A very good place to stay: staff was friendly and helpful in recommending local attractions.  The artwork is lovely and the staff are passionate talking about the art.  Filtered water and breakfast are provided.  Nice fireplace in the common area.  Rooms are clean and comfortable.  This is not your typical "backpackers" hostel, mostly due to the fact that the common area is not as chill as many hostel-stayers expect.  Definitely a different feel, but a cool and unique one.  Good mountain views, next to a cute kids park, and a short walk away from most attractions.  Very good location.

Managed to get a room here last minute for a night. Super friendly staff who helped me arrange tours to Pailin del Diablo and Casa de arbol (places that you should definitely visit when in Banos). Single room with a private bathroom was affordable (I think it was about $15) and the free breakfast provided was exceptional for a small hostel (eggs and ham, bread, yoghurt and fruit, coffee and juice). The hostel is also within walking distance of the main plaza and church. 

My only issue was that the hot water wasn’t working, which kinda sucked because it was cold and rainy throughout my stay in Banos (and a hot bath would have been nice). But other than that, this is a really nice place! They have a mini museum exhibiting some local artefacts and a nice lounge with a fireplace. It’s kid-friendly too cuz they were fully booked with two families with a dozen kids the day that I left. 

This hostal is just a few blocks away from the busy center of Baños. Quiet... Good internet, hot water in the shower, friendly staff. The breakfast is really good. And of course.... the art. The entrance and central parts are amazing. Full of art and kitsch...

This is a quirky and impressive little gem of a place to stay. The owner is friendly, informative and helpful. The hotel has art collections as well as local artists' work ongoing. It also has collections of odd things like sewing machines, scales, skins painted on by indigenous artists, indigenous art, musical instruments. The atmosphere is relaxed and  informal and you will feel very welcome.  Whether family of alone you will fit in. The breakfast is amazing.

The hostel is indeed a nice quaint little museum, full of paintings on the wall and artifacts scattered around. A nice open place in the center with a fireplace. The owners are very friendly and helpful. We could even borrow some swim caps which we needed for the hot springs. Wi-Fi was good, although there were not many guests when we were there, due to the low season. Also the rooms are full of panting sand have good quality beds. The shower is good, but has little room to maneuver. 

From the hotel it is a short distance to the city center and the hot springs. 

We loved our stay here. 

Not sure I should give 3 or 4 points ... I choose 4 mainly due to the helpful staff member from day 2 on. Checkin was strange, first they had to call the staff and someone who speaks a few words English, then asking them questions about busses etc. made them just offer full day excursions of a friendly travel company which we kindly rejected. Next day other staff member was helpful and arranged a taxi ride through the waterfalls for us.

The place is artful, yes, very much so and that is the big plus + the friendly atmosphere. The rooms however are the opposite and the bathrooms barely allow you to turn in them. Walls are thin as paper and when party animals loudly returned on our second night at 3 am our night basically was over. 

Also I have read on here several times how great the breakfast would be and I must say I disagree. It’s not bad, but it’s also nothing special at all. The reviews might come from people who normally book a dorm bed and eat a burger as breakfast. Don’t get me wrong, breakfast was just fine but absolutely nothing special for a 40-dollar-room.

I would recommend to stay at Huillacuna for 1-2 nights, mainly to enjoy the art collection and paintings, as this was our reason to book the place as well. The inconveniences weren’t that bad and the price is ok including the breakfast.
