I decided to make a last minute booking in lovely Somerset and was lucky enough to have found a vacancy over the bank holiday weekend  at the Barrington Boat  in the beautiful village of Barrington. 

The room was one of four overlooking the beautifully landscaped garden of the restaurant . Compact yet perfectly proportioned and immaculately cleaned the room was well furnished , came with a good sized satellite tv , great Nespresso coffee machine and fresh milk . The bed was large , wonderfully comfortable with good quality furnishings and pillows (plus spare if needed!)  The bathroom was of a good size , powerful shower and quality bath products … needless to say we slept well ! 

The food , however the was something else . We are fortunate enough to have eaten in some wonderful restaurants and this competes / exceeds the experience of the best of them . The quality of the ingredients , presentation and preparation by Alasdair and the kitchen was superb. My wife and I both had the fillet steak for our main course (Saturday evening meal) which at £38 we did not feel was overpriced . We also both enjoyed a traditional Sunday roast the following day which did not disappoint and both commented that it was the best we’d had . 

Breakfast was provided with ample choice and the quality of ingredients followed . 

Drinks were reasonable with ample choice and the service provided by Victoria and the front of house staff was efficient , friendly yet not overbearing .

We had a fantastic weekend and will definitely return.

Wow !!!!

Lovely pub restaurant in picturesque village.  Really nice ambience with friendly, polite efficient staff.  Had the Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings which was wonderful (gravy came already on plate but would have preferred it in a jug as there was not enough).  Enjoyed lovely Cotes du Rhône with lunch.

Then ordered the cheese plate which was so disappointing.  The cheeses themselves were wonderful as was the house chutney but for some reason it was served in ‘a bowl’ and served with Carr’s crackers which we thought a really lazy option when there are so many artisan options out there.  It just looked really sad after what was an excellent lunch.

Also as mentioned, the staff were all lovely but I think the establishment would have been elevated if they had some sort of uniformed, branded clothing.

But would definitely visit again.

Excellent pub restaurant in beautiful village.

We know the Barrington Boar well and asked Victoria and Al to host a celebration lunch for us which ended up being for 29. We had the whole pub to ourselves and the event was faultless. Drinks in the newly-created garden were followed by the full 3-course lunch menu in the pub and restaurant, served efficiently with a friendly and attentive eye for detail. Most important was that everything was absolutely delicious and looked wonderful. Thank you for a memorable day; everyone was on absolutely top form.

Celebration Lunch for 29 of us - FIVE-STAR

Very nice food and friendly flexible owner.  At the moment they are offering a set menu with a few light bites.  Everything we had was nicely cooked and presented and there was nothing to fault.  Highly recommended if you are in the area.

Very nice lunch

First ever visit here as I live about 10 miles away, and was attending in a large group for a pre Christmas get together with friends.

I had always heard great reviews about this lovely village country pub and have to say it certainly delivered.

There was  a great choice, goose, chicken, beef all served in different styles, I opted for the slow roasted beef which was a feather cut slow roasted for 12 hours that absolutely melted in your mouth without doubt one of the nicest pieces of Sunday beef I have ever tasted. 

The desserts were again fantastic. 

Everything here is home cooked and you can see why it has so many great reviews. 

The service also matched the food. 

Highly recommended and will definitely be back. 


Sunday Roasted to perfection

Wonderful meal as usual at The Barrington Boar. It is such a great atmosphere and the food superb. We ate there last thursday evening as well and enjoyed a wonderful meal. Very friendly. Staff are lovely.

Sunday lunch

What a good / lovely pub - great real ale, the food however is beyond what you might expect. We had 4 excellent plates of food which were well presented. Basically the ale and food is a 5 star it just needs a little more coherent approach to lighting and decor to be 5 star overall. The land lady is superb and very attentive. Would definitely return.

Really enjoyable Sunday lunch for Mother’s Day, characterful surroundings excellent atmosphere friendly staff good menu and very good food, all in all mother was very pleased with it all!
Ps they also allow dogs which meant our saluki could come too!
Recommend this place definitely 

Excellent Sunday lunch 

We surprised my mum with a visit to Barrington Boar for Mother’s Day and it was brilliant! The interior has a lovely charm about it and we was pleased they allowed dogs in the bar area. The presentation of the food was beautiful and it tasted just as delicious ( Yorkshire pudding was amazing! ) my mum was presented with flowers as we left which was a lovely idea. Thank you! 

Amazing food and a special treat for Mother’s Day

Visited after the pub had been taken over fairly recently. The proprietor is a chef with a good background in fine dining so set my expectations quite high. I was not disappointed the food clearly demonstrated skill in the kitchen, attention to detail and top quality ingredients. We started with a superb chicken liver parfait then I went on to have a pie made with, beef featherblade, oxtail and smoked bone marrow which was unctuous and delicious. My only slight criticism was a very very thin flaky pastry which while beautifully light just didn't have any substance and left me questioning what it added to the pie. I think perhaps a buttery shortcrust pastry with a bit more substance would have been nicer to eat and would have made it a true pie not what felt like eating a delicious stew. Other dishes included a delicious beef rib burger which was topped with Ogleshield cheese, relish and bacon. For me all of the flavours when combined was a bit too overpowering and distracted from that lovely beef. Pimping a burger may seem the right thing to do to give it a cheffy touch but often less us more. Other dishes we tried was the a rather nice piece of medium rare venison with puy lentils which was superb. Overall it's obvious to me that the kitchen is capable and uses good ingredients and has sound cooking skills I will be visiting again and think the Barrington Boar is one to watch for the foodies amongst us. It's certainly not easy setting up a restaurant in a rural pub these days but if they hold onto their food values I hope and believe they will succeed it's about time someone in the locality turned out some decent food.
