Super helpful and kind.  Both David and Rosie were available for questions and information about the Day of the Dead celebrations in town. The free parking was very much appreciated too. Loved our stay! 

After a  2 year absence from Mexico we stayed at the hotel for 3 months (with the exception of a 10 day mini-vacation in Oaxaca). Same room and the same experience...Great! Got to travel with David and Rosy who own the place, go shopping with them and be a part of the life in this town up in the mountains.

 I suggest if you have the time to visit some of the villages surrounding this area. There are numerous fiestas during the year and each village has one. David and Rosy can help and I have a list made by my friend Jaime who lives there. We went to about 10 in the 3 months we were there.

  Also there are lots of hikes to waterfalls, pristine mountains, and canyons in the area. There are lots of guides but most of them are going to take you to the same rather touristy places. Jaime is a great guide and his English is excellent as he lived in the USA for more than 20 years. Drop me a line and I can give you his contact info.

 In the city there are 4 market days: Thursday to Sunday. Sunday is the largest and worth going to. An hour away is Zacapoxtla with a HUGE Wednesday market. Easily reached by local buses that leave every hour. A much larger city than Cuetzalan with a massive market that sprawls all over the city including vendors selling live turkeys, lots of locally harvested wild mushrooms, handmade ice cream at the zocalo, and a street lined with nothing but huge piles of corn. Make sure you go into the panaderia (bakery) along the zocalo on the left side as you are facing the municipal building. The place is gigantic and dates from 1968 I believe. The cinnamon rolls are amazing!!!

Enjoy your stay and make sure you try all the street and market food!! Especially tlacoyos and make sure you get the ones made from the leaves of an avocado tree, cooked over a coma and not fried!!.

Run by "Rosy" and David. Their 2 boys help out too when school is out in the summer. The rooftop views are great as are the rooms on the top floor. Coffee, pastries from the local bakery, homemade jam, gelatina and other assorted foods are served in the morning. 

  The hot water is supplied by solar collectors on the roof and with back-up gas heaters. The family composts all food and recycles all bottles, cans, paper, cardboard. They even recycle all the motor oil...a man comes by and buys it from them! All lighting is LED. WIFI and electricity are good unless the grid gets hit by lightning. Then cell service, WIFI and the rest has to wait.... That happened a few times during the 2 months we were there.

 The rooms are large, have handmade furniture, comfy beds and the place is super clean. Situated slightly above the main plaza it is a short walk down to anything you might need. Spanish is best used there but the owners do speak some English and have a dictionary handy for translations. 

  Any special needs or requests will be taken care of and they are super helpful navigating the city or any of the surrounding areas. Need a dentist, doctor, guide and they can help you in a jiffy

 A great guide that the hotel uses is Jaime who speaks fluent English as he spent time in Texas. I used him for all my travel needs especially to visit some of the remote villages during the summer fiestas and out of the way hikes. You can call him yourself at 233 126 4614.

Things to do:

  There are endless waterfalls, caves, villages and hiking in the area surrounding this city. Some places are touristy and others so remote you will not see anyone. Some you can do on your own and others you will need a guide just to figure where to go and how to travel via the collectivos in town.

  The large buses and the smaller collectivos (small vans) travel everywhere so a car is not needed there.They are cheap and go to the most remote villages on a regular schedule.

  During the year there are various fiestas in the villages which are heavily populated with indigenous Indians. Often 1-3 days long with food, music, fireworks, and processions through the towns. Without a guide these would be nearly impossible to find out where and when they are so that is where a good guide comes in. Since Jaime knew what I wanted to see he would ask around if he was not sure of what was happening in far off villages.

  In town there is a great museum that will fill you in on the history of the place and lots of artifacts and photos too. The big market day is Sunday and Thursday is good too.
   
 Zacapoaxtla is about 1 hour away by bus and is a much larger city. It has a massive Wednesday market that I went to 3 times. It is set up on the streets and fun to walk around for hours. The main plaza is flanked by 2 churches and lots of old buildings throughout the city. The ride there is spectacular and it passes Apulco which has a huge river, waterfall and a bridge to view the river. You can get out there and later hop on the bus and go to Zacapoaxtla.

  Always try the street food no matter where you are. Much of what is served there is NOT served in restaurants. I hardly ever ate in restaurants. Here's what to look for:
ice cream carts. tlayoyos, tamales, tacos, fresh orange and coconut juice, and carnitas. Check out the bakery behind the main church in Cuetzalan. They have a continuous stream of items out of the oven. Get the hot stuff!

 Fair warning about money: If you bring dollars nobody in town can cash it and you will have to travel to Zacapaoxtla and the Aztec bank there. In Cuetzalan there are 2 ATMs in town at the plaza to the right of the church. They are in the municipal building... one in the right front corner, the other off on the right side of it. They can both be out of service at once or if you are lucky they will both work. I hear there is one more at the hospital but that is a good hike from the center of town. Most merchants in town take cash ONLY.

I was there for two weeks. My room was comfortable and extremely clean, as were all the common areas. The hotel is in a great location, just a short walk to the town square, where there is a market Thursday-Sunday and a number of cafes. Cuetzalan is very picturesque and close to ruins, natural wonders and other smaller towns. We engaged a local guide, one of several known to the hotel. The family that runs the hotel are extremely accommodating, friendly and seem able to answer any question. There was nothing I didn't like about the hotel.

Beautiful surroundings, safe, exceptionally clean and welcoming. Would definitely recommend. Excellent location for the bus station and centre of town. The rooms are big and comfortable. It's in the middle of town so expect to hear dogs barking and cockerels crowing. 

Make sure you ask for Jaime to be your guide on a range of wonderful excursions. His knowledge of the area is outstanding; he really cares about your enjoyment and safety and his English is great. We would go back in a heartbeat!!! 

Family owned small hotel, clean, comfortable, quiet large room with king size bed.  Rosy and her boys were very helpful throughout our stay.  We would have liked storage space for our belongings and a room fan but it was still a good budget option.

This small, quiet place is two blocks directly above the main square. Nice, spacious, en suite rooms at a great price. Water was hot and shower pressure was good. We arrived early Sunday afternoon with the market in full swing and it was wall to wall vendors, many in native dress, until well after 5 pm. After shopping, walking, eating and seeing a performance of the voladores, rather than drive back to Puebla we stayed overnight and had our pick of rooms here. Light Mexican style breakfast of coffee and fruit included. Cuetzalan is surprisingly humid despite its altitude but fans in rooms made sleeping comfortable.
