Hostal Casa Aguacanela

The 'Casa Aguacanela' is a little sweet hostel. We stood there for nearly 3 weeks in july 2013. It is a good place to discover Cali and its surrounding area. We enjoyed it very much! Many thanks for the wonderful hopitality and many greetings from Germany !!! Ulla y Andreas

I had a great time in Casa Aguacanela, nice view, spacious rooms, well decorated quiet and safe. The breakfast was delicious and the owner pretty friendly and helpful. The neighborhood Miraflores is close to the center and the old town. I highly recommend this B&B if you are looking for a place to feel at home. The kitchen and the shared areas are comfortable and charming.

Loved my time at Casa Aguacanela.  I've stayed at Hostels all over the world and few have been this relaxing and comfortable.  Big rooms, spacious kitchen, and great view of the city of Cali.  Esperanza is a gracious host and is happy to help the guests.  Highly recommended.

Casa Aguacanela is a lovely place run by a super lovely lady called Esperanza. It was always a delight chatting with her - especially how encouraging she was when I was struggeling with my limited knowledge of Spanish.
The balcony room was very pleasant with lots of nice and colourful objects reflecting Esperanzas dedication to create not just a place to sleep but a place you can really feel at home. A home with a soul as it appeared to me. Very seldom you come across a place like this. Nice view from my room and from the balcony of the common kitchen. Her cute cat, Pancha, was another bonus. 
The only two things I would suggest are: breakfast should be included and the tiny windows without panes should get screens to keep mosquitos at bay - though, I would return anyway.

Una estadia muy buena!

As Good as it Gets

I stayed in Casa Aguacanela for nearly 3 months. The neighborhood is very central and safe. The property itself is nice but unfortunately the management is not. The home is now owned by an older lady but her son speaks English so he advertises for it. My initial impression was good but soon after staying I noticed some problems. 

The home is mostly opened so you hear a lot of outside noise. There are 2 schools nearby and a major street in front. The noise at times can be overbearing if you are trying to work or study. If you need reliable WiFi that can be an issue since the upload and downloads speeds can be a bit slow at times or not work at all. Same with other services like the washer, toilet, roof, etc...If things didn’t work properly we were supposed to contact the owner. Some of the problems were fixed but I feel like others were repaired by the tenants collectively working together. If the people you live with are proactive and Spanish speakers things are a lot easier; but that can also work the other way as well. I felt at times the rules of the home were not clearly enforced. Initially, when I came the environment was very quiet and friendly because the tenants that were there were older and also working. It was pretty much understood that we were to have respect for each other and the common spaces. Unfortunately, with different people coming in and out it didn’t stay that way for long. The last difficulty I had was in the pricing. When I initially started renting I had negotiated a price with her son which was reasonable. When I asked if I could extend my stay that’s when things got a little confusing. I think there were some cultural differences there or maybe some miscommunication but I don’t feel the price she charged me was unfair. 

Overall, I would stay my stay was okay there were a lot of issues but only because the lady is older and she is not very proactive when it comes to solving them. I’m grateful for some of my housemates because together we were able to work together to get things to work. Even though, the owner wasn’t very good at managing the property she was very kind and thoughtful especially at the beginning. It’s unfortunate that things ended the way they did.
