Casa Candelaria B&B

We enjoyed our 3 day stay in March. This remodeled house has nice wood and ceramic, plus local artist decorations. Fresh fruit was available, as well as tea or coffee and the kitchen. We spent most of our time out walking the quaint old streets of La Candelaria.

Very homely and stylish. The upper rooms
are the best. One of them has an open plan bedroom cum toilet bathroom which might not suit all modesties. Bed was pretty hard and shower tepid for the price. Made up for by the rich character of the place. Good breakfasts.

I stayed at the Casa Candelaria for five nights in January 2017, paying a total of around 190 GBP, which I thought represented very good value for money (I made the booking online).  I found it a very good base for exploring Bogota, especially the historic and most attractive part of the capital in which it is located (La Candelaria).  There is no shortage of cafes, bars and restaurants within five minutes' walk of the CC; quite a few of them, however, are not open in the evening.  The worthwhile Museo Botero and Casa de Moneda museum are also located nearby.  It takes no time at all to walk downhill to the main square, the Plaza de Bolivar.  

The house is located near the top of Calle 9 (where it meets Carrera 2), so getting to it involves a bit of a climb, though it was manageable even in the thin air (Bogota is located some 2,600 metres above sea level, so some acclimatisation is required).  The B&B, which is owned by a couple called Alex and Eunice, has great charm and character; crammed full of art works, it has many quirky and imaginative touches created by A&E, who clearly have flair for interior design.  It is not a place you could easily forget.  The owners were on holiday outside Bogota during my stay, so unfortunately I did not meet them, but I was very well looked after by their delightful and most helpful housekeeper, Edith; she speaks no English, so I had plenty of opportunities to practise my Spanish.  She very kindly provided me with an electric heater, without which I would have shivered in my room, as the weather was cold during my stay.

What did I particularly like about the Casa Candelaria?  Well, the bed was large and comfortable, the parquet floor in my room was very nice and the wi-fi connectivity was excellent.  Everything in the beautifully-tiled shared bathroom/toilet (located on the opposite side of the corridor from my room) worked well, although it took some time for the water to become hot.  Most memorable for me, however, were the superb breakfasts prepared by Edith every morning - especially the fresh fruit and her beautifully made omelettes.  A lovely relaxing start to the day, chatting to fellow guests.

On a less positive note, the sound-proofing left a great deal to be desired, although in fairness it is difficult to see how it could be improved, given the open-plan nature of the house and the lay-out of the four rooms.  There was no space at all for hanging clothes in my room (a moveable clothes rack would have been ideal).  There were also no blinds or curtains for the two skylights and high windows, which effectively ruled out afternoon naps.  I am not sure how easy it would be to fit these, but I think it could be done.  I also found that there was too much clutter on the desks.

The house has a beautiful roof terrace, but it accessble only via one of the four rooms - and it wasn't mine!  Such a pity that it cannot be reached via a separate staircase, so that guests staying in any of the four rooms can enjoy it. 

All in all, I was very happy with my stay at the Casa Candelaria and would certainly stay there again and recommend it to travellers on not too tight a budget.

Casa Candelaria is a beautiful home turned into a B&B. I absolutely loved the patio with the hammock and plants. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful. We had a late flight and they allowed a late check out for us. We arrived back at the hotel at 8pm to check out and were told they would only take Colombian pesos for payment and no credit cards. There was a communication barrier between the host and us as our Spanish isn’t great. We tried using translation apps to help but still had difficulty communicating. We told her we did not have enough pesos left to cover it so the host told us to goto the nearest ATM to get the pesos. We asked if it was safe to walk there and a man said maybe, not reassuring at all. After going to 2 ATMs and not being successful we came back to the house and she ended up calling in our credit card since the machine has apparently been broke for quite some time. We take some responsibility in this happening but it left us feeling like they just didn’t want to call in our card in for some reason. 


Beautiful house, just be aware of payment process

Casa Candelaria is a beautiful old home located in the heart of the Candelaria district, Bogota. From the outside, the home is quite unassuming, but once you enter you'll understand the magic of the space. 

The main room you walk into has a hammock, large couches, dining table and a kitchen where breakfast is served every morning. In total, I believe the home as 4 or 5 rooms, mostly located upstairs. Each one has its own character, fun decorations and bohemian vibe! 

The downside of this B&B is that as all the rooms are located in the same house you can hear everything that is going on every where. They dont all have their own washrooms either (which we were not aware of). We found it very difficult to sleep at night because we could hear the man in the room next to us having a coughing fit all night and the other room's occupants took multiple trips to the bathrooms. The doors and floors are very loud, so if you are a light sleeper this might not be the place for you. I am sad to say that I probably wouldn't stay here again, despite it being such a beautiful home with great staff. We paid quite a lot for a two night stay with very little sleep.
