Mahatu Guest House & Hostel

I had booked for only 4 days but extended my stay for another 4 days because I loved the place so much:

* huge garden
* very quiet
* 5 minutes walk to restaurants, 10 minutes walk to the harbor
* great tour tips provided by the owner
* one can waste days doing nothing but relaxing in one of the hammocks

I very much appreciate the fact that the owner is running the place in an ecologically responsible way without the label "eco-hostel" being rubbed in your face all the time. 

Overall I can definitely recommend this place to anyone who goes to Leticia for a jungle tour or to catch a boat to Manaus or Iquitos.

It's a wonderful place to stay in Letecia.  I really enjoyed my stay here. It contains plenty of amenities such as: an outdoor patio with a bar, nice pool, hammocks, outdoor showers, ping pong, fresh juice daily, a lake with a canoe, and several of fruit trees. 

Don't be fooled by the road through town that leads to Mahatu guest house.  Mahatu is very clean and safe.  

I stayed here for 7/8 nights total before and after a four night trek into the jungle.  Gustavo the owner is a very nice man who speaks many languages and greets you with a fresh cup of coffee and cookies each morning.  Upon check in ask Gustavo if there are available beds in the tree house. Gustavo's tree house was super comfortable and quiet and it contains several beds with plenty of fans!  

I tried to go to town in the mornings or early evenings and avoid the intense heat of the day by taking refuge under the patio or in the swimming pool.   

I spoke with Gustavo a lot while I stayed at mahatu. He is a lot of fun to speak with and is very knowledgable about the area.  

As a witness your stay at mahatu will be much more pleasant if you stay on Gustavo's good side as he likes things to be in order at his hostel/ guest house. Here are some easy tips:

1) follow all of his rules which are posted at the entrance
2) pay up front for each night you stay. He does not like people who wrack up a tab for nights and drinks
3) Do not go behind the bar if he is not there to get your cervesa
4) Do not smoke in the patio area or put cigarettes butts out on the floor 
5)Do not open the door into the common area after hours (for extra Gustavo points help him move the tables and hammocks inside upon closing each night)
6)KEEP THE KITCHEN AREA CLEAN 
7) Challenge  Gustavo to a friendly game of ping pong but watch out he is really good 

 

I spent 5 nights in Mahatu hostel and I can say it's one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in. The place is beautiful, quiet and lovely with the dogs, the cat, and the owner Gustavo who was always extremely helpful... He was even kind enough to repair my dress when I broke the strap!! Very generous person. The rooms are simple but comfortable, the kitchen is big with everything you need and the pool is awesome in that warm weather. Mahatu is a small paradise in Leticia and the best place to meet friends and relax.

This was my third visit to Leticia and Mahatu. I love this place. There are a few options. Some offering more privacy than others. Very reasonable rates. My interactions with Rene, the owner/manager of the place have all been positive. He is a very knowledgeable and interesting man. He speaks Spanish, English, a bit of Portuguese, some French and German. He knows a great deal about Colombian history. He has an abiding love and respect for Nature and of the many native people's of the area. He has managed the facilities and grounds of Mahatu with an eye to honoring Natural processes. The Mahatu is a ten minute walk to the 'center' of Leticia where there are some good restaurants. Lots of 'casas de cambio' in Leticia so whatever kind of currency you are carrying can be converted easily and efficiently. (be sure to bring your own calculator and check the online rates before doing the deal). Tabatinga is the Brazilian 'sister city' of Leticia (Colombia). There are no 'border checkpoints'. Go to Mahatu... if you like Nature, you'll enjoy your stay at Mahatu

Peaceful and friendly hostel in Leticia

Mahatu... Truly a Natural ambience

On arrival this hostel seemed like a great find - surrounded by nature, on a large area of land, far from the noise of the town. We were greeted by the owner, a ..... man, who seemed interesting and very friendly, chatting with us at the bar over a beer. He recommended a jungle educational tour, which we did, as and found to be interesting, if not a little basic, and he also recommended a jungle trek with a family he knew. 

The problem started when we told the owner that we had booked a tour with another operator, and not the family he recommended, and asked if he could store our bags for us while we were away. He became very angry, saying the company we had booked with was run by "crooks", and that he was "really pissed off" with us. He then got up from the front desk and stormed off for 15 minutes. He eventually came back, saying "I want nothing to do with you. I tried to advise you, but you ignored me, so I want nothing to do with you".

This experience left myself and my partner not only concerned about the tour - which was completely unnecessary, as it was a great experience - but also rather angry that this gentleman felt he had the right to be angry with us, simply because we didn't book a tour with his recommended guides. I have no idea whether he gets a commission for getting us to book them, but it certainly felt like it. 

Funnily enough, later that week, after we moved hostel due to this incident, we met 3 other people who all had a similar experience with this man. With one of the women we met saying she felt physically threatened by him when he got angry because they wanted to leave. 

Sadly, this attitude and behaviour by the owner means I don't even want to rate the hostel, because I don't want to even suggest it's okay to stay there. To get angry at guest, to the point of making them feel unsafe, is inexcusable.
