite strong. 
The paint comes off the wall in places, the kitchen cupboards are very old and I probably wouldn't have used the kitchen even though we could have made coffee in the morning.

Lovely owner but very tired place

Technically the items in the pictures are there...pillows, bed covers, a garden but the pictures are very decieving. The reality is that this is a very tired place, unkempt gardens, dirty carpets, ugly decor and sad bathrooms with poor heat regulation. The place was noisy with  talking and a kid screaming through the night. We bailed before breakfast.
