These apartments are well situated in the nice Carnegie Hill area of  Madison Avenue, a short walk to the 96th street subway and jut one block from Central Park.  

Our apartment was clean, but basic , and with all the amenities needed for a short stay. 

The WiFi was good and fast.  

The price, for NYC, was reasonable for three of us sharing the apartment and the bedding was fine with one sleeping on the sofa bed in the sitting room.

During our six night stay there was a problem, one morning, with the hot water but this was fixed immediately once we had emailed the owner.

The key collection  method is a tad strange and we were given the wrong key first time around.  This was annoying given that we had flown in from Melbourne (24 hours of flying) and it was after 8 pm.  However the landlord was extremely apologetic  and the correct key was issued so we were able to access the apartment and settle in.

One tip:   Take a sink plug with you, for both kitchen sink and washbasin in the bathroom.  Nothing was provided and when we asked the landlord we were told that Americans just wash up by holding stuff under hot running water!!!  It made us wonder why we, in most of the rest of the world, are subjected to carbon taxes and  environment  levies, when Americans get away with such appallingly wasteful habits as, it appears, part of normal day to day living!

However a plug WAS provided as soon as we asked.

Opposite the apartments is the wonderful Pain Quotidien, an eat-in bakery which served fabulous breakfasts.  This was a real asset for us and we had our breakfast there very day.

Do be aware that the apartments are situated in a building which has no elevator and you may want to re-think your luggage amounts.  The stairs are steep and narrow and smell funny.  But once inside the apartment we found everything was fine.

All in all a good and reasonably priced  experience in an otherwise  very expensive city.

A good base when visiting NYC

Upon entering the front door (double uncomfortable) welcomes us a tremendous stench of pee for all flights of stairs extremely steep and narrow. Upon entering the house by opening a sticky door of some crap to eat, there is a dark house (apartment 2A) and dirty in particular:
Upon arriving we go into the bathroom and find the tablet all wet pipi, the sink full of hair, covered in dust and a very low level. The kitchen was in order only that as soon as you opened some door appeared dirty rags, detergents and dry dirty. The dining table was dirty and sticky. The parquet floor filthy, all the furniture covered with dust. The small, dark bedroom with mattresses divided and noisy. After two days we decided to go away and I contacted either by email or telephone the owner, but without response. I had to write to customer service homeaway and protest until he answered. I asked for a refund at least in part, but of course nothing to do.
We stayed for our entire vacation at the hotel.

"ESCAPED" after two days of 18 NO REFUND

I'd like to start this review by saying that in 17 years of travelling I have never left a truly bad review for anything. I am a sensible traveller and a very reasonable person. I have stayed at all sorts of establishments: youth hostels, guest houses, B&B's, budget and 5 star hotels, and I have never had any issues or complained about anything because I am not fussy. When travelling, all I ask for is a good night's sleep and a hot shower in the morning, as well as reasonable levels of cleanliness (i.e. no rats or cockroaches in the room).

In this case, however, given the appalling service I received, I am going to go into every little  detail because my holiday was completely ruined by the absolute lack of courtesy, professionalism and common sense of the owner of this place.

First of all, when we went to collect the keys, we found a note saying that somebody would come to the apartment on Friday to change some furniture. They did not ask if it was OK, just imposed it. It is not clear why they could not do it before or after we had gone. Also their 'leasing agreement' is a list of house rules and (ridiculously high) fines for each infraction, such as $150 for blocking the toilet, $150 for not recycling correctly, $300 for smoking, and several others for damaging furniture or checking out later than 10am. 

When I read the bad reviews for this place I thought, as usual: "These people expected too much, they didn't read the conditions, they are simply too fussy". Personally, I have never so much as broken a glass anywhere I have stayed, I recycle way more strictly that they do here, I do not smoke and didn't plan to spend so much time in the flat anyway, so I was prepared to compromise and accept these conditions. The problem here is that, if you have such strict rules (that not even a luxury hotel enforces) you must also ensure that the place is spotless. This certainly wasn't the case: upon arrival we found worn-out, cheap furniture, greasy, unwashed plates and glasses, dusty surfaces, mould on the bathroom ceiling, a faulty shower head, a cracked bathroom sink and a mysteriously yellow-stained duvet. There was also no coat hook anywhere and the wardrobe space was virtually non-existent. On top of that, after a ten-hour flight, we found that the sofa bed wouldn't open. There were detailed step-by-step instructions on how to operate it, which we followed to the letter, only to find that the back was not aligned with the base and it would be impossible to actually turn it into a bed. We were too tired to do anything about it and called it a night. The next day I emailed the owner to inform him that the sofa bed wasn't working, and he implied that we had broken it. His communication at this point was quick and straightforward, and he said he would come and have a look later that same morning. Sure enough, somebody knocked on the door a couple of hours later. Without saying so much as 'good morning', making eye contact or introducing himself, this guy in a tracksuit came in and started taking pictures of the sofa. I tried to help him take the mattress off because it was heavy, but quite abruptly he told me he'd do it himself. Some woman joined him a few minutes later and said to him: "So this happened again, uh?" They left, and he said somebody would come and fix it on Saturday. This happened on Wednesday morning.

To be honest, I really did not mind any of this. It just wasn't a great start, but it was not a big deal either. The location was great, the internet connection worked no problem, and there was hot water. We could take turns sleeping on the smaller sofa bed, have baths instead of showers and wash the dirty dishes. It was only for a week after all, and we just wanted to enjoy our holiday.

The real problems started two days later. After a long day out, we came home to find that somebody had been in the apartment in our absence. It didn't look like anything was missing, but we were three women in a strange city and the idea was slightly worrying nonetheless. The heating had been turned on and the valve to regulate it was missing. The apartment was boiling hot (and I mean over 100F hot!), the air stuffy and dry. I suffer from severe allergies - I ended up in hospital several times with hives and close to anaphylactic shock - and within ten minutes of being in the flat my nose and ears were blocked and I had troubles breathing. I called the landlord but it went to voicemail. Even after putting wet towels on the radiators and keeping the window open throughout the night, I was unable to sleep at all. To my desperate 3:30am email, the apartment manager replied that he had in fact entered our apartment in our absence (which is, quite simply, illegal) and had taken off the valve on purpose, because, and I quote: "customers are not allowed to regulate the heating". I was fuming (literally!). He refused to give back the valve and the solution offered was to turn on the air conditioning or open the windows. When I explained that I was not trying to cause trouble but that I had serious health concerns, he simply stopped replying to my emails. I was ill from then on. I could not sleep longer than two hours each night because I would wake up with coughing fits, unable to breathe. I had to sleep on the unopened broken sofa bed because the other one was right under one of the radiators, which of course were on 24/7. I had to spend an entire day at home, and the remaining three were an enormous struggle. I was in such a state of emotional and physical distress that I lost 4 pounds.

I contacted Home Away to ask what I could do as I was worried for our safety and my health, but was told they are just an advertising agency and could not do anything other than forwarding my complaint to the property manager.

My holiday was completely ruined and I felt bullied and frustrated. The property manager violated our privacy and the warranty of habitability whereby tenants have the right to a livable and safe apartment. Nobody even ever came to fix the sofa, by the way. It became clear that all these fines they have in place are just so they can try and charge people for damaging things that are already broken, just using them as excuses to get more money out of customers whenever they can. I will not have another chance to go to New York again any time soon after spending all of my savings on this holiday, and I will urge anyone who is considering staying at this apartment to AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

If you are looking for a good size apartment with everything you need for a very comfortable stay at a great price look no further.  Apartment 4b was great and although you had to walk through one bedroom to get to the living area, this was not a problem (I believe this is unique to this apartment).

You are only a block away from Central Park and a couple of blocks from the subway (6 train).  It is on the upper east side so good if you do not need to (or want to) stay in the bustling centre of NY.

There is a great bar next door which serves good drink and very good food and others within walking distance.

My only criticism would be there was no full length mirror (which is obviously a girl thing - or is it?!)

Anyway would highly recommend for price and the communication from Oxbridge was excellent and everything was well organised.

Great apartments with a good location

We booked our stay here as the hotel we had chosen became fully booked whilst we were deliberating! Lucky for us though as this apartment was amazing. The location was fantastic and the apartment itself was fantastic. It was really spacious and very clean. It also had free wifi which was great for us looking up attractions and taxis etc.

On the first day we realised the wireless wasn't working. There was a number to call to report it, and a phone in the apartment so we didn't need to spend lots of money on our mobiles. We went out the next day and when we came back it was fixed.

The only downside to this apartment was that it was up two flights of very narrow stairs, a nightmare when you are female and don't pack lightly! (and we were there for a week so we had a lot of stuff!).
