Spread Eagle Inn

My son proposed to his girlfriend in the garden and planned a surprise for her by getting the families together at the hotel. We had to make sure she didn't see us. The staff were all so helpful and we were looked after by Julie and Katie as well as the restaurant staff. Food was lovely and the surrounding area is spectacular.

We booked our stay a while ago, and the Spread Eagle sent me instructions how to access the building in case I was arriving late.  In the end we arrived early, and were shown to our room by Harmony who is a very organised manager, so we could unpack, as we had decided to walk the lake whilst the weather was good.  The location of the Spread Eagle is terrific as the lake (photos will accompany) is 1 minute away, and a better start or finish to the day I cannot imagine.  We filled out our breakfast requirements and left it at the front desk, and went out to walk the grounds and lake.  The bed was very comfortable and although the water in the bathroom was slow in coming out, it was a delight to stay, and breakfast was hot and delicious and again Harmony was there to ensure we were happy.

This lovely inn, set within beautiful Stourhead gardens, was an absolute stand out stay for us. The location is a winner to begin with but the inn was so personal and cosy, mainly due to the staff. I have to mention Christine in particular, who is the most wonderful person and made us feel so special. She is funny and engaging, and delivers fast service with a big smile. She remembered all our names, how we were linked (as family and friends) and wasn't above a little bit of teasing - which was very funny. She never over-stepped the mark or misinterpreted our signals and needs. A really wonderful lady and a real asset to the pub. I must also mention Ben and Harmony who were also both very efficient and very nice and made our stay special. The bedrooms are lovely and the choice of teas, coffees and biscuits in the rooms was a bonus. The food was excellent. Great quality and very nicely cooked and presented. Breakfasts were very good as well, with two rooms available to use. The courtyard area outside was a very pleasant place to sit in the sun, with lots of tables, an art gallery and an ice cream/coffee stall as well. All in all, a tranquil setting with so much going for it. We will be returning at another time of the year to see how the beautiful gardens have changed with the seasons. Thank you Spread Eagle :-)

Very friendly staff,and lovely lunch , dog friendly the front part of the pub, check the times and days open as not open all the time ! If you need overnight stay they have 5 rooms . The garden at stourhead are amazing especially spring time , you can take your dog on a short lead.

Had a lovely lunch at the spreadagle inn.  We chose the Drovers Pie (pork and cider) with chips and cabbage and Feta and beetroot tart with salad and pickle. Special thank you to Sue the chef and Christine and Willow who were amazing hosts. Will definitely be back. 

We stayed at the Spread Eagle on the 23rd December for the Stourhead Garden Illuminations. I've been to Stourhead many times over the last thirty years or so and I'd always wanted to stay on site: it'd didn't disappoint!

We arrived around 3pm and were checked in quickly, despite the bar being busy and were given a good-sized room with a wonderfully warm bathroom. The room was spotless and had a very impressive selection of teas/coffee: Taylor's coffee bags rather than sachets were a nice touch. We then enjoyed some drinks by the fire downstairs before going to the gardens. 

When we got back, we were over an hour early for our dinner reservation but they wiggled things around and got us in despite it being very busy. The bar staff were great at getting guests seated so that even though they were totally full, it still felt cosy and relaxing. A particular shout-out to the American/Canadian (sorry if I've got that very wrong -I should have asked her name!) lady who was managing the bar that afternoon and evening: so welcoming, so friendly and seriously on it. It really did feel like we were being treated like old friends rather than tourists. 

The meal in the evening was good: fixed menu for Christmas which is understandable: I'd have liked an option of a starter rather than a dessert, but my partner strongly disagreed -I know it's impossible to please everyone! We both had festive tower burgers and fries followed by two desserts to share. Our waiter was really good at checking for nuts/allergens and found options for me that worked. 

After a couple more drinks in the bar, we headed to a comfortable, warm bed. I had expected the room to be quite noisy, and there was a gentle hubbub until last orders but then it was one of the quietest places I've stayed. Bliss!

Breakfast was served in 'The Red Room' -we enjoyed our full English and pancakes... the portions were generous and it was really nice to be welcomed downstairs. We then had a really lovely stroll around the lake and gardens whilst it was so quiet. 

All in all, a truly wonderful visit. I think we'll come again, but maybe in the summer so we can see it in two different seasons. 

After a perfect trip seeing the fantastic Christmas light show at Stourhead, we decided that as ‘The Spread Eagle’ pub was open we would venture in for a festive drink. We were greeting by Christine (the bar manager), who immediately made us both feel very welcome, she took the drinks order at the bar and told us to sit down, as she would bring the drinks over. We joined a couple of guests at a table and were made to feel welcome by them, due to the interaction Christine gave both us and the couple. Christine then continued to welcome guests, see guests out of the pub and creating a happy and relaxed atmosphere. She continued to be attentive until we left, she led us to the door (like old friends), sharing laughs and we said we would definitely be back, which Christine seemed happy about, she even asked our names too. Christine is an absolute asset to the The Spread Eagle and long may she continue to work there. Looking forward to seeing her and her team again soon. Simon and Roger ❤️❤️🎄🎄

Four of us had lunch in the bar with 4 dogs. We knew it was first come first served and we were happy to wait a short while for a table. 
Delicious food, good real ale and friendly service. My wife and I had the cheese and ham ploughman’s (quality gammon) and the butter milk chicken burger with chips and superb onion rings. What more could you ask for?

I stayed here in August for 3 nights whilst visiting family nearby. It was a lovely experience, the room was very cozy and warm, excellent size and generous bathroom.  Plenty of storage and amenities in room. Best of all was the fabulous breakfast! The staff, service and food were all perfect. Coupled with the beautiful grounds and nearby sights this was a perfect choice for my stay. Would not hesitate to return the next time in UK.

To be assured of a table st this delightful Inn in stunning surroundings it is best to book by telephone or person to assure yourself of a table. Certainly this is true at popular times. 
The menu range from baguettes to beef stroganoff to homemade quiche as well as fish and chips to die for is excellent being served in a timely way by serving staff. 
As far as we were concerned Ben was outstanding and a great asset to the organisation. 
Choose a window table and you can imagine you are back in the 19th century and you will be transported to a world of delight!

Romantic proposal

We booked the day  before to combine a visit to Stourhead  gardens. We were greeted by helpful staff with a good choice of dishes on the menu both for us and grandson. drinks served first but   we didn't have long to wait for our food which was well presented and tasty/ we had parked at the top for the gardens but there are some spaces closer to the Inn for customers. it is worth booking in advance  as we were led straight to a table inside which is only for  reservations.

friendly , efficient staff.

We were greeted with a very warm welcome and taken to a table in the dining room where we received excellent service.  We all chose the mediterranean vegetable tart served with chunky chips and a salad, the tart was very tasty with a good herb pastry case.  The drinks menu had a great selection of soft drinks.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our impromptu visit and would definitely eat at the Inn again.
