After a friend raved to us about Il Ghiottone Umbro, it was the first place we booked on our (very first) trip to Italy. The home and the guest cottages behind it—where we stayed—are beautiful. The panoramic landscape, visible from seemingly everywhere on the property, is spectacular. Our rooms were bright and airy, with a lovely canopy bed and a glorious sunken bathtub. The owners, Thomas and Lisbeth, are gracious and solicitous. I made a big mistake not signing up for one of Lisbeth's cooking classes. The breakfast she made us (served in their dwelling-magazine-caliber kitchen) was just incredible: bread, granola, cake, and a zucchini frittata, all prepared from scratch. Their three cats hang around outdoors, which made us feel even more at home. This is a magical place, worth building a visit around.
