Geeky Gecko Backpackers

Such a unique hostel! I felt very welcomed, I met so many great people there. Perfect for solo travellers. It is clean as well. I simply enjoyed the stay there and it just a five minute walk away from the center.

This is easily one of the most hospitable backpackers I have stayed in, with tons of character and charm. GGB is very warm, friendily and great for solo travelers. Also, very impressively fast Wi-Fi! I would happily come back again!

Great place with great people. Clean, relaxing environment. Would happily stay here for weeks at a time, unfortunately I had to go early but I will always Remember my time at the geeky geko. Excellent wifi!

If you're anything like us, you would have picked the Geeky Gecko's because you're travelling on a budget. We paid 30 bucks a night for a double room with a heater and TV, a large clean kitchen area with all the utensils and equipment you could ask for, and a large, comfy, sociable lounge. 
My advice for this place would be to avoid weekends (if you're old like me), as a large group of Aussie lads were very loud and obnoxious. We stayed here Saturday-Monday, and come Sunday the place was bliss. Staff were helpful and spoke to all kinds of travellers. 
Would have rated 5 star for value, but toilets and showers were absolute filth. Even when they're cleaned in the morning: dust, pubes and muck still stuck to everything. No parking as website suggests, but you can park in any residential area 5 minutes away. Would still return though. Proper backpacker way to travel.

Good times, cracking place!

Tip top.

Nice staff composed by backpackers only. So, this is why the hostel is totally falling apart as well. 
I use to travel a lot but I never been in a such dirty place. Look at the pictures and you will see. 
About the mattresses. Old and really bad quality. They were supposed to be changed at least 10 years ago minimum.

Dirty place 

Myself and a friend spend a grand total of 15 minutes in this place, before it's charm convinced us to leave. Five out of the eight people we encountered we're enacting Oscar-worthy, crack-cocaine impressions. There were mouldy meatballs in the fridge labelled "Beef. Free Food". The staff member who checks us in warned against using the toilet opposite the bedroom, instead pointing towards the bathroom down the hall. This bathroom (recommended as being the best on the floor) had three toilets; one out of order, one with the wall collapsing inwards and one with the roof sagging precariously. And to make it better, our dorm room came with rubbish on the ground and a toothless roommate who had clearly moved in for the longhaul with a teddy set lovingly on the bed. May I repeat, this information was gathered in the generous estimation of 15 minutes. 

I'm convinced this is Dunedin's version of state housing.

Checked In & Checked Out

I hab a reservation on this hostel since the date 5 july, today, exactly one day before the travel I received one email at 8:35 am let me notice my reservation was cancelled... 😲.
The hostel alleged proplems with my credit card (not proved). If you looking for a hostel in Dunedin, stay away for this place, totally disrespect and not profissional service.

Stay away.... 😲

This place was very central and that is about all there was that was good about it. The showers were not cleaned while we stayed there. The room we had was very small and had no external windows. The only ventilation was 5 holes drilled in the frosted glass panels facing the corridor. It was very noisy with the door to the lounge banging open and shut all night and the sound of stamping feet into the early hours.

Dirty showers and cell-like room

Room a "cell"; an internal room, ventilation 5 x 3 centimetre holes cut in the frost glass that faced the corridor. No means of blocking light entering the room at night. Toilets and showers VERY dirty - supposedly cleaned every morning. Don't think this happened for the 3 nights I was there. Towels and bathroom floor towels soggy and not replaced in that time. Kitchen usable but cleanliness a lot to be desired. Budget travelling does not have to be this way. Have spent 4 weeks in South Island and this is the worst!!! On the positive - the mattress looked relatively new!!!! Did not offer towels like all other places.

Will deter travellers

This place is grim Run down building which is in need of major repairs. Staff seemed fine during the day but need to remember that this is a building with paying guests and keep their antics to their rooms or the public areas late at night, frequently woken up, had to go out and ask it be kept down. Besides from this the walls are paper thin, the gutters all leak making heaps of noise too. All the bathroom doors slam so you can be awoken at all hours with a loud thud which is not very helpful either. The manager/owner someone who I believe to be the boss open our to up at 2am our first night to allow a person who had been double booked in.to one of our bunks and to do so he switched on the light in a room full of sleeping people and when questioned on this he was just flat out rude. There is no free parking you can park about a 10 min walk away in an estate up the road, heaps of good when ur backpacking and keep half your life in ur van. Do not book here if u need a car spot. It's central but grim look elsewhere.
