No trip to Roatan is complete without a visit to Mango Creek Lodge!  Hubby and I stayed in the yellow cabana in 2018 (reviewed separately) and couldn’t wait to return for a visit.  While renting a house in Oak Ridge Cay, we took a short boat ride to MCL to enjoy Tita’s wonderful cooking and Manny’s delightful company and we were not disappointed!  I emailed in advance to see if they were open and plan our lunch visit.  They didn’t have any guests but welcomed us warmly for our visit.  We enjoyed delicious lobster tails and pleasant company.  It was our dog’s, Goliath, first visit and he loved to explore the beautiful grounds.  It was neat to see the changes and improvements since our stay.  The grounds are as lovely as ever and the old dock was repaired and looked terrific.  Thankfully, MCL has been able to keep most of the workers employed during the pandemic and we could tell that they had been busy!  We look forward to our next visit to MCL and highly recommend it to others.  I hope you enjoy the photos I shared.  Be sure to read the reviews of my other adventures and see pics of my island pup!

Our Second Visit to MCL

If you have ever been to Roatan, you know it’s a beautiful place.  The beaches, the tropical foliage, the crystal-clear waters are all world-class.  That’s why we bought a home here eight years ago.  We thought we had seen all the Island has to offer until last week when we were given the opportunity to visit Mango Creek Lodge.  The reason we had never visited Mango Creek; you can only get there by boat.  We were fortunate to meet the Owners of Mango Creek who invited us on a day trip to their hidden paradise.  We started by boarding a very nice tour boat in the little town of Oak Ridge.  After about a thirty-minute ride down the southern coast of Roatan, we could see in the distance some colorful cabanas built out over the water.  As we drew closer, this magnificently beautiful, but rustic setting began to take shape.  It is a tropical paradise indeed.  We docked the boat and went directly into the reception hall, which also serves as the dining and bar area.  The bar is set up self-serve and is stocked with all types of adult beverages, soft drinks and juices. After getting acquainted with the staff and facilities, we were given full access to explore the multi-acre gardens.  The grounds have paved paths leading to all corners.  The gardens are populated with virtually all types of flora native to this part of the world.  There are also free-roaming species of genies and other birds, some of which are native to the area…some not so native.  As we explored, we were told if we were very quiet, we might even run into some indigenous little people (very little people) who inhabit the area.  Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to see them directly, but we observe a few of their little homes built into the side of large trees.  As we continued to walk and climb, we found ourselves at the entrance of a huge suite of rooms built into the hillside.  This large cabin was beautifully furnished with a native hardwood interior and the furniture is manufactured at the resort in their own woodshop.  It’s a work of art.

After our exploration of the property, we returned to the reception hall where we were greeted with a luncheon of local fare.  We had worked up quite an appetite, so the buffet of barbeque ribs, ceviche, rice, beans, and more, all served with hand-made tortillas was consumed rather quickly.  It was delicious!

All that and the day was not over!  After lunch, we boarded the tour boat and explored the extreme east end of the island.  This is an area of very few inhabitants and even fewer visitors.  We passed by Port Royal which, in its day, was a British fort bristling with cannons and port to many wooden naval and merchant sailing vessels.  There are “cuts” or canals through the east end said to be inhabited by rays and even large saltwater caiman (crocs).  The canals are lined with mangroves and the water is so clear you can see every living thing below.  It was a truly relaxing and interesting adventure.  My two six-year-old grandchildren were captivated, as were we adults. It was a great day for all ages!

The resort caters primarily to sports fishermen, divers, and those looking for a beautiful and peaceful get-away.  It is also touted as one of the most romantic places for couples.  Mango Creek is located on a series of “flats” which are home to the grand slam of saltwater fly fishing…the tarpon, bonefish, permit, and snook.  There are not many places on earth you can find that combination within just a few acres of water.  For the divers, within eyesight of the resort, there are pristine waters dropping off the second largest barrier reef in the world.  It is truly a world-class diving destination.  As for peaceful, I can attest it is without question a quiet and peaceful place to be.  As for romantic…I was with my grandkids.  I’ll let you be the judge of that.  For me, I hope I can return to Mango Creek Lodge often.  I’m sure I’ve only seen a fraction of what it has to offer.

By the way, the Mango Creek Lodge is a committed eco-resort.  All its power comes from a self-contained solar and wind farm.  It has its own water system.  Fishermen are encouraged to catch and release.  The kitchen only serves species of seafood that are not stressed due to over-harvesting.  Mango Creek is also a very ethical choice of vacation destinations.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

We spent the day at Mango Creek Lodge exploring the beautifully lush grounds and getting to know the other guests.  Manny and his team have made it feel so welcoming, and it doesn’t take long before you feel like you are home there.  We had a wonderful lunch comprised of fresh local food, and every bit of it was delightful.  We plan on going back to take advantage of the prime spot for fishing with the lodge’s experts.  Definitely a must to spend some time there while in Roatan!!

Beautiful resort!!

A gem of a place!  Perfect for a romantic getaway, off the grid, away from the crowds, wonderful private cabanas over the water with a hammock and beach chair on your private deck.  Three meals included with an open bar (but you have to mix your own drinks). Staff was wonderful!  Manny and Tito were great hosts.  Would love to come back!

Excellent

What a wonder! Mango Creek was exactly what we were looking for: a quiet, spacious, peaceful feast for the eyes, and a balm for the spirit (oh, and and a treat for the belly -- Tita and Joy's meals were never less than delicious). Snorkeling was lovely, hammocking was warm and breezy, the flowers and animals and ocean and sky gave us pleasure at every turn, and we always felt well-cared-for by each member of the staff, who seemed like a happy family.

Magnifique!

Celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. What a find! We were so fortunate to be the only guests and we felt as if we come to stay with long lost family. Tita and Manny met us at the airport and looked after us every step of the way. 
We cleaned every plate of food that Tita cooked for us - delicious home-cooked food every meal including local lobster and shrimp.
Jimbo was the perfect guy who took us out snorkeling and exploring and had a knowledge of the island and its surroundings like no one else.
Joby took us fishing twice - where we caught barracuda, needlefish, jackfish, triggerfish amongst others. We caught our own fresh bait (sardines) and kept them in the bottom of the boat.
BUT the most amazing of all was living off the grid for a week, with the pristine Caribbean waters lapping at our feet from our over the water cabana.
We have traveled to many special places in the world but Mango Creek Lodge is truly the most special of all. 
Mango Creek Lodge along with Manny, Tita and the rest of the staff really is a hidden gem. We will be back. Thank you for everything!

A true gem of island living off the grid in the most spectacular surroundings

Our family really, really enjoyed our stay here at mango creek lodge for the 4th of July festivities 
 The food, the hospitality and the staff were all above & beyond expectations. Made us feel at home since day one. 
The fishing was phenomenal and Joy & Tita cooked our catch of the day, It couldn’t get any fresher than that!! 
We were able to scuba, snorkel and fun tubing, we also took long rides around the island on the boat, the garden walks and the cold beer dinner and history conversations with Manny for which we all enjoyed . What an awesome stay!! 
Thank you so much for this amazing experience, and quality time with the best staff.

The perfect getaway! 

If you need to unwind, relax and reduce built up stress, this is the place to do it.  Mango Creek Lodge and Manny & Tita, the managers, were just what the doctor ordered.  After 4 nights in West Bay with all the activity, the serene calmness of Mango Creek was greatly appreciated.  From the pick up in Oak Ridge all the way through our stay, the staff was super welcoming and nice.  It was like staying in a family compound except everything was taken care of.  It was great to just walk to the main building to grab a beer or soda, get a fresh baked cookie or while away the evening talking with other guests, Manny and Tita.  The food was varied and excellent.  The grounds are a gardener's paradise.  Don't miss out on a boat ride through the mangrove channel that split the island.

Unwind & Relax

My husband and I stayed for one week at Mango Creek Lodge, and we couldn’t be happier with our experience. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and they spoiled us with delicious homemade food, a clean and comfortable cabana, and snorkel and fishing trips. The cabana alone is worth the stay with the steady breeze keeping us cool and the lapping waves lulling is to sleep. We also kayaked out to the flats for bone fishing. Our trip was just the right amount of activity with lots of napping in the hammock. We will be back!!

Relaxing Getaway

We went to Mango Creek for our honeymoon. It could not have been more perfect. From the moment we arrived, Manny and Tita took care of our every need. We were greeted by Murci (the yorkie) as soon as we were off the boat.  The food was always amazing - lots of fresh fruit and fish! Tita is willing to accommodate any special requests - it’s like having a private chef! Not to mention the open bar...
It was so secluded and quiet, perfect for spending quality time together. We were a boat ride away from the rest of the island.  The stars were amazing and (with lots of bug spray) we stayed out at night staring at the stars and playing with the bioluminescent algae.
We were able to snorkel right off the porch of our bungalow and we even found an octopus not far away. When we wanted more reef, Jimbo took us out on the boat for a tour of the island and we were able to visit the mangroves and even snorkel by a shipwreck. 
When we wanted to visit other parts of the island, Jimbo boated is to town and Manny hired a reliable cab to drive us around. 
We could not have imagined a more perfect tropical vacation. Thank you so much Manny and Tita! And Murci, Mango, and Creek!  We hope to visit again soon.
