The Seaside Garden

Situated on a VERY busy location of Buccoo. In front of this guesthouse always shouting men who spend the day there. On Sunday the most noisy event we have ever witnessed: it is called the Sunday School; enormous loudspeakers just in front of the guesthouse and this 'event' lasts till early in the morning. Next door, sometimes a barking dog through the night. As to the guesthouse itself: owner needs to invest into some necessary changes! A front door which now consists of an iron gate closed by a chain: irritating that one has to open this as a guest; rooms with little space to store your things and curtains on only one window so that at 6 am the sun shines in your face.

A noisy stay in a guesthouse that urgently needs renovation.

4 rooms guesthouse. Rm#1 and #2 were bigger. Stayed in rm #3 and #4 on 6/7 Mar. Last minute decision going to Tobago using the ferry and renting a car on arrival.  
Arrived at noon for check-in, one of the room was ready, dumped our stuff and off to the beaches. 

Gwendloyn gave us the dos & don'ts of the Guesthouse and showed the room that was ready. We are low maintenance, cold beer is all we need and ate at the local eatery.

Shared kitchen with utensils for cooking and serving provided. No oil/spices provided but saw some, probably from previous guests. 
Double doors fridge with ice maker. 
No shampoo/soap provided.

Check out the restaurant at Miller's Guest House, very short walk.

Don't stay on a Sunday night if you don't like live/loud music, comment from a guest. 

In the evening we ended up having cocktails at the patios with other guests we met. Shut'er down at 10pm. Bring bug juice if you enjoy sitting outside having a few socialables. 

Keep Calm and Tobago On

The guest house is if anything unloved and uncared for, this has nothing to do with the landlady being overrun with work! She chooses to subsidise her income with airport runs, commission from local attractions and finding full time rentals for current occupants,  rather than looking after the property.
Please see the pictures I have uploaded and taken at the time of stay. The only area that is semi clean are the kitchen work surfaces, which the guests look after. The landlady explained on arrival that there was only 1 key for the room yet handed another key to someone that was no long resident in the room another key, after I’d had a fall. The best words to describe are dirty, disgusting, untrustworthy and unethical!! If they spent their time doing their job, the place would improve 100% apart obviously for the music through until 4am every Monday morning.

The guest house is just across the street from the Buccoo Beach. 
Had  to share the kitchen and living area. 
The rooms were clean. 

The manager Penny was very helpful indeed. For a small fee she picked me up at the airport and taxied me around if necessary . She also arranged a taxi for the trip back to the airport.

There is a room with a washer and dryer ...

There is a bakery a few meters away.

There is an Italian restaurant next door , and a little food court across the street delicious food) and a little grocery up the road. 

However I would suggest to carry some food supplies for the first night/day until you  settled.

Seaside Garden is directly in front of the beach, but you have to cross the street and walk through a compound in order to get there...so while it is ’beach front’...it isn’t.

However a Boardwalk is being constructed so anytime now, getting straight to the beach will be possible.

For the price it is a very good place to stay.

If you like ‘low key’...just the beach, and are on a budget , then this may be a great choice for you.

Seaside Garden Guesthouse...

The location of this guesthouse is great if you want to stay in the heart of Buccoo Bay. And I would recommend doing so if you want to experience life like a local. It's steps away from the beach and the event "center" which is functions like a town square. Gwendloyn, the manager was really helpful and even picked us up from the airport. She also helped arrange for our tours. I'm not sure who the prior manager was who resulted in such bad reviews, but rest assured, Gwendolyn the new manager, has made it very pleasant to stay here. 

One potential negative about the location is that every Sunday, there is an event called Sunday School where locals come to party, eat, and enjoy great entertainment like a steel pan performance. Therefore, if you're staying on a Sunday night, be prepared to bring ear plugs because the music will be very loud. This was not an issue on other nights though. Although this was one potential downside there are many positives. For instance, on a Thursday evening, we enjoyed the performance of locals who were playing traditional drums. There was no fee and you can sit and have a drink while listening to the performance on the bay. 

We cooked in the house's kitchen which has all the equipment you would need, but you will need to bring your own oil and spices, which can be bought at a nearby store. Shampoo and soap is also not provided. One major plus was there was an ice maker in the freezer. 

My husband and I stayed during Easter, which is a huge deal on both islands. Many days before and after easter are treated as part of the holiday. The annual goat race was held on the Monday after easter Sunday, which should not be missed. It's an all day festival with food, beverages, vendors, goat racing and crab racing. It was unique, fun, and entertaining. Plus, before the races start, a parade takes place where people, primary children and teens dress in spectacular costumes and the atmosphere is truly exhilarating. It was an unforgettable experience.

In the heart of Buccoo Bay

we really liked our stay. Gwendolyn, the new manager, was very friendly and helped us with any question and request we had. The room/apartment on the first floor is lovely, spacious,has great views, a nice outside space. we felt very much at home and can just warmly recommend this place!

Great location, friendly welcome

We were taken in by the lovely ocean views of this guest house posted all over the internet. 

We had exchanged emails with Astrid the 'Born Again Christian' who runs this very gloomy guest house. It's large, dusty dark and we had bad vibes from the moment we entered.

We were shown to a room in the basement or should I say Cellar. It was dark, gloomy, mosquito infested and with a view overlooking a very dirty basement yard with rusty pipes etc.

We had paid one night in advance and seriously could not wait to move out the next day. We awoke at 5am and packed. Astrid acted as though she was very surprised to see us leave, but I doubt it's the first time that guests were conned into believing this guest house was something it is not, and moved out asap.

The basement kitchen is large dark dusty and gloomy. Astrid has posted 'Jesus Loves you' stickers on each cupboard space with a number of the room of the guest it was meant for.

Her partner is a very negative man, we were so depressed listening to him.  We seriously could not wait to leave this place. Yes the view from the rooms at the top of the house are nice  but she is charging $100 a night for those rooms. A complete rip off. We had booked on the basis that the rooms we saw on their website and various other travel sites was the room we would be getting. How wrong we were.

We were bitten alive by mosquitos, the bed as uncomfortable, the room was grubby and in need of repainting. When we told her at check out that it was not at all as we had expected Astrid just shrugged her shoulders and replied ..'It Is What It Is'!.

Says it all really.

No way would I recommend this guest house, it was reminiscent of those scene from the movie the 'Shining' large dark corridors, dusty dark and creepy.!.

Do Not Be Taken In By The Pictures - Not At All As We Expected- Like the Hotel in 'The Shining'!

Astrid kindly collected us from the airport and on the way to Seaside Garden she showed us where the shops and restaurants are, which was very helpful.   Our apartment was spacious, clean and very well equipped.   Views from the lounge and the sundeck towards Buccoo Bay are gorgeous.

Excellent restaurants, take away food options and shops are very close by.   The beach is gorgeous and generally not too busy.   

Astrid is an excellent host and helped us with car rental and taxis from reliable locals.
We had a really enjoyable stay.   

Just a tip........If you are staying on a Sunday night make sure you have some good sound deadening earplugs.  Sunday school is literally out side the front of the property and, whilst its a .great local attraction, it is VERY loud and goes on until the early hours of Monday morning!

A Good Choice

This guest house did have all the amenities such as AC, ensuite private bathroom and laundry. 

We just had a feeling of having the religious beliefs of the host and some other guests pushed quite strongly. They would gather in the main areas of the house which other guests have to walk through to go outside or get to the kitchen and it was very awkward. 

It was like being at church when you didn't choose to go to church almost all the time. I have no problem with anyone else's beliefs but I don't want them pushed on me when I'm holidaying in a place I'm paying for. 

Otherwise, we had to look around for toilet paper etc when we ran out but the host did pick us up from the airport. 

After interacting with the hosts of another guesthouse (Fish Tobago Guesthouse), we felt we could have made a better choice in places to stay as the other hosts interacted with their guests a lot more. (Such as holding BBQ's at their property, etc)
