Kolarbyn Eco-lodge

Picture a peaceful forest decorated with chanterelles, ferns, and sunshine breaking through the trees, and you have Kolarbyn. Situated a 40 minute walk from the nearest town, Kolarbyn offers an untouched view of the night sky, and tranquility in all weathers. 
Visitors to Kolarbyn are second to nature, with squirrels running in the trees, owls hooting at night, and fish in the lake, which is perfect for canoeing, or a dip after enjoying the sauna. The hostel offers an immersion into the natural world like no other, in a safe and comfortable environment. 
Kolarbyn’s owner, Malin, has thought of everything. There is a well-stocked pantry for guests to prepare a rustic and pleasantly simple meal, and I enjoyed cooking over the open fire. 
I count myself extremely lucky to have been able to stay in such an incredible place, and would thoroughly recommend Kolarbyn for solo nature-lovers, couples, or families with older children.

We had a great time at Kolarbyn. We enjoyed cooking our meals at a fire place, picking blueberries in the forest and the sauna and swimming next to the lake. 

Also a big thank you to Malin of Kolarbyn who sent us something we forgot during our stay.

We travelled all the way from the UK by train and rental car to experience the charcoal burner huts and were not disappointed. Very warm host and the site is so quiet and beautiful. Saunas, boats, heated bath, showers. Everything so meticulously crafted. Teenage boys loved splitting our wood. No issue with bugs at all. Highly recommend.

Kolarbyn is an amazing place for those who want to experience the wild Sweden! We spent two nights and get to make our fire to cook, stay warm and prepare the floating sauna. There are many activities to do, we enjoyed an evening in the lake with a canoe and spent some time relaxing in the nature and exploring.

It is a fantastic experience I would recommend!

The trip was incredibly enjoyable, an experience I will certainly never forget. I would like to say how friendly and welcoming all the wild Sweden and kolarbyn staff were. Our wildlife tour guide for the safaris Mary went the extra mile to prepare delicious food for us, which we eat at a fire before the safaris began. She would bring a vast selection of juices and low alcohol beer, along with delicious meals and snacks! During our 3 day trip, we saw 6 moose, 3 beavers, 4 frogs, a snake, a wild boar and 2 roe deer! It was incredible and by far the best holiday I have ever done, would highly recommend to anyone! 5/5 from me!

We spent 3 wonderful nights at Kolarbyn. The huts surrounded by the forest and a beautiful lake are just magical. We chopped wood and learnt to start our own fire to cook or to warm up the floating sauna. We woke up everyday with the sound of birds.  
Malin, the site manager (and her adorable dog :)) is extremely nice and helpful. Highly recommended!

We stayed for 2 nights in this magic place, run by 2 wonderful women in a forest. Everything was exactly as described and shown on the pictures. We stayed in a little hut and slept soundly with only the forest sounds in the background. We are on an extended journey through Europe and had no food on arrival, but everything was provided for all our meals and we did not miss anything. We were lucky to get to book the bath next to the lake and spent a few hours just listening to the sounds of the birds. This is the most magical place for couples but also for children. It is a must on your journey through Sweden!

This is a beautiful, quiet place to just get away from it all. We stayed for a night and had the most pleasant experience. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The amenities were great and we were never lacking. The Kolarkoja, as they are called, were so cozy and warm with their own fireplace. The sauna was nice, with a picturesque view of the lake and easy to take a quick dip in between sauna time. Highly recommend for fans of the great outdoors. 

In the wild, beautiful woods of Bergslagen is this gem hidden! We stayed in a hut for one night. It was as cosy as in the pictures. We also rented the sauna in the morning and we even took a quick swim in the lake. It is so nice here! I can really recommend it! 

We have just returned from a wonderful stay Kolarbyn Ecolodges. The location in a wood at the edge of a lake is peaceful and very pretty. The staff are very good at making sure that you have everything you need, and passing on their knowledge without being intrusive. They knew the dietary requirements of guests prior to arrival and made sure there was vegetarian and vegan food in the store cupboard, apples from the garden, and even biscuits to welcome us instead of cakes as one guest was vegan. The rooms are exactly as in the picture, but there is room to store bags at the back and under the beds, and plastic boxes are provided to store any personal foodstuffs so that they don't get raided by mice (we neither saw nor heard any). The rooms are cosy, we did not need to light the fire at all, and very quiet (although I expect there would be birdsong in the Spring). Food was not a problem with a choice of convenience foods provided. Lighting fires was easy - I admit, I used the fire lighters provided rather than the birch bark and flint method that we were taught.  The earth closet toilets were comfortable, easy to use and just like old fashioned privvies, and washing was fine, although the lake water was too cold for us to properly clean ourselves - apologies to those sitting next to us on the train back. We walked, and used the canoes a couple of times to explore the lakes, without falling in, and the sauna once (easy to use, although I still don't 'get' the whole sauna thing and why people want to heat themselves up just to cool down). The location is easy to get to, the ticket collectors on the trains made sure to tell us in English which platforms we needed when we changed, and our taxi met us on time. We didn't take a car, and didn't regret it. We also booked on wildlife trips with Wild Sweden, who coordinated very well with Molly at Kolarbyn, but I will write a separate review for this aspect of the holiday.
