Letaba River Lodge

The predator park is an excellent place to visit for young and old  alike. The animals are beautiful and well-tended. Everything is clean. Friendly and knowledgeable rangers guide interactions and answer any questions. This park definitely should be the top attraction in Tzaneen. A must when in the area! Our children loved it and so did we!

Went there after a recommendation made by one of the guesthouses owner. Was greeted with the warmest welcome. The staff in the predator park make you feel comfortable enough to get into the cage with some of the most dangerous animals and interact with them. They are really knowledgeable and stand by your side all the way.

We went on a rainy day which was a little sad but we were still able to encounter with the Lion cubs, tiger cubs, and other animals. Our Ranger was super great! We really enjoyed it - especially our 2 year old baby! BUT the restaurant service was Bad (sadly) - there was only 1 waiter. Our food was mostly good - the BBQ Chicken Wings was NOT BBQ chicken - the wings had Lemon & Herb Salad dressing on it and it wasn't served very nice. The Beef Burger was delicious! We waited very long for our drinks order & I am still waiting for the Coke I ordered. The Guy that seems to be the manager made a comment of the guests needing service - And then he just disappeared. I guess that because there was a function going on they were short of staff. Overall as always I will return (as this was my 3rd visit already) but it would be nice if the service in the restaurant was a little more on point. 

Instead of seeing 1000's of species of monkeys and birds at a zoo, this place was great.

Saw Exactly what i paid for. Lions, cheetahs, tigers the highlight.

Not that Expensive as well. 100 bucks

We stayed over for one night, but would love to stay longer. Very neat and clean. The game rangers are friendly. We enjoyed the knowledge about the animals and nature of the ranger Luke Schoeman. He definitely know how to deal with all the guests. He gives value to Letaba River Lodge.

The predator park and interaction at this Lodge is amazing. My 2 year old really loved the play area right at the entrance to the predator park and  the park together with dad. The Ala Carte menu at the restaurant needs to be improved to have more variety. But overall, i recommend this place for family or couple outdoor.

Great Value for money

 Well, from a distance and what one sees on the youtube, Letaba Ranch looks like a paradise. But in actual fact, those lions and leopards that you see walk around with the rangers are caged, and not everyone gets to interact with them, and if you do book for a game drive, you're luckily to encounter with with the zebras and impalas...no members of the big five are found on the game drive. Secondly, when you do secure an accommodation at the ranch, you're luckily to check out without even knowing that there's an opportunity to interact with the lions because this information is not explained to you in the reception. The place is good though if you just want to eat out or do some wedding events.

It was the little things that were missing that made our stay poor to average. 

Restaurant:
No Complaints, food was good. Very Pub and Grill style food, portion are good and its worth the money.

Terrain:
To get to the lodge there is a 2/3km dirt road, road is fairly well maintained and is easy to drive with your daily vehicles.

On the Lodge Premises, it would have been nice to see where things are once you enter the premises. On our visit, there was a wedding event starting, thus with a lot of people standing around and with no clearly visible boards for direction we ended up driving around and walking up and down to finally see the reception area at the bottom.

The Predator Park is well maintained and the animals are well cared for. Shout out to the Park rangers, they are well educated on the predators and the animal interaction was a highlight.

The Rooms:

Our first room...the key got stuck in the door... it happens..and they switched us to a new room for convenience.
Our second room: I understand that being outdoors, getting some creepy crawlies are inevitable. Having a small bottle of Doom would have really assisted with the uninvited spiders and flying cockroaches. 

The bedding: Sleeping was highly unpleasant, the mattress was so hard, it made it unbearable to sleep. We asked for a mattress change the next morning only to be told that they are unable to change the mattresses (I really don't know the exact reason why this was a problem) , So for 2 nights we barely slept. At least the Lions and peacocks kept us company through the night. 

No spoons with our cups in the room.

Cleanliness... All and all it was bearable. Our cups from Saturday night was not removed and replace with fresh ones. Instead it was rinsed out in our bathroom. It still clearly had the coffee ring...This was a no no for me. We had some spider skeletons between our bed sheets(I can accept this as it could happen I guess?) 

Maybe we were just the unfortunate pair and maybe it was just a series of unfortunate events.

The Little Things

We went to visit the Predator Park and although the animals seem to be healthy and well fed, it was sad to see them in small enclosures. Other such places in SA offer huge enclosures with grass and trees and sufficient space for the animals to roam around, as if they were actually in the wild. 

It is understood that most of the animals are rescues and would not survive without human intervention and feeding, but it felt as if this Predator Park was mainly for tourist purposes and that the animals were somehow being 'exploited'.

I will do better 'homework' for such places in the future and not support places like this. There are far better and more 'free ranging' willdlife reserves, where the rescued animals are kept in huge enclosures in their natural habitat, even if they do require food and veterinary intervention from humans. 

Just my two cents...

Sad to see the big cats 😢

So disappointed in Tzaneen. We are part of a tour and all of us were booked in at the Ivory Tusk Lodge, but upon arrival we were told that there is no room for us and we were sent to you.  First of all the manner in which we were treated at Ivory Tusk was  extremely disappointing. The staff were very rude. Secondly our room Was given to someone else and we had no place to sleep  hence we were referred. Thirdly the gravel road to you is absolutely horrific- the worst gravel road I have ever seen. We were not prepared for it, otherwise we would have used a 4x4. Then- when we got to our room another dissppointment awaited as this lodge is old and not well maintained. Only a few tv channels,  the air conditioners are very old and thd place in general is very neglected.
