Yasur View Bungalows

Tanna Island

It has great views of the volcano but is completely isolated. It is difficult to get to the volcano from here. Walking is about an hour on rutted car tracks and narrow paths through the bush with no signs. There is one car (ute taxi) and it may not be available. Then you are basically trapped and wasting your time. Instead of staying here where it's isolated stay across the road from the volcano entrance at Thomas place. That is an authentic experience, you can easily get to early morning or evening volcano tours and it is closer to the beaches at Port Resolution. There is also a "shop" near Thomas place. Thomas place is called "Yasur tree house and campround".  Some people have confused  Mikes and Thomas place in these reviews. I went to both. Go to Thomas' place.

Don't stay here. 

This was really a mixed experience. The good things first. The bungalows have a perfect view on volcano Yasur, you can watch, hear and feel it night and day. It is an easy 25 minute walk along the riverbed for a swim, a good 50 minutes to the custom village or 45 minutes to the volcano entrence. It is really nice walking through the rain forest there. The bungalow was basic but just right for the occasion. You have electric light and in the evenings you could charge everything as long as the generator is running. Meals were provided in a simple hut.
To the irritating things. Perhaps it was bad timing, that the general election was on its peak, but:
Arriving at Tanna, we waited 2 hours and 40 minutes without water in the hot mini airport for our transfer. A lot of people tried to contact our host for us, but without success. 15 minutes more and we would have cancelled the trip off. Needless to say, that everthing was arranged and again confirmed the day before.
Then the car finally arrived. No warm welcome, no sorry just business as usual - a bad start for the day. 
Finally arriving at the bugalows, we tried to arrange the activities for the next day. It is in the middle of nowhere and you need Truck to get around (except the hiking part). Then we were told that the car is on campaign... We argued a lot and finally decided to try walking to the volcano (good choice) and only arrange the pickup from there. Needless to say that we waited again, this time 30 minutes after the tour. Again the locals tried to help and kept an eye on us. The last of them waited until we got picked up. No sorry, no nothing. 
There was again no car option for the next day, so we hiked another round. So much for reliability.
But the saddest part, we did not feel welcomed there. No warmth, only minimal interaction, no meals together.
We felt like a real nuisance to the hosts, not like guests.
We are okay with basic living but not with social distancing and missing reliability.

mixed experience

My stay at Yasur View Bungalows was unforgettable in many ways.
First of all, Mike and his family is very supportive and helpfull throughout the whole stay. Moreover, the accommodation is very authentic, in the middle of Tannas Jungle on a nice little hill overlooking the great Mt Yasur. Moreover, there is so much to do around the area and you could easily extend the trip to a couple of days in this remote little paradise. What a fantastic experience!
Just be aware to bring enough (lots!) of cash to Tanna - preferably Vanuatu-vatu - as the costs on this remote place are understandably a bit higher. 
Otherwise enjoy your stay and indulge in the real Tanna lifestyle.

Authentic Island Experience

For a truly unique experience, I would highly recommend Yassur View Bungalows! We loved it! The bungalows sit high on a mountain with views of the volcano. The location is spectacular and the lush garden pristine. Mike Sam, the owner here, really looked after us and takes great pride in his property. We only booked to stay one night, but I wish we’d stayed at least two nights to really relax and enjoy the view.  

All tourist experiences on Tanna seem expensive, but we found Mike’s accommodation and transfer prices to be more reasonable than other tour operators. The import taxes, running costs and car loan interest rates for 4WDs on Tanna are very high, which explains why transport rates around the island need to be so high to cover these costs.

Unique experience, wish we had stayed longer!

Great view from the bungalow balcony, I can see and hear volcano at day and night. Friendly family and delicious healthy homemade food. Wish I could stayed longer, definitely would come back again, highly recommend. 從陽台就能看見火山，覺得很棒！還能嚐到家常菜，大推薦！適合喜歡親近自然的旅人。

Great experience in Tanna

I enjoyed my stay at Yasur view until Mike kicked us out. Mike was very friendly until we tried to haggle a price on what appeared an overpriced transfer 4000vt for a 10 minute journey to the local beach (for which we had waited all day for him to take us). 
The bungalows were basic and the sheets did not smell clean. The showers were cold but good pressure and the food was great although they were rather put out at us wanting lunch and dinner. Tourism has not yet reached Tanna and it reflects in Mikes attitude of people would normally happily come here to give us money not actually offering a fair service.
The views were amazing at night of the bubbling volcano. I think this place could be great if Mike added a few local experiences or options of things to do without trying to con you with ridiculous priced transfers. It is cheaper to stay near the airport and visit the volcano then stay in basic accommodation and experience local life of which the experience is limited. I am sad to write this review as I think Mike could make this place great however kicking out two young girls in the middle of nowhere is not a way to treat anyone and frankly is terrifying.

Stranded due to hot temper

We stayed there for a couple of nights 
We had direct view of Yasur from our tree top bungalow.
The family are very welcoming and we really enjoyed playing with the children.
He area is very quiet and a bit far from the volcano but it is worth the views
The food was good, very abundant, and we also loved their cat!
Only thing, is that the water from the shower is cold because there are limited electricity, gas, etc, not an issue, but we had to shower at night after visiting the volcano... woke us up! All part of the fun

Great view, nice people

Our stay with mike and Lina was absolutely trouble free. From being transported from the airport (2 hours away) to the activities, including the kastom village tour and hot springs. Mike let us stay in the treehouse at no extra charge for the first night, but both the treehouse and bungalow had amazing views of Mt Yasur. Roger our guide for the kastom tour was also amazing, a wealth of knowledge about the local people and area, much better than the other guide we saw, roger also escorted us to the volcano entrance at no extra charge. The food made by Lina was delicious and I could not fault. The rooms are basic but considering you are on an isolated, remote island overlooking a volcano asking for more would seem absurd. A good toilet and shower was provided, as well as clean rainwater to drink (*still used my life straw though). Mike was happy to offer us multiple options for activities in the surrounding area, and I highly recommend the village tour and hot springs (obviously the volcano is a given), the hot springs will take you through the John Frum village also. The main upside of staying with mike is the ease of getting to the volcano itself, the resorts by the airport are a 2 hour ride back and forth. Do yourself a favour and stay overlooking Mt Yasur with the locals rather than in a sterile resort. Thanks again to Mike, Lina and Roger for all their hospitality.
