We stayed at the L'Auberge de Combreux for 5 nights in September this year for the first time, a good find, would we be going back YES YES YES, we found the location to be good to explore this area of the Loire, including Fontainbleu. The owners, who i understand has only owned the Auberge for just over 2 years, were perfect hosts in every way, nothing was too much trouble for them to help us, yes the rooms could do with a bit updating, I would do away with the typical French wallpaper and  just have bright painted walls, please remember you are in a French auberge and a good one at that, this is a small detail and certainly did distract from our overall pleasant experience, a good bed and pillows, lots of storage, all were very clean, good bathroom and shower. There is a very comfortable lounge area in the main part of the building, due to the late September weather, we did not make use of the nice looking swimming pool, tennis court and garden areas.
We found the restaurant offered good food and good service, a Lady chef, the owners were very attentive in offering advice on the menu and wine options, we found some of the translation on the English version menu were quite funny, but hey relax we were in France, Samantha was our waitress most evenings, what a lovely girl she really tried her best to please, first class            

The breakfast table was very well stocked stocked, with cereals, meat, cheese, fruit etc. with plenty of hot coffee to set one up for the day.

Our overall experience of L'Auberge de Combreux was very good for an auberge, well looked after by the owners, if we had wanted more perfection we would have chosen to stay in a 4 star hotel and paid 4 star hotel prices, with no guarantee of having a better overall experience.

If we are in the area again we will certainly be going back to L'Auberge de Combreux

The reception doesn't open until 5p.m.  Thus, it is wise to arrive having pre-booked - or arrive after 5p.m.  This is a pleasant hotel and has a genial patron, who clearly appreciated that I speak French.  I stayed two nights and had excellent dinners from the set menu.  My room was a little cramped, but was comfortable.  Cars can be parked off the road a few yards from the hotel.  A short walk brings you to a canal with pleasant tow path walks and a short drive to the north is the beautiful Foret d'Orleans, which is of considerable natural history importance.  There were still a lot of wildflowers in flower in late July.

We enjoyed a delicious meal at L’Auberge.  François the proprietor is a genial, welcoming host.  The Auberge is old-world charm personified; a touch of ‘France Perdu’.  We ordered the menu at €34 accompanied by an excellent Chinon rouge (32€).
My entrée of cassolette d'escargots au fumet des bois was delicious; succulent and flavoursome.  My wife’s foie gras poêlé was exquisite.  Being in the Loire we both ordered the civet de sanglier avec panetons de patates douces which was excellent – although we both remarked that the meat was slightly dry and fibrous compared to other delicious sanglier civets that we’d enjoyed in France.  The sanglier was accompanied by a delicious array of seasonal legumes.  My dessert of poire pochée au vin rouge was tasty but not spectacular.  My wife loved her fondant au chocolat although the coulis de carambar was quite sickly sweet – un bon coulis de fruit would have been a better choice.
The restaurant is located in the Auberge conservatory which although warm felt slightly strange although novel - effectively eating outdoors in Winter!  Undoubtedly this dining area is spectacular during Summer.
We stayed overnight at the Auberge and were billeted in a chamber superieure Jardin (70€) located across the road in a lovely rustic old building.  The rooms were warm but quite basic and a little cramped.  A patio door directly accesses the garden and pool area which would be lovely in Summer.  Also it was slightly unnerving that the hot water ran a discoloured yellow-brown colour so we refrained from taking a bath.  Next morning we were informed that it’s a water supply problem and often runs this colour!
Incidentally a must-see in the area is the Abbaye de Fleury in nearby Saint Benoit sur Loire – a magical place of spiritual peace  and beauty.
Overall we very much enjoyed our meal and stay at L’Auberge de Combreux – a delicious séjour in a setting of charme rustique in the company of a welcoming host.

A warm welcome from the proprietor awaited us when we arrived at this attractive auberge. We were shown to our room which was across the road and opposite the main building. It was effectively a room in a small cottage in a courtyard garden; which could fairly be described as ‘compact’ and a little on the dark side.

There was not a great deal of room for much else apart from the bed, but there were small bedside cabinets, a small table, a couple of bentwood chairs and a TV. A built-in wardrobe housed spare pillows and a blanket. The bathroom was nice and bright and clean. A hair-dryer was affixed to the wall and the lavatory had been cunningly shoe-horned into an alcove in the bathroom. Apart from minimal toiletries - that was it; no box of tissues or tea/coffee making facility, which these days are usually provided. Oh yes, there was free wifi access.

Dinner was taken in the conservatory dining room and offered the usual range of three or four set menus ranging from 19 euros to 33 euros. My starter of fois-gras with a peach chutney was very good and the glass of Couteaux de Layon suggested by our host provided a pleasing accompaniment. We were in accord with our main courses and elected to have cod, attractively served with finely sliced cucumber as scales and atop a bed of fennel.

Puddings of apricot tart for me and strawberry soup for madame rounded the meal off nicely. A bottle of Sauvignon was chosen from the wine list which was quite short but reasonably priced at 20 euros upwards.

Some guests may not take kindly to a dog (probably the proprietor's) wandering about during service.

Being quite close to the road, traffic noise became a little intrusive from around 6.30 am but then we are used to sleeping out of earshot of roads. There is plenty of off-road parking within a few steps of the auberge. 

For those of an energetic disposition there is a tennis court and open-air swimming pool. We did not investigate but they may not have been open at that time of the season.

Mindful of our comparatively limited French language skills, the proprietor went out of his way to speak in a way that gave us the best chance of understanding him fully – many people in the French hospitality trade could do well to follow his example.

We will certainly keep this place on record in the event of us passing that way in future.
