Remhay Hotel

After staying in several different hotels in Aksum (and around Ethiopia), Remhai hotel met our travel needs very well-- very large rooms compared to other hotels, clean and comfortable beds, windows that shut! and staff who were very helpful and attentive. Food at the restaurant was excellent, a bonus recreation room in the courtyard that provided some unexpected entertainment. Balance of affordable price and comfort was our consideration, and Remhai met the bill. Would definitely recommend. Wifi was included in the room, but was not working at all at the time of our stay. Disappointing, but not surprising considering other hotels in the area have similar problems.

Above Average hotel for Ethiopia; Very helpful, friendly staff, Recommend for Aksum/Axum

A little back from the main street, so it was reasonably quiet. Not particularly central to the attractions, but there are plenty of restaurants bars shops and banks nearby in an upbeat atmosphere which i enjoyed.

A bit run down, but large clean rooms. As it seems everywhere in Ethiopia, wifi was a bit hit and miss.

The hotel is not very central (some two kms from the center).
The place is in desperate need of rennovation, the rooms are in quite bad shape: broken tiles, rusty faucets, missing bulbs.
Water with very low pressure, almist none.
Breakfast was better, though nothing special.
Staff willing but with very poor English.

Pretty run down hotel

This hotel was probably once very good but now it is shabby and neglected. Our room was dark and depressing. It was on the back of the hotel and in the corner of the quadrant. We needed the light on almost the whole time even when it was broad daylight outside. The room itself was OK in that it was reasonably clean and there was hot water in the shower. There was no fan or mosquito net and was very, very hot.
The swimming pool was a complete joke with green slime all over it and the gym was full of broken equipment. 
Dinner here was basic and breakfast was passable.

Very fading grandeur!

Everything at this hotel is run-down: the rooms, the park, the restaurant, the swimming pool with its green water full of algae. There are routers but no internet, fixnet telephones do not work. At 7 a.m. the cleaning staff tried to open our dorr (without success, it was locked) and knocked at every door in order to find out, whether the rooms were occupied and could be cleaned.

Run-down and too expensive

Our experience with the Remhai has been one of the most bizarre we've had anywhere in Africa, and this is from a couple that have traveled extensively through 19 countries on this continent!
When our minibus stopped in front of the reception and we got out a man standing on the first floor started shouting at us, made worse by the fact that he was naked from the waist down with everything on display!

He shouted that we should leave as he is not going to give us a room due to the fact that "the water is not clean". He added that he was the owner and we should leave immediately. A lady from the reception came out and we told her that we had a booking, but before she could reply the man started shouting again. It was clear that he was indeed the owner and that the lady is petrified of him. 

Our driver had then a conversation with him in Amharic and the driver also said that we should rather leave as it is at this stage not right that we stay here. We then started to get back into the minibus and looked at our guidebook for an alternative hotel. Whilst doing this the owner stormed down the stairs (with shorts on this time thank goodness!) and poked his head through our window and again stated very forcefully that we should leave as the hotel is not clean and he is not going to give us a room! 
He added that he wants our business and he knows we are going to post this episode on facebook, however he is not going to give us a room. We explained that we are just looking for a different room after which he thankfully left.

Once we booked into another hotel we phoned the travel agency (Jamirai Travel) through which we booked and explained to them what happened. They were very apologetic and immediately offered to phone the hotel to find out what happened and came back to us after a short while. They explained that it was indeed the owner of the hotel and that he suffers from mental problems, but that everything is now ok and the reception is ready to receive us, which we gently declined.

Now, mental health problems is no laughing matter and although we feel sorry for the guy (and even more for the staff as their livelihoods are surely in danger here) we feel it is better to avoid this hotel until this situation is stabilized. We've spoken to a few guides in Axum and it is well known that the owner is not well, but more importantly they all advised that the management of the hotel is not good currently!
