My girlfriend and I had a fantastic stay at red rock. The views from the rooms at the back of the hotel offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the sunset, which you can enjoy from your balcony. The hosts were very friendly. They included us in their Lent celebrations, which involved barbecued goat and delicious home made honey wine. They also arranged a fantastic tour guide, Mulugeta Wodaje, who showed us around the rock hewn churches that Lalibela is so famous for. 

Beautiful views and great tour

The view from the balconey invits you to see the wonderfull lalibela Rock-hewn churches plus the lalibela satrday big market.we have enjoyed the sunsat 5:30 pm in every day of our stay.
We highly enjoyed the fasting food, as it is fasting period in Ethiopia.
Highly recomanded mid range hotel convenantly located in the center of lalibela and 7m walking destance to the churches.

Super Friendly staff and Excellent Manger!

Having the "mountainview room", we enjoyed our stay, it was clean, the personnel very friendly, and not to forget a beautiful view *really*! We needed to get accustomed to not very much water being available, but once we knew, we could just ask and the staff would switch on the pump.

Clean friendly and super helpful

I was welcome with a cup of coffee.
I got a single room with large bed and balcony that had an amazing view.
The staff are so lovely(God bless them) and helpful, kind.
The rooms have hot water, power socket, no TV(which is good, I got ME time). The hotel is walkable to churches and other hotels and restaurants.
Generally I enjoyed my stay.

They arrange for me transportion to Bahir Dar which was my next destny,B. Dar,but the driver was not friendly and he was charging me more than the local peoples who was travrl with me,they told me it was because i am forighner.

I and my girlfrind have been in for three nights at Red Rock lalibela hotel it is centrally  located and 7 minte walking destance to the famoust Rock-hewn churches it is really reasoabel and clean plus the manger shoma is super and frindly,the staffes are very helpful.

Reasonabel and clean Hotel Lalibela!

We just came back from Lalibela, this past weekend (2-4th of January), and stayed at the Red Rock Lalibela. I do not recommend this hotel given the number of better options in Lalibela. My perspective comes from living in Ethiopia for the past 2 years and having travelled around Eth and Africa quite a bit.

First, the positives: (1) it is about 10-15 minutes from the church ticketing office, (2) the staff are friendly* (I’ll explain the * in a moment), (3) the hotel felt safe for a family with small kids, and (4) the breakfast was okay (eggs, toast, coffee).

Second, the negatives: (1) no water (or rather water between 7-8am and 6-7pm), which is a problem if you want to take a shower, wash your hands, or flush the toilet, (2) no hot water (it takes 30 minutes to heat up the water so you have to time it perfectly, and the tanks are small), (3) rooms are super dusty, (4) bathroom have massive water leakage problems (flooding) with toilet, shower, sink, and hose (maybe why the water is shut off), (5) power goes out a lot (no generator or backup), (6) sliding door in our room didn’t close and we had to tape it and stuff sheets in the cracks, (7) there is construction all around the hotel and bars, whereas there are plenty of other hotels close enough to churches that have no construction (i.e. noisy, dusty, no view), (8) rooms overpriced for what you get, and (9) manager was not forthcoming about any of the issues, even after multiple emails, and when I asked him why he didn’t mention the water or power he told me “if I did you would not have come…plus this is Africa…”

As you can imagine, I complained quite a bit to get these things fixed. To the managers credit, he attempted to fix the leaks, he turned on the water when asked, and he gave us a 10% reduction in the price (still overpriced for what you get). With that said, it took a lot of effort (intense, intense discussions) on my part to get this done. I found the managers underlying view was "...just take it or leave..." Also, the women working at the hotel were nice and did what they could to help us out.

There are plenty of other hotels in Lalibela that offer better service and environment. If you are only going for one or two days, you can weigh the pros and cons but just be warned Lalibela is super dusty (no paved roads) and hot, and coming back to a decent room with water and power makes a difference. Also, there are just a few restaurants in town. So you either eat at the hotel or go to Ben Abeba or 7 Olives. There is no where to eat at Red Rock. Do yourself a favour and book a hotel with a restaurant or close to one of these places.

No water, no power, dusty, loud, far better options available in Lalibela

The best vegetarian meal I have ever had.
Served on traditional bread, it has a variety of vegetables that complement each other.  
Staff is very attentive and eager to serve your needs.
Jovial people that create a friendly atmosphere.

Food menu

The hotel is situated on a hillside overlooking the small town of Lalibela. We were lucky enough to get one of the rooms with a front facing balcony and the views across the tin roof town to the distant mountains were amazing. We were woken on a morning by the sound of priests chanting at the stone carved churches which are a 15 minute walk away.

The hotel also has a peaceful garden filled with colourful birds which is nice to have breakfast in.

Our room was small, well worn but clean enough. The one drawback was the availability of water. We were told there is a general shortage in Lalibela and the pump is only switched on twice a day, between 7 and 8, morning and night. We were the only guests for a couple of days so managed to get the water on when we needed it rather than wait to those times, but on one day there were some other guests staying and we missed the time so had to resort to a bucket wash. It was bucket flushing for the toilet too and the drains did get a bit stinky.

The hotel is situated alongside a main road which is currently being rebuilt. Therefore there is likely to be dust and noise if you have a room on that side. The rooms at the side of the building look onto local houses and a couple of bars which play music at night. Our room faced the garden so was quieter though expect some noise from local animals- an annoying yapping dog kept us awake one night. You will also hear the dawn chanting from the churches which is noisy or soothing, depending on your taste!

Staff are friendly and helpful and speak varying levels of English. Special mention must go to Tadesse who is a guide employed by the hotel. He met us at the airport and told us something about the area in perfect English. I usually avoid guided tours but on this occasion, with so much complex history to understand in Lalibela’s Christian héritage we decided to use Tadesse’s services for2 days and we’re glad we did. He made recommendations but let us choose our own itinerary and was excellent in both his English and historical and local knowledge. If you’re going to pay $50 to see the churches then it’s a false economy to not also take a guide and I can recommend Tadesse 100%. On the last day we joined him for lunch at his parents house close to the hotel which was an interesting insight into how local people live. The hotel is at the top end of town, about a ten minute walk to the popular Ben Abeba restaurant which is probably the best in town. We walked there and back every night with no problem- Lalibela feels like a safe enough place.

We paid $86 for 3 nights in early December which I felt was a fair price.My 3 star review reflects the water situation. Given our room I would have given 4 otherwise. However as mentioned above it would be worth checking where in the building your room is located.

Budget Hotel, Nice staff

The stay was excellent and the host was very gracious. Red Rock Lalibela is a quaint little place with clean facilities and the bed was super comfortable. The bed was firm, which is to my liking and this was the best sleep we had in Ethiopia. This place suited our purpose as we only had 2 nights and really only needed a place to lay our heads. Due to construction, they only had water at certain times which wasnt much of an issue based on our schedule and they were able to turn on the reserve at our request.
We didnt know what to expect as it was our first time so we asked for a guide to go along with our stay...this was the best decision ever! We were hooked up with Tadisse Selaw. He was a fantastic guide!! Very knowledgeable and accommodating, prompt/punctual, honest and well-connected. He has grown up in the area and knows a lot about the history of Ethiopia and the churches in the area. This guy bent over backwards and worked long hours to make sure we were comfortable. There were no surprises or hidden costs with anything he suggested. He even went as far as finding me a barber and stayed beyond his call to make sure everything went well. He invited us to his family home for brunch and out to the local watering hole for a cultural show. You will not go wrong if you need a guide, look no further! Some of the tourists we met had not had the kind out outstanding experience with their guides as we did with hours. At the end of it all, Tadisse was more of a brother than a guide. We felt really fortunate to have got him and he made our experience all the more enriching.
I would definitely stay at the Red Rock and look him up when we visit again...yes, we plan to visit again! Thanks Red Rock, Thanks Tadisse!
