Visiting Giverny was somewhat of a last minute idea for us.  Realizing that June is the height of tourist season, I booked the only two bedroom family suite I could find in the village and did not read the reviews; my mistake.

We left Germany in good time to arrive during the check-in window.  Due to accidents, it took us almost three hours to get through the Paris area.  We kept our host informed about our progress, or lack of.  She grudgingly agreed to wait until 8:00 for us.  We got there at 8:02, all was well.  The host hurriedly checked us in and left.

We had the ground floor family two room suite.  The rooms were clean and beds comfortable.  Shower and sink in one room, commode and sink in another.  Shower was barely tepid; towels were the size of hand towels.

There is a comfortable communal sitting room.  Wi-Fi is good.

A communal breakfast was served at 8:30.
Breakfast the first morning:  breads, one hard boiled egg and plain yogurt per person, margarine, jam, OJ, coffee or tea.  Second morning: crescent roll,  pain a’chocolate, macaroons, one slice of Swiss cheese/person, margarine, jam, OJ, coffee, or tea.

Cash only.  Check-out at 10:00.
Free parking is on the street in front of the house.

I thought the €250/night expensive for the quality of stay.  This was not the B&B experience I have enjoyed throughout Europe.

Think Twice

From what I had read, I expected a better stay. The front entrance is not very charming. Room was fine as was the bath but not en suite. There is a weird arrangement where you pull a curtain across the hall to separate the entrance to two bathrooms. No key to lock your room.Although the owner smiles a lot, she did not make us feel really welcome. She made some not too nice comments to a young woman who was asking nicely for hot water at breakfast, telling her, "This is not a restaurant." I have been in France for a month and this was the least "full" breakfast we had. The bread etc. were very nice but there was no fruit, yogurt, cheese, making for a starchy meal. As we walked around I saw much prettier places for less money. I would find a different place. Also, walls were thin and we were treated to our neighbors phone conversation for about an hour.

         Here is the good part. This building is quaint.  Breakfast was simple, but nice: coffee,juice, bread,croissants. Here is the bad news. The rooms looked clean, but we had ants in the bathroom. There was no hot water. Most importantly, there is bad security. The door to the house locks, but the rooms themselves do not have locks on the door. You cannot even secure yourself in the room once you are inside.  I had to take my valuables with me when I went out for dinner as there was no way to secure them in the room.  I blocked the door with a chair to feel a little safer while I slept at night, but I felt vulnerable.  
     The next morning when I went back to my room to change clothes after breakfast, the owner suddenly burst into the room without even knocking.  What an invasion of privacy. She said she thought I had left without giving in the front door keys.  Still not an excuse. While she was apologetic, I feel it is my duty to warn other travelers about the lack of privacy and security. 

There Ate No Locks on the Door to Your Room

BUT the very dangerous curtain arrangement that linked the Blue Moon bedroom to its allocated bathroom (this is not an en-suite room) is an accident waiting to happen!!!  We decided to leave the curtains pulled back and walk from our bedroom across the landing to the bathroom.

On arriving we were informed there was no key to lock our bedroom door, even though there were 2 locks fitted. This wasn't unacceptable enough but no safe in the room either!

We stayed in September and though the height of the summer had passed, it was extremely stuffy at night, with only one very small window and not even a fan to give some relief from the heat.  There was no wardrobe in the room, just a couple of hooks on the wall and no clothes hanger.

We were so disappointed, but as previous reviews have pointed out the glowing reports are from visitors staying prior to the new owners.



I so wanted to give this more stars***

It was really a bad surprise. The host Isabelle was very unpolite and strict! Check in time very tight and breakfast available only at 8:30 and really  poor.  It could be more clean and welcoming. Isabelle yelled at us because of a dog who honestly should be kept in the backyard. They didn’t ask for ID and no receipt about the payment (absolutely no correct!). Moreover no keys to lock our room. We really suggest to consider others accommodation in Giverny.
