The Witchery by the Castle

I took my partner to eat lunch at The Witchery for her birthday, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I've won brownie points for life with the experience. The staff were super accommodating and friendly, writing a birthday letter at my request and catering to dietary requirements efficiently and with minimal fuss. Our main server was James (I think!) and he was a delight, conversing with us between courses and making us feel welcomed and looked after. We also had another lass who came with dessert (sadly didn't get her name) who was similarly lovely. 

The food was, simply put, incredible and high praise go to the chef(s) who prepared possibly the best mushroom velouté I've had. We both had venison for main and it was divine - perfectly tender, accompanied with the right amount of a beautiful sauce. We shared a chocolate torte for dessert which (perhaps you've guessed) was amazing and surprisingly not too heavy even after two other courses.

This is not a cheap dining experience, but that's to be expected. With fine dining you sometimes get the sense that you're paying more than the value of the food, but I would say with certainty that this is not the case at The Witchery. Superb.

Possibly the best food I've ever eaten, in one of the most atmospheric venues I've seen

Beautiful place to eat right at the base of Edinburgh Castle.  Service was fair, our waiter went off duty and was replaced by another. I think we got lost a bit in the shuffle.  We didn’t receive our drinks with dinner.  Our meal was nice but not spectacular.  However, I would still recommend dining here just for the ambiance.

Gorgeous Restaurant

The restaurant is lovely and the food was good. Service was fairly slow but this didn't have a major impact. The decor speaks for itself and is a real feast for the eyes. 
Would recommend to visit at least once if your ever in Edinburgh. 

Lovely food and insane surroundings

As we were in Edinburgh, we just had to visit 'the Witchery' again, to share the good things ((we experienced previously) with other family members.
So, we were with a small group of 6 and were welcomed very friendly. Assistance was offered to help my MiL down the stairs. It was a special atmosphere, the darkness, the lights and the decor.
And we were guided to our table, after which we were handed over the menu's and wine list. 
We started with a few drinks, some just wanted something non-alcoholic, but I (and some others) opted for a Kir Royale, which tasted fine and very nice. Nothing to over powering, well balanced.
After this I ordered 6 Oysters, natural. served with Mignotte-dressing (the other option was Bloody Mary), but assuming the Mignotte would be nicer mélange of tastes, I opted for that. For main I ordered the 28 Day Dry-Aged Scotch Fillet of Beef, prepared rare) to maintainability the good tastes and protects the delicate texture of this good high quality meat).
We ordered red and white wines to accompany the food. A bottle of Frans Haas Pinot Grigio 2022 and a bottle of Ilatium Morini Valpolicella.
At the table was fresh water present as well.
The glasses were fine, very nice to drink the wine from , but even the the water tasted very good, from the thin glass.
My Oysters tasted delicious, the texture, its taste and the saltiness, the finely cut onions, in vinegar and a few drips of Tabasco (the bottle was served as well).
It was clear the staff watched everything and everyone very well, as our glasses, water and wines were filled at the right moment and they were committed to offer a pleasant experience.
Now my Fillet was served and it appeared great, dark from the outside and nice and pink inside. It tasted delicious.
At this moment I unfortunately had an obligation for which I unexpectedly had to leave immediately, not being able to finish the evening as planned.
The witchery-staff, Diego and his colleagues showed their understanding. The others finished the visit as planned and hd a great time
Thank you very much for the evening (although short for myself). I hope we will be able to visit again one of these days, and have a great time, without exceptions.

A great visit, with super food & service like one would expect

I was really excited to go to the Witchery but my experience was awful. The staff are awful, sarcastic and rude. There was no flexibility in the booking, were only able to say NO with no compassion or alternative. Not recommended at all!


Not recommended 

Never imagined that one of the most romantic restaurants I’ve ever been to would be in Scotland . This was so lovely, cosy, elegant , historical and quant. Service was impeccable. Downside is that it’s quite expensive and not a big choice for vegetarians.

We had a wonderful evening at the witchery. The food was wonderful and the service perfect. Staff were attentive but not intrusive. We had the chateaubriand which was amazing, beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. Would definitely recommend.

We expected it to be good and it delivered.
Warm welcome. Unobtrusive helpful service. Luxurious stay in The Old Rectory suite.  Attention to detail throughout. Delightful dinner. 
My wife had always wanted to go to The Witchery and It certainly did not disappoint.  Would love to return.

High Expectations Met. Fantastic

Myself and my partner stayed here and for £700 a night we were expecting something really very  special, we must have misread the website as we thought it was a 5 star hotel. It was more like an air bnb. The location of the rooms aren’t where the Witchery is… they are down a wee bit on the royal mile across the way.. staff were very nice throughout so can’t fault them. The staff at Prestonfield the sister hotel were outstanding. So when we went there first it was a little underwhelming with the Witchery being more like self catering. For £700 for less than 24 hours we thot no request would be too big or too small. But to not even have room service. Was crazy. Suite was beautiful but not practical, because of the style some of the furniture just wasn’t comfortable to sit on. The bedroom was very comfy tho! However you could hear the people above us having a conversation and them walking about all night. Again for the price I don’t expect to be hearing anything from upstairs! Understand it’s an old building. But it did wake me up first thing in the morning. Good point is that you can get Deliveroo right to the door in peace. But when paying so much I would have maybe expected some extras, such as room service, a foood menu etc. because we paid so much we wanted to get as much use out of the room as possible. We didn’t fancy sitting in the restraunt but as the rooms have a dining table I would have ordered and ate in the room. Me and my partner don’t ever get time of from the kids so was really just underwhelming. The staff were nice and the room was very nice. Just overpriced for what you actually get. And you feel totally separated from the Witchery, it’s like you are just taken across the road and left and that’s it. We choose to stay here as we heard amazing things about the service to guests. Not that the staff were anything but amazing I think there is just a very strong focus on the restaurant. As we only saw them on check in and check out. So it didn’t feel like we stayed at the witchery. Breakfast in the morning was awful. Service was nice. But again when you spend so much the breakfast could have been better, the sausages were inedible. Scrambled eggs were really good tho. It was just very up and down the whole stay! But we did have fun despite all this! And would stay again. But would probably wait until there is a deal on as wouldn’t pay same price again unless above issues were addressed. 

Nice but well overpriced !

We were fortunate enough to get a table at the Witchery, for lunch, without a reservation. What a special experience! A truly unique and beautiful setting. Exceptional service. Exceptional menu, drinks and food. Would return! Highly recommend!
