We stayed for three nights in the bungalow. We booked 10 days in advance but no one knew we were coming.  We had no running water for the last 24 hours although the manager Wendy later told us that she suspected the water may run out ! Our bungalow was not serviced for the last night so the stray dogs went through our rubbish outside. The bungalows are very basic and are not fully protected from mosquito's but they provide mosquito coils and a net for the bed. The bungalows are VERY basic and have solar power and some generator power in the early evening. As we were the only two guests staying there we only had two dinner options to choose from. Meals were adequate and a good continental breakfast is provided and included in the price. There were no electronic payment facilities operable hence we had to withdraw cash in Luganville and leave it in an envelope for the owner to collect in Luganville. Bob and Wendy (the main hosts) are great people however overall staying here was a struggle and doesn't provide the carefree relaxation a holiday should provide as we had to worry about everything from not having any water to how we could pay.  Sorry but we will not be back !

Caution but there are positives

We would like to explore the area before going to champagne beach so we stopped to the restaurant for an omelette and coffee (Aore Coffee made with French press). It was so good that we decided to go back for lunch after the beach and we booked. We came back and I had the poulet fish cocked with fresh coconut sauce and vegetable. Again very quick service and probably the best Melanesian cuisine I have tried in Santo. I recommend the place and the view is stunning.

Super restaurant and service 

Thank you, Wendy, for making our stay at Lonnoc Beach so lovely. Our flight was delayed, and so by the time we'd grabbed something for our kids to eat in Luganville and driven up to Lonnoc Beach, it was past 10pm, hours after we'd said we would be there. No worries! 
Wish we had spent longer. The beach is gorgeous and even though it was the easter long weekend, it was almost empty! The family room was large and very comfortable for out family of 5. Despite being sparsely furnished, it had everything we needed.
Wendy also organised a surprise birthday cake for our son, and cooked a lovely dinner — try her vegetarian special (plus fish!). 
Charming simple accommodation in a gorgeous location. Perfect.

Charming stay in gorgeous location

Thank you Wendy and Bob for your wonderful hospitality. Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teenage kids) had a very relaxing couple of days at Lonnoc Beach Lodge. Our rooms were spotlessly clean, the food was great and it was such a relaxing way to spend a few days enjoying the beautiful view, beach and snorkelling. We hope to make it back to your place again.

2 nights is not enough!

We found Lonnoc Beach Lodge just by accident. We walked with our packs from the Port Orly main road and walked in...it look so clean and tidy and with amazing views :-)
Wendy came running to greet us and allowed us to set up our tent (we are budget travelers) in an amazing spot!

She cooked great dinners for us and her team took care of us during breakfast. Always a nice smile, a few chats and some internet training. 

We did not have to go far from the property. Spent 2 days laying around the beach and swimming and snorkeling right in front of the lodge. Locals came to swim at the end of the day and we had a good laugh with some of the women and children.

Walked to Champagne beach early in the morning to enjoy swimming and snorkeling before the crowds got there.

Perfect location, nice and quiet, amazing hosts and good meals. We also checked the bungalows inside to be able to recommend them...nicely done. They also have a family home for rent.

Check it out and stay and the Lodge...a slice of paradise!!!

A slice of paradise

This is a beautiful place to stay - the people are great. Don't expect 5 star luxury but the natural beauty and the willingness of the staff to please the guests is far more enjoyable than a stuffy 5 star resort. I would definitely go back. Ask for a trip to the local blue hole for a swim.

Naturally Beautiful

The first thing to consider when traveling to beautiful Santo, is that our western expectations of standard need to be reduced, as the island is very traditional and so are the bungalows.

The hosts Wendy and Bob are really lovely, and helped to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Wendy helps the kitchen prepare excellent food, including steak, chicken satay, curry, fresh fish etc. 

The location is incredible, the bungalows are right on the waterfront where you can swim and can do some amazing snorkeling and kayaking. 

The bungalows are quite basic, with power limited to a few hours per day and solar lights for the other hours if needed. The hot water is usually working, and if not, Bob will fix it. The beds are relatively comfortable, sheets are clean, and the room is cleaned daily. 

One of the bungalows with the nice outdoor garden showers, and has an open wall and ceiling to the courtyard above the bathroom. Good for the breeze, but not great for keeping insects and such out. Request a closed roof room if you think this won't suit you. 

Restaurant: 

The restaurant at the lodge is a lovely shelter by the house, a block back from the beach. The new restaurant and bar on the waterfront will be open at the end of 2017. 

Prices for a meal vary for around 1,400 (chicken curry) to 3,000 (lobster) vatu for a meal (~$16- $35 AUD). Drinks are around $500 vatu for a beer (~$7 AUD). 

The food is excellent, and at breakfast you get to try the most delicious tropical fruits. There is also wheetbix and toast, and fresh eggs on toast for an extra 250 vatu. 

You might also like to stop in Luganville before traveling to Lonnoc Beach, and pick up some snacks, fruit, drinks or lunch foods for those traveling on a budget. There really doesn't seem to be any shops near Lonnoc Beach. 

Transport: 

Prior to arrival you can organize a private airport pickup with the lodge, for around 5,000- 6,000 vatu. It's around a 50 minute trip or 45km journey to the lodge from the airport. 

We went with the airport pickup because we arrived in Santo after dark- and would recommend doing the same. There are taxis at the airport if you prefer, and you might be able to negotiate the price. 

If you arrive earlier in the day, you can catch a bus from the pacific united (shell?) petrol station in Luganville, the airport will probably also have buses. 

Buses from Luganville to Lonnoc cost around 300-500 vatu or 1,000 vatu per person with luggage. 

In general getting around is relatively easy, you just stand on the main road and signal to a bus (with number plate B) on it, or a truck/ute and if they are heading to where you need to go, check and negotiate a price. You could be in for a fun ride on the back of a truck/ute, hold on! 

Things to pack:

-beach towel 
-strong insect repellent 
-snorkel and if you like, flippers, you can hire these for a fee nearby but bring your own if you have them. 
-Reef shoes 
-water bottles (you can refill these at the Lonnoc lodge at the water tank behind the house) 
-torch and spare batteries

Champagne beach 
Blue Lagoon
Nanda blue hole 

Wendy helped organize a tour for the day to visit the blue holes and port orly which was great, more cost effective than hiring a car or taking a tour from a company in Luganville. This cost 80,000 vatu, or $100 AUD for between 9-3pm. 

It is important to note that a lot of tourist destinations such as Champagne Beach, blue holes etc will have an entry fee, ranging from $500 Vatu to $1,000 Vatu. 

Port Orly is beautiful, a small village with a stunning beach. I would even recommend staying in Port Orly for a few days for somewhere to relax by the beach. 

Currency: 
Exchanging currency in Australia is the worst option, banks take around 15% and travel exchange places 25%! 

There is a currency exchange place open at Port Villa airport by the baggage carousel just after customs, very good exchange rate so bring AUD with you and exchange at the airport there. Apparently the exchange place is open for each incoming international flight, but can't guarantee this. 

There are ATM's at both Villa airport and one at the airport in Santo. There are ATM's in Luganville and a few banks, these would all exchange currency if you needed. 

Santo is a wonderful place, and the people are great to get to know! A trip to Santo is worth it, but come prepared for basic comforts in a beautiful tropical place.
