Mealy Chenda Guest House & Restaurant

I've been staying here on and off for 14 years. The bloke who runs the place is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and well presented. OK everything is a bit dated but I quite like that mid 90's look!! I've got no complaints.  I always look at the room before paying and if I'm not satisfied he shows me another. I've never booked online and that way you save a few quid. 

I have stayed here before and it was good then. good room, fairly clean, good tv, nice firm bed and the main factor to go there is the balcony!! I had a great view of the sunset from room. Near to very good cheap restaurants and bars too.

Stayed at Mealy Chenda Guesthouse on Victory Hill in Sihanoukville when I first relocated to Cambodia 9 years ago. Back then Mealy was the classiest hotel on The Hill. Had a positive experience there – service was attentive, rooms were well furnished and maintained and the overall mood was pleasant. Due to that stay when travelers would ask for a classy place to lodge on the sort of ramshackle Victory Hill I’d recommend Mealy. 
For Khmer New Year this year I booked a room there online. Well, what a gloomy surprise nine years has done to Mealy. The times have change Mealy and its rooms, service and attitude are mere ghosts of my fond memories. 
Arrived there Thursday evening, dog-tired from two days on the bus. First room they placed us had unfortunate electrical issues – power would only stay on for 4 minutes before automatically shutting off. Second room had no workable electrical outlets except for the one that powered the refrig and TV and after settling in for 15 minutes we were told we had to move because it was pre-booked by another guest. Third room had no refrig or table. Anyway about an hour and fifteen minutes after getting there we finally had a room with proper furnishings and power.
Breakfast is included in the room cost. Went to the restaurant and initially was given a five or six page menu with a wide range of brekkie choices. Two minutes later the waitress shyly handed us a one sheet menu with an extremely limited number meal choices. She apologized for the menu confusion, though the options on the one page menu were basically tokens and skimpy. No meat options, no cheese options and no vegetable options. Portions could politely be  “diet plates”. Definitely not filling.
Next day we spent a few hours at the nearby waterfall. Got back at 4PM, hot, dusty and thirsty. Looked in the refrig for the two bottles of water that were supposed to be supplied to guests daily…… no water. The wife went to find a worker to ask for a couple of water bottles. The worker said she’d get it in 10 minutes since she was busy at the moment. Two hours later still no water. And the room was not tidied up or bed made. Very sloppy service and maintenance. 
The devil is in the details. The hallmark of a classy hotel is found in the attention the staff pays to details. A good hotel is run like a precise Swiss watch; a lousy hotel is run like a slapdash forgetful jumble. Sad to say, Mealy Chenda has devolved over the years from a topnotch inn to a disappointing, shabbily run has-been. 
A gyp, worth half the price charged. Lodged at far superior places recently for a third the cost.

Filthy, terrible, the 10$ room i had, i had arrived late at night and tired and didn’t check the bathroom properly. What is saw after a while, was a toilet seat covered in yellowish orange piss, on top of that there was a used condom on the toilet seat, i wish i could post pics here really!!! The shower had no tap to turn on/off, luckily i always have my Victorinox with me, so i could manage to shower. The “freshly washed” towels had a long black hair on it... great place if you want to pick up a slapper and take here there, but there are far cheaper places for that... Room 207 it was...

Mealy Chenda Guesthouse Sihanoukville, Cambodia

After nearly two months in Cambodia we decided to treat ourselves to air conditioned accommodation for our last few days.  We booked here for four nights through Agoda.  It appeared to be good value for money & when we were shown our first room we thought we'd hit the jackpot.  It was a huge room with a little kitchenette & a balcony with views of the sea but the aircon did not work & the room did not have a fan so we asked to move because it was just too hot.  Without any problem to manager moved us into a second room.  What a terrible room that was!!  The front door had to literally be shoulder barged to get open, the bathroom door handle had been ripped out which left a huge hole in the door & the toilet had no seat.  We pointed these issues out & were told because we had such a great deal through Agoda that other rooms were not available to us.  We accepted to pay $10 more a night for an 'upgrade' to a superior room.  The third room we were moved to was a bit rough around the edges but comfortable.  One problem - the aircon didn't work!  Argh!  We decided to leave & find somewhere else despite not getting a refund.

Although our experience was extremely frustrating I must say the manager never once lost his patience with us & tried his hardest to get us comfortable.  I know a few people who have stayed here both short & long term & have had no issues.
