It's as good as advertised by other guests. You'll get personal welcome with rakija and wine. They take a time to communicate with you or just leave you alone if you want more privacy. They have done good job with this old house and it gives you great opportunity to take a look for Macedonian family and house life. It's worth to make a detour just for a stay at this house but Kratovo is also worth a visit.
If you have a car then you better leave it at parking places near the bridge. I'm used for narrow and steep old streets but it really takes some effort to reach the house with car. It's just a easy walk away from main parking area.

We had such an amazing time with Stevce and Valentina. They were phenomenal hosts who showed us and taught us about their traditional foods. Stevce took us on a walk around Kratovo. Luckily we had someone with us who could translate but otherwise the pure energy and joy of Stevce would still be enough to get you excited. We had some delicious Manti Kratovian style prepared by Valentina amongst other foods and spices like k'cana sol. Most of the foods are prepared by them so it was a delight to taste true local foods. The house is an old house that has been refurbished to live in but you still feel as if you are living 100 years ago. We would recommend this place 100% and Kratovo is a must visit - such a cool town with loads of history of different groups who have lived there.

Kratovo is pff the beatem tourist macedonian tracks, god knows why. We loved the town and its surroundings. On the steep hills woth deep and narrow riverbeds, the views and small, stone streets are incredible. Great monuments, beautiful landscapes. Etnohouse is the only place like that in the whole country, and we have seen  various options during our 2weeks trip. Furnished with genuine items 300 years old house in the old part of the town. You'll get well fed just after passing the treshold. You 'll be shown a cellar museum of the traditional objects. You can get the slowfood spicy salt and menth and sweets.  Landlord can arrange trips and the price is decent. He can advise where to go and show you spots you cant find in guidebooks. He is genuinly interested in presenting his region, town and history. Don't ask , go there!

We only booked a tour with Stevce which was really worth it. He guided us through all parts of kratovo and let us experience their good food and flours with all our senses. From the traditional blacksmith to the very cosy home of Stevce which we can imagine is also a very good spot to stay overnight), one get moved back in time. We have never seen a more authentic tour before! Stevce is a very enthusiastic story teller who knows everybody of the small pretty city, which is said to be one of the oldest in the Balkan. He can't speak English himself so he had a very cool translator joining the tour. We would definitely recommend everybody to visit this place

Pleasant place. Good fresh and authentic food and good quality and quantity. Very nice service and a real sense of hospitality, the desire to provide the best effort; which becomes rare in western European countries.

Staying here is a great experience. Incredibly warm greeting from the hosts, home-prepared food, raki, wine offered continually throughout your stay like you are a member of the family returning after a long absence, rather than a paying guest. Very little English is spoken so you need to be prepared to cope with gestures and smiles, but all worked out very well for us. We were taken on a walk round the town (which is interesting in itself) with some other guests (from Romania) who fancied it too, and had the local speciality pizza in restaurant Aleksandrija. Spent the evening after dinner chatting with new Polish guests, drinking the host's raki and chilled water.  The house is interesting and comfortable, but this is not a luxury stay by any means. Kratovo gets very hot in summer and no air conditioning anywhere in such places can make sleeping less than pleasant. The rooms are clean, private, and beds are comfortable; linen and towels all provided. The bathroom is shared with all other guests. This can entail a long wait if there are several people waiting ahead of you, moreover hot water is not available to allow every guest staying to shower in succession. (Mine was cold!). This is a place for a real experience. Yes, we were incredibly hot and slept less than brilliantly, my shower was cold and I had to wait a long time for the bathroom, but I'm still really glad I stayed here. (Most times it won't be as hot as we had it, people won't all be showering at the same time, and the place won't be totally full with other guests).  The hosts are incredibly friendly, the food lovely, and the kindness they show is wonderful. We had a breakfast picnic made for us and put in the fridge the night before as we had to leave at 6am. Perfect for us, but the situation wasn't ideal, as I would have loved to sit and enjoy the chatter with the other guests over the breakfast table. This sort of communal experience is one of the lovely unique qualities about staying here - the interaction with other guests. Kratovo is interesting and attractive as is Ethno House Shanchaeva. For a quirky, comfortable, good value, and uniquely Macedonian place to stay, this is a good option. You will leave with memories!
