One simply can't have great expectations as a tourist in Gabon, Lope Hotel is a good example of just why. The rooms are clean and comfortable and airconditioned. 

However, the food should be better and so should the service. It has a long way to go in both areas. 

It also has one vehicle for game drives. It needs to have at least one more.

Nice Rooms but service could be better

Plus points 
* Late arrival at 3am at Lope train station,  the safari truck driver picked us up and dropped us directly in our room,  you skipped the receptionist . You don't have to worry about filling up forms until the morning. Very flexible practice, I like~
*pretty good size swimming pool with clean water.  (Make sure you have toilet paper when going to female pool toilet) 
* We had 2 dinners and 1 lunch at the hotel.  Pesto pasta and Chicken cordon bleu tasted really delicious. The grilled fish dish is so-so. There's always plenty of meat,  and just ONE miserable leaf of lettuce.  Alcohol and juice are plentiful if you like to sit and drink at the sheltered lounge area. 
* Individual chalets with 360degree view of mountains or Ogooue river. Complete with Fresh water for shower (bring your own toothbrush),  AC to cool you down,  power supply to charge your cellphone ( take note Power supply is turned off during the day 9am-6pm) you should be out doing some adventure trips anyways. 

Minus points
* Dining area has good view of the river and mountains,  But,  the staff may not set all the tables. You could roughly estimate how many families are here at the hotel when you see some tables are not set and chairs are tilted. In professional restaurants,  only during closing hours,  chairs are tilted to make cleaning easier.  The restaurant is beautiful and airy,  but I don't think the staff knows how to make the place looks cozy like a HOME. Only the cats reminded us,  this is a home away from home. 
* There is a game room with table tennis table and Pool table. 
Yet none of the ball is in working condition. Someone please bring a new set of table tennis balls when you visit them. They have a good number of rackets/bats. 
* During dinner time,  we were disturbed by moths, yes it's a rainforest area, but we got to cover our drinks and food, hoping not to swallow one accidentally. A lot of them started flying around us when the staff turned on the lights. I would suggest just using candle lights during the rainy seasons when moths are out.

I really liked Gabon and would like to return.  It is a beautiful country with very friendly and helpful people who helped me as a tourist even though my French was limited.  I have travelled to over thirty countries in Africa during ten different trips, and Gabon is up there as one of my favorite.  The cost was much more reasonable than I expected.  I stayed in hotels for approximately $70 USD in Libreville.  

The highlight of the trip was taking a train to Lope and visiting the park. The train left in the early evening and arrived in Lope around 1:00 am.  I initially worried for my safety about taking a train and arriving so late even though I am a big guy, but it was the only choice at the time since the road was in bad shape.  I was pleasantly surprised and felt safe in the train.  It reminded me of taking trains in Europe in the early 1980s.  When I arrived, the guide I arranged to take me into the jungle met me and another tourist, and he and his wife and child escorted me to the hotel only a short walking distance away.  I paid about $50 USD for the hotel near the station.

The jungle trip was good but I set my expectAtions relatively low since I knew the gorillas were not habituated like in Rwanda.  We ended up seeing jungle elephants in the jungle on the second day and then two herds of elephants in the savannah driving back.  We saw tracks of gorillas but we never saw them. I saw a couple of species of duikers and a couple of different species of monkeys.  I was hoping to see drills but didn't see any.  The treking is not easy and many times we bushwhacked and went off the trail using the guides machete.  It is not an easy walking safari like in Botswana.  We had to jump over logs and cross rivers using rope bridges or sometimes wading through the water.  It was a great adventure but I am glad I was running a lot before the trip to get I shape.

The only problem on this trip was that the train ticket back to Libreville was wrong and did not clearly stated the departure time.  There was only one train back to Libreville around 1:00 am and when I showed my ticket to the conductor before I got on the train, he said this was not the correct train. Even my French friend who tried to help did not understand the problem.  They said I had to buy another ticket or get off at the next station which had no lights and no people.  I had to buy a new ticket for about $25 US, so make sure you understand the return ticket.  A young Gabonese traveler felt bad for me and offered the seat next to him.  He again tried to resolve the situation with the conductor but it was useless.  He was truly trying to help so this gave me an indication of the helpful nature of the people.

I decided to leave Gabon one day early for São Tomé since I only had limited days already In São Tomé.  

I would highly recommend a trip to Gabon and São Tomé.

It all went well . I booked the hotel through booking.com and took the train . I did try and phone numerous times before I went to ensure I was picked up at 1am from the train station . I know now a driver goes every night to wait . 
Room was clean comfortable. 
Overpriced but I knew that .
Food way overpriced. Breakfast isn't included in the room rate . 
Safari was excellent I went with Remy . 
He is the only guide employed by the park the others are from lope village if needed . 
Stunning location . 
The internet is not free as booking. Com states - it says 0 euro for 24 hrs in all public areas . 
It's 2000cfa for 1 hour or 5000for 24 hours .
It wasn't working at the time anyway

Agree with all the reviews: beautiful, beautiful place; somewhat expensive, but that's nothing new in Gabon. We stayed at the Annex hotel in the village, linked to the Lope hotel. We were promised transport forth and back to the Lope hotel in case we wanted to go for a swim in the beautiful swimming pool, for instance. However, the Lope hotel service is the worst I have ever encountered. Remi is a super, super good guide for the forest, and a nice guy (!!), but the staff behind the reception / dealing with transport made us first wait for literally three hours, afterwards again for one hour, and threatened to make us pay for the transport back/forth to the annex (which was promised to be free at first) - with no other options for transport/ no taxis or whatever available.

Terrible service

Stunning location along the river bordering Lope National Park. The accommodations were nice, but the surroundings were to die for. Would love to go back and spend more time here (as we only stayed 1 night en route to the Mikongo Forest Camp within Lope Park). The lodge also offers safari drives into the park to see elephants, buffalos, monkeys, etc, or hikes up to the nearby mountain with a good view. Food was good, but service could have been better.
