Taipei 1949 Hostel

Since there are no signs and if you cant speak their language, you will have a hard time locating the place especially at night. Good thing the locals nearby help out tourists. The stairs are very steep, so not good for those with plenty of luggages, good thing we got the room on the 2nd floor. Wifi is very good! They dont provide big towels like the usual hotels just small ones like a face towel. Heater takes time to heat up. Very near a train station and there is also a market nearby.

First timer~

The hostel is located in a local market, even using GPS you might not able to find this hostel, no sign board and it's located in a hidden alley. A local shop owner directed me to walk in to a "building" and after i walked outside the building for more than 15 minutes. 
When I first reached the hostel, I was quite concern about the fire safety after i saw the stairs. It's so difficult to use it with it slope and huge step gaps, I need to fully concentrate on my every steps, I cant imagine what will happen if the whole hostel guests need to run and get down from this dangerous yet only escape way when fire hazards happen in panic and careless condition.

No more next time

We arrived at Taipei 1949 Hostel and immediately felt impressed. The cool design and relaxed vibe of the place is obvious and instantly puts you at ease. Being so close to Dingxi MRT also helps. It means you have access to the entire city, from what you would initially think was a impractical location. The MRT cost is super cheap and staff at 1949 are happy to help steer you in which ever direction appeals to you. Not that you need to, so much is going on in Dingxi, Yonghe District. We found our selves a delicious bakery from the opposite side of the main street with the tastiest sugar donuts I have ever had. 

During our stay both me and my boyfriend stayed in the top dorm during our 5 day visit. Knowing this, staff we happy to put us in bunk's next to each other. Upon arrival we each received a fresh duvet cover, pillow covers and a pretty mattress cover of your choice. As well as a toothbrush, paste, homemade body wash and shampoo; which was a really nice touch. We both found the bunks to be comfy and practical, the toilets and shower clean and the location to be nice a secluded, making for a great nights sleep. 

One of the best things about the hostel is its amazing style. Modern meets industrial, meets vintage. The art found literally everywhere is a visual feast. Especially in the downstairs kitchen/chill space, where all visitors are encourage to leave a doodle, picture watercolour or photo. All in all this hostel was a real treat. I would encourage anyone visiting Taipei to make this their chosen hostel. Its by far the the cheapest I've ever paid to stay in a work of art.

Hidden Gem

NOTE UPON ARRIVAL:  you will NOT be able to find this hostel without help from the staff.  Plan to call or message when you are a few mintues away or at the MRT station (there are payphones in MRT).

PROs
-1 minute walk from MRT
-Incredibly warm/welcoming/kind/helpful/FUN/community-oriented staff, comfy pillow, home-mad shampoo and body wash, safe for solo travelers, view from girl's dorm is cute, very clean.
-Nice to be in a non-touristy area.

CONs
-Mattress not very comfortable, but I slept fine away.
-They have weird stairs, so don't book here if you have a leg/knee injury.
-I recommend the staff put sheer curtains up in girl's dorm, as the bathroom is too small to change in, and the large windows aren't covered.

All said, I recommend this hostel!

Quirky, fun hostel in non-toursity area of the city

The decor, the design, the location and the staff all combine to make this place seem more a boutique hotel than hostel. Styled such that every inch of it's minimal space evokes a bit of Taiwanese culture or history. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, ready with suggestions and tips on things to do in Taipei. The room rate is very affordable, and the entire hostel is cleaned every afternoon. The only downside to this place is it's hard to find location. But maybe that's part of the charm =)
