RUN! Don't walk away! This place is weird and awful.  Just being completely honest!  It's like visiting a hoarders place - too too many antiques crammed in together along with art, sculptures and overgrown jungle plants! Everything is just piled on top of other things! Oh and continuously screaming parrots! And it's filthy and gross. Spider webs and thick dust everywhere!  Seriously hasn't been cleaned in decades. The doors have large gaps at bottom and lizards and roaches coming into rooms and bathrooms! Hazardous brick steps that are dangerously crumbly and stairs throughout that are steep and dark. The entire place is so dark and should be the set of some vampire movie. 
Water in shower is either absolutely freezing or scalding hot.  This place is a nightmare.

DISGUSTING and GROSS!

If you're looking for generic luxury stay like a Hilton, move on. However, if you consider yourself more of an adventurer, then this is where you want to stay (the beds here are super comfortable, though - don't worry)! 
Other reviews have mentioned the antiquities and the amazing art, and this inn really does have those in abundance. You essentially get the run of the place - carte blanche to explore this whole sprawling estate, and all of the curiosities in ALL of the nooks and crannies (there are SO MANY). I ended up spending more time wandering the inn than I did seeing the rest of Old San Juan! 
The restaurant/bar, The Cannon Club, has good food and great mixologists. When I went down there for dinner, a couple of talented jazz pianists were playing and they were accompanied by Jan's bird retinue, which made watching even more enjoyable.
One thing I must add: Why have none of the other reviews mentioned that this place is haunted?? There's no way I'm the only one who got visited by the ghosts. My bed in the Ocean Suite was insanely soft and lovely, but I kept getting awakened by "visitors". The first one startled the heck out of me and I thought he was a lost hotel patron but the doors and windows were locked (I got up and checked) and he didn't make any noise when walking. I went back to sleep for a bit but honestly for a little while it was like Grand Central Station for ghosts up there. 
All in all, a definite 10/10. The Gallery Inn is an experience I will remember for the rest of my life, and I honestly didn't mind the ghosts.

A Cabinet of Curiosities, perfect for explorers!

The location is central Old San Juan within walking distance to many cafes, shops, and tourist attractions. It’s far from a swimming beach. The ground is beautiful. The birds are loud and entertaining. The staff is wonderful. The room is medieval. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom has not been updated since early 1900s. My suitcase sits on the floor. There is no closet or dresser. Yellow condensation dripped from the ceiling. My windows are two square holes in medieval wooden doors that you lock with a 2x4 bar across. Black birds try to hop in the room. My room could use some modern  amenities and TLC.

There are no elevators. The steps are cobblestones uneven and very steep.

A medieval hotel experience 

First the positive: The Gallery Inn is in the heart of old town, within walking distance of interesting things to visit in Old San Juan. If you like seeing ancient walls with fountains and brick passageways and parrots, as we did, this is a totally unique place to visit....but NOT to stay in. I can also point out that the bed was comfortable and I commented to my husband, trying to be positive, that I liked the bed spread.
Now the negative: If you have ANY kind of mobility issues, ie bad knees, feet, etc. this place is difficult to maneuver around. We saw people much younger than we are, having difficulty getting their luggage up and down the steep staircases to many of the rooms. There is NO elevator. And the steps are narrow, rock, and hazardous. The web site advertises a continental breakfast. There was nothing. Occasionally there would be a pot of coffee downstairs, but with no cups or condiments (like sugar, cream etc.) to put in coffee. Our room was up 4 flights of steep stairs, and felt more than something I would have stayed in years ago...rather like a youth hostel. We had a TINY bedroom with an air conditioner that ran 24/7 over the bed that leaked and had water running down the wall. We tried adjusting the temperature of the air conditioner and the controller did not work. You could see daylight through big cracks in the wall and doors, and see mold where it had been leaking. The headboard was not attached to the bed or the wall. There was a BIG step up to the equally tiny bathroom. Places to plug in phones, etc. were either hidden or non existent. There is no room service. No one cleaned our room in the 6 days we were there. We had to ask for clean towels. The room was filthy. We are NOT neat freaks but when a place looks it has never been really cleaned, something is wrong. At one point I brought a sack of track downstairs to the front desk and asked the person at the desk where I could dump it. He gave me a wth look but took it reluctantly. Expect noise. They give out ear plugs at the front desk. When asking about them, we were told on the weekends, the bars across the street get really noisy. Really. All night long. The water pressure in the shower was like trying to shower under a sink faucet. Several times we lost hot water completely and this was only after a few minutes. We ate there one night and were not impressed. We ate outside on one of the patios and as it got dark, the lights did not work so we ate in the dark, The food was ordinary, not worth what it cost.
The people that were periodically at the front desk area were pleasant for the most part but it was clear they had NOTHING to do with the running of the place so asking them about things like the lack of breakfast, hot water, towels, etc. did no good whatsoever. It's too bad there is not more attention towards giving people who are paying premium prices for a unique, positive experience. Their customer service is zilch. We thought about relocated but would have still had to pay for our room for the remaider of the time. It became painfully clear that the owners (management ) DOES NOT CARE. They get their money regardless. 
I tend to be a huge review reader before we book places. I had read reviews similar to mine, but we took a huge leap faith with "it can't be that bad" and "it looks so interesting and unique." Yes, it was that bad. And yes it was interesting and unique. We have experienced it once. Never again.

You've been warned!

I would recommend this hotel for a unique experience in Old San Juan.  The building itself is about 500 years old and each room is uniquely decorated with sculptures and paintings. There are some amazing views and the courtyard is filled with lush plants.  The inner rooms are a little dark, but there are high ceilings which make the rooms feel more open.  On Saturday nights the neighborhood is very lively with a lot of music. I was not bothered by the noise, but there are earplugs available at the front desk.  The staff is very friendly and the beds were comfortable.

Unique Hotel in Old San Juan

We booked a Top Suite with patio & full view of the ocean or Old San Juan four months prior. They put us in a family room with a partial ocean view.  No explanation/refund/credit given.  It felt like I had reserved  a sports car rental then went to pick it up  months later only to be issued a family van. We would have been returning customers but instead of memories of the hotel's beauty, I'm left with feelings of just being another sucker of a bait and switch.

BAIT AND SWITCH!

Don’t be fooled like me. Online, I was enchanted by the artistic element, the history, and the outdoor spaces. But the rooms are moldy. It triggered a migraine for me. They advertise breakfast, but there is none. There is a little coffee,  but that runs  out quickly. The staff must get badgered with complaints day in and day out because they all respond like abused children.  Don’t expect anything but a pretty hefty bill. Never again for me.

Take a hard pass

I have luckily stayed in the Inn while in Old San Juan and will no longer stay anywhere else when I am in Puerto Rico.  It offers so much for everyone, including my 14 year old son.  He found a great nook to read and daydream and I found paintings and books that along with a relaxing environment to truly unwind and enjoy the breezes of the Atlantic and the sun of this beautiful island.  Reflecting honestly, as an artist I cannot help but love this place.   But it is not just for artists to love.   It is filled with romance, history and the current times and moments of today all together surrounding you at once.  Yes, the long history of the place adds to its allure.  It’s European influence, remnants of the elegance of the colonial time, the sun touching the wood and stone as it has for decades.  This is lovely for lovers of romance and history and aesthetically lovely to behold.   There is also a wonderful and very cool club in which strangers break bread with one another bounded together by the sustenance of nourishing food and music.   Each night I heard a different type of music float up to wherever my nook was for the evening and it enticed me there.  Once it was jazz, another evening a DJs hip moving tunes.  And when I arrived each time, all were enjoying the experience the Cannon Club.  As I wandered in knowing I would not be disappointed, others from the streets always curious, found their ways in to be a part of it, this the unnamable but felt ‘thing’ of the Gallery Inn.   The location is off the beaten path away from all the noise of traffic, yet one may access anywhere they wish within minutes; the port, the fort, the galleries.   The Gallery Inn is not just historical, but a place of today and now and the place to experience whatever one’s age, interests and tastes.  

Charming does not fully describe The Gallery Inn, while it definitely is.  It is also grandly historical, stylishly romantic, and energetically of today as anything built with creativity and love is.   There are no TVs in the rooms, you won’t need them.  Just allow yourself to be charmed and enveloped in the lure of The Gallery Inn.  

Please give yourself the gift of staying here while in Puerto Rico.  

A Gift of Old San Juan

The hotel is beautiful and located in a very nice location. Our room was roomy and had a great view of the ocean. My only caution is that if you take a room towards the front of the hotel that faces the ocean, you're also facing the main road which is quite busy on the weekend nights.  The noise from loud car stereos can keep you up until 2 or 3 am.  If you're not planning to stay out late on the weekends, it is best that you take a room that is not facing the ocean.   The rooftop deck was amazing as was the inner court yards.  The wading pool was nice to have, a bit smaller than expected, but nice.  There are no TVs in the rooms but the internet worked well.  Don't plan to park a car in this area. It's too difficult to find parking. Everything in old San Juan is walkable though. 

A cute hotel in a great location. 

My husband, 2 yo and I stayed here for 2 nights. We got a one of the bigger rooms (2 connecting rooms) that overlook the courtyard. Upon arriving at 11pm we found that only 1 room had AC and so the other room was too hot to sleep especially for a child. The bed had dirt all over it and there was a used bar of soap in the shower. When I mentioned this to receptionist they were unapologetic. I also electrocuted myself on the bathroom light switch. Overall- this is a 450 yo building and so expect old everything…the location was excellent but overall we were disappointed with our stay and for the price.
