Old Kapok Hotel

The Old Kapok is delightful.  It's well designed, spacious rooms, with nicely laid out buildings around the pond. The restaurant was excellent. The swimming pool great. It is the extensive grounds and gardens that really mark it out as unique spot and you can spend hours wandering around them. This is quite a special place to stay in this fabulous part of Chinese countryside.

January here is better than in Hawaii. There are no bugs, no mosquitos, the temperature is about 75 (rare in January in Hawaii). The greens are marvelous. The Karst Mountains are more beautiful than Guilin and Yangshuo and the crowds are no existent. The draw of course is Detian falls that is less than 10 kilometers upstream. It is on the border with Vietnam. A war was fought in this region in 1979 and the Vietnamese hawkers sell shell casings.

The hotel is large, the grounds are beautiful, and waiting for crowds that do not know how nice it is here in the Winter. In the summer Chinese tourists arrive by the busload but it is still low key because it is so far from anywhere. 

To get here you must take a train or plane to Nanning. From Nanning go to the Xiling Coach Station and take the express bus to Daxin County (74 cny) and then get a mini van (120cny) or another small For 14 passenger diesel van for (13cny). You may wait awhile for the bus connection. You can take the whole trip in a taxi but it will cost you 1200cny(the taxi people will tell you there is no bus).

The atmosphere here after you arrive is wonderful. It is landscaped, there are gardens, a pool, and very nice dining facilities. If you come you must ask for fresh fish (it is probably not on the menu but ask for it) the presentation of the fish is worth the order and it is delicious----you will eat the bones and all!!!! The rooms are nice with unique bath tubs that have a bedroom view (like are so popular in the better hotels in China.)

It is no cheap-----a little over $100 a night but the standards of this hotel compared to the other ones in the area dictate you stay here. They have no web site and they go by more than one name so they are almost impossible to book. Tripadvisor lists it but always sends you to other hotels because the management has not registered with Tripadvisor. To book look it up under "Dragon Bay Waterscape City Resort" on english.ctrip.com. 

The address is Lishui Biancheng, Shuolong Town, Daxin County 532314, China and I can not find a phone number anywhere.

Tripadvisor needs to contact the management and get the Hotel registered under one name. It is very confusing when the same pictures of a hotel come up under two different names. It is also impossible to google Shuolong----------google has never heard of it.

It seems the only place to stay in at detian. The grounds of this hotel is big, and the scenery is wonderful, just a short walk from hotel to see beautiful flowers blooming under the hills and the river which borders China and Vietnam.

A great hotel resort in the Daxin county, nestled in the mountains. Old Kapok, as its name goes, the hotel is mainly built using Kapok wood. Rooms are designed with wood structures, giving it a classy look. Rooms are equipped with huge glass windows, allowing its occupants to mesmerize in the scenery at different times. The resort area covers the lion mountain. With a 30-min hike, one can have a view at Vietnam across the river. A great part of the resort building is covered with Wisteria; the view should be stunning during its blooming period. 
A hotel to put up a night when visiting the nearby spots such as TongLing Grand Canyon & Detian Waterfall.

This hotel is in a great location very close to Detian Waterfalls.  The reception staff don't speak any English so you may need some help or download google translate before you come.

The hotel is shaped like an S and the rooms have an akward shape because of that.  The rooms are reasonably sized and fairly equipped with TV kettle, robes, slippers, toiletries and a very fast wireless internet. The beds were firm and fairly comfortable but I did find a bit inconvenient that they didn't supply a stand for suitcases.  The bathroom is well equipped although I was quite intrigued by the plastic sheet that they provide with the wooden bath... is it for you to put over the bath? Does it mean that they don't clean it? I didn't use it, just in case...

I was also quite intrigued by the toilet and the shower sharing the same cubicle, this meant that the whole space would be flooded for hours and you would get soaked feet every time you wanted to use the toilet... very strange.

The hotel provides these complimentary baskets covered with cling film containing fruit and durian biscuits... my daughter opened one of them and we were unable to get rid of the smell in the two days we were there.  I don't recommend you open the durian biscuits unless you are planning to eat them,  and better do it in the balcony, if you are new to durian, the smell is quite a thing, you've been warned.

The hotel has very nice grounds with lots of outdoor seating, there are very nicely landscaped gardens, we really enjoyed walking around and I imagine it must be a lovely place to go to in the summer.

The hotel has a restaurant in the grounds however, they don't allow meals to be added to your hotel bill which makes me think that they may belong to different people. The menu is in Chinese but it has some south east Asian dishes which is nice if you are fed up with Chinese.  There is a waitress who speaks some English but probably not enough to translate the menu for you.  I recommend Google Translate (again) for the menu, if you can manage to make sense of the senseless translations, you might be able to get something edible, thread carefully, though, there are insects in the menu! The food was ok, big portions but a bit oily and we managed not to order any worms!

Breakfast was pretty bad, there was no proper coffee, just this warm coffee, milk and sugar concoction coming out of a dispenser. There were pork and plain buns but they were a bit stiff and had a funny fishy taste, they had been cooked in a glass steamer as opposed to wicker baskets, that may have been be the reason. Apart from that, some fluffy sponge cake and some dragon fruit, the rest was all greasy stuff and rice congee. I should have bought some fruit the day before, I found the stuff they served pretty inedible.

Other than the horrid breakfast, the flooded bathroom and the stinky durian biscuits, everything else was ok. The hotel was a bit overpriced in my opinion, we paid about 1000rmb per room per night a bit much considering that it is in the middle of nowhere, but I guess it is all down to supply and demand and there may not be many other places around.
