Magome Chaya

The staff were lovely and very helpful and the food was amazing! They were very accomodating of my gluten free diet. Magome is a lovely town to stay in. Jeng also helped with planning our activities and bus tickets (much more helpful than the tourist info service). Recommended.

We stayed overnight at Magomechaya in May 2024 as a family of 4 before walking the Nakasendo. As a minshuku, the rooms are simple with just a table in a tatami room and futon you set out yourself, but it's clean and comfortable and we had a nice view from our corner room on the 2nd floor. The weather was nice so we slept with our windows open and it was so nice to hear the birdsong outside and feel some fresh air blow through after being in the city so long. The shared bathroom got a bit busy right after dinner, but was always clean. The shared bath area was uninspiring, but perfectly functional, clean, and got the job done. The front staff was also friendly, helpful, and spoke wonderful English. 

I recommend having breakfast and dinner there as things close up early in town and the food was delicious. The traditional Japanese meals are served in the dining area across the street at a specified time for everyone and though each room had their own table, it felt a little like eating in a communal area, knowing everyone was staying at the same place and all sitting down to eat at the same time, which was fun. Breakfast is served bright and early at 7:30am, so if you like to sleep in, you won't get to if you want to eat. (Nearby Hillbilly Coffee is great for coffee afterward though!). The food was delicious for both meals. 

The thing to be mindful of is that this is an old building that has been around for over 100 years, so there isn't a ton of sound insulation from other rooms and you're not getting lots of modern conveniences. This wasn't an issue for us (and we weren't disturbed while sleeping at all) and we enjoyed it, but look at their website so you know what you're getting.

The best part about staying here is the location. Magome is beautiful and charming. I highly recommend arriving early enough to enjoy the town as things closed up pretty early while we were there (around 4pm) and there are a lot of cute shops, the tourist info station, and a traveler rest stop (good stamps, if you're collecting).

This was our first experience with a Japanese style room on this trip to Japan. The room was very simple with a table and bedding in the closet that we laid out ourselves. The bathrooms were across the hall and showers were downstairs. The dinner was excellent, and was provided across the street in a restaurant. The staff went out of their way to help us get taxi reservations to return the train station. The owners were kind and helpful. We recommend the trout.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay.
The accommodation is typical Japanese with futon beds which were comfortable. 
The shared bathrooms were never busy and were immaculately clean. 
The place is conveniently located to the start of the walk to Tsumango.
Take advantage of the dinner and breakfast packages as places close up early here.  Plus the food is delicious and plentiful. 
Jane, the receptionist is delightful and speaks perfect English. 
Highly recommend this ryokan which is in a beautiful location. 

We stayed for two nights to walk the trail. Great family run hotel. We took advantage of the dinner and breakfast options and had some fantastic meals. Really welcoming hosts and a great location in the centre of the village. Recommend 😁👍

We stayed here overnight and were very happy with the accommodations. It was a joy to sleep on a futon again and the tatami is very well maintained. It is very clean and the staff is quite friendly. Make sure you get the dinner as well, as it is filing and delicious! If you don’t get the dinner option, make sure you bring food with you, as very little is available in the area after 5:00. Also, only cash is accepted, but there is an ATM across the street which is open M-F.

We stayed at this Ryokan for two nights before walking to Tsumago.
The owners were very friendly, the room was a good size and everything was very clean. Both the breakfasts and dinners were excellent and beautifully presented. We would really recommend staying here.

Very nice family guesthouse. Though the bathroom is share, it is extremely clean. At the reception, Mary speaks a wonderful English and is always willing to help and very accommodating. The dinner offered is plentiful and beautiful.

Stayed here for the second time, my last time being around 2018.

The hosts are super friendly, the place itself is right in the middle of the Magome Nakasendo trail. They have a few parking spaces behind the house and overall, it feels like a great option.

Just be mindful, this is a 150 + years old minshuku, so it´s not state of the art.

We stayed here for 1 night as we were trekking to Tsumago the next morning.  We were met by very friendly english speaking staff. We had a traditional room upstairs which was very large and comfortable.  We had the option to eat dinner at their restaurant across the narrow walkway but as we had some food of our own we used the well supplied kitchen area downstairs to prepare our food and mingle with the other guests. We were able to keep our food in the fridge as well. We were also able to enjoy a hot private bath!! We had lots of fun wandering around the beautiful old Edo era buildings around us. There was a vending machine inside full of an assortment of cold beer and other beverages. This Ryokan is a perfect starting point for the 8km trek to Tsumago.

Lovely place to stay before walking the Nakasendo

Classic Japanese style lodging

Beautiful location, great staff and fabulous stay.

This is a really nice hostel-ryokan to stay at in beautiful Magome. The Japanese room is very minimal but nice and big, toilet and bath are close-by on the same floor. Bath (onsen) is small and not very inviting. The traditional dinner is excellent (but not enough food for the teenager...). Staff very very nice and speaks English. And Magome is so nice, highly recommended to arrive here in the afternoon and walk around, stay the night here and start the Nakasendo trail in the early morning (tourist office to send bags opens at 9). Would love to come back!

A very nice ryokan with excellent dinner

Magome Chaya is conveniently located in the Nakasendo trail 300 meters from where the trail begins (Magome to Tsumago). I immediately booked this stay on booking.com because it is usually sold out and I can see why. The room is clean with ample place to hang your clothes and store luggage. The beds are comfortable and the room is fitted with an AC. AC is very much needed because it can get very hot during the day but gets cooler at night. We were there on the last day of September and AC was a necessity.  
There is a common space to sit around or have meal if you do not plan to eat at the restaurant. A small kitchen with common fridge, oven, electric kettle and cutlery is a great selling point of Magome Chaya. There are separate toilets for men and women, 3 on 1st floor and 3 on second floor with sink and they are all very clean. Bathroom is open and separate for men and women. If you are not comfortable to take bath with others, a tiny tip is to take bath between 6- 7 pm when most of them go out for dinner or late night or very early morning are good too. 
Check in process is very smooth and yes there is parking space. We had a great time staying @ Magome chaya and would definitely recommend others without thinking twice. 
PS:- The walls and floor are made up of thin wood hence one should be lucky to get mindful guests who are considerate about others. Example; closing door slowly or moving around slowly, as you can hear every tiny sound if you are a light sleeper.

Remains a great option when staying in Magome

Halfway up the mountain situated between little souvenir shops, food stalls and mini supermarkets seats the magomechaya guesthouse. Fully accommodated with kitchen ware and appliances, a bathroom on both levels for men and women though separate. Also has a living room and a place for prayers. Out the front of the place is a room with a vending machine and check in/check out, also has a guitar for complimentary use! Across the road is the extremely yummy restaurant that you can book beforehand which is preferred, I’m gluten free and the food was amazing for both breakfast and dinner. The food is a tad expensive but good for a well round, healthy and filling meal costing $45 per person. 

The bedrooms in the guesthouse are well sized for the number of guests per room. I stayed with my mother and everyone sleeps on futons with doonas and heat pack like pillows. One room per group, in traditional Japanese style, with sliding doors, robes and slippers. It’s quiet at nighttime as quiet time is after 9:30-10:00pm. If you’re not sure though, bring eye masks and ear plugs to sleep. Also recommend bringing food from other locations to place because if not going to restaurant then the choice will be limited and especially limited if you have any dietary requirements. 

The ladies who work there help with everything and are very knowledgeable and friendly so if you need to ask for anything, they are very welcome to help. Their English is amazing especially for a country town. 

The sunsets of this area are beautiful as well as the sunrises. The atmosphere is very pretty with the old traditional style of feudal Japan. The trees are beautiful as well, as I travelled in Autumn, being very red, though other times of the year will be lovely as well such as Spring with the cherry blossoms. The temperatures vary in the year so if coming in autumn the nights are cold and the days are moderate. Stayed here for 3-4nights and the price to stay was highly affordable. Recommend if happy to cater for yourself/party and want to experience the traditional Japanese style, also if you’re happy to live with people- like a backpacker hostel! 

Also plenty of walking trails and towns nearby, a very serene escape from the bustle of the city!

Traditional Ryokan 

We booked a triple room and were happy with our stay.  I have stayed just down the road previously and thought this was pretty common level of accommodation for the area. It was pretty decent for the price we paid.  And note that I'm pretty sure you have to pay in cash (If I remember correctly, it's been a while).

There's a small kitchen area so you can make your own food if you'd like.  My friends had dinner across the street (pre-booked), but they did not have a vegan option, so I ate some food I had brought with me.  There's also a lounge area downstairs.  We couldn't quite figure out the heat in the common area, so we didn't end up staying very long.  but there are a few different areas if you don't want to stay in your room.
One nice plus was having wifi!  It worked well enough while we were there.  The bath was also nice.
If you're looking for more of a traditional/basic ryokan experience, I'd definitely recommend staying here.  It's a bit of a walk up from the main road if you come by bus, but it's manageable as long as you don't have too much luggage.
