Gasthof zum Breitenberg

We have been visiting the area for more than 25 years, and have always been pleased with where we stayed; this was our first time staying as far off the B28 as this, and it was heavenly. We were greeted by one of the family who own and operate the Gasthaus - expertly shown around the property and our room. Frau Altmann recommended the new 'premium Wanderwege' - paths we otherwise would not have known about - we hiked both of them during our time there and they were fabulous. The energy for our experience being wonderful was consistent all week by everyone at the Breitenberg including Christian Bächle (who is a wonderful chef!) helping me out when I managed to lock myself out of the safe. :-) Our questions were always met with enthusiasm and good grace. We stayed in a double room - it was spacious, recently done and super clean, even by German standards. :-) The bathroom was large, well equipped and well lit, the beds comfortable and the sitting area designed in a way that makes it feel separate from the sleeping area. Loads of storage space and windows, a lovely private balcony looking out on the hills. Very quiet at night, and far enough from a town that even the (charming as they are) church bells aren't heard at night as they chime the hours away. We always rent a car when staying in the Schwarzwald; it would be a must here as if you come by train and get a ride to the Gasthof, it is a good walk down and up to Bad Peterstal or Bad Griesbach, and a car allows for exploration of the towns in the area as well as access to other hiking trails with different vistas (some of the ones we like a lot are the trails leading to the Staufenberg Castle and the Mooskopf turm near Durbach). The breakfast was healthy, delicious and abundant, with loads of choice and home-made preserves. We ate several dinners at the restaurant and the meals were on par or better with our favourite restaurants in the area. It was super value-adding not to need to drive anywhere for a fabulous dinner. 'Good selection of wine, beer and desserts for those that are interested (and who isn't, after a good 12 km hike??) (Again, we have the experience to compare.) It's a great spot to launch a hike - and return to afterwards, sit outside and have a beverage or relax on the balcony. Having access to laundry facilities was a surprise - a nice thing as it can cut down on packing. A fridge is available for storing food in if you're not in one of the apartments - these are well equipped and lovely, too. It's a wonderful spot for a couple's holiday as well as families - lots for kids to do there, and the atmosphere is very child-positive. We would definitely return!
