La Iguana Perdida - Hostel

Santa Cruz La Laguna

Not just a place to stay, but very much a destination with a wonderful atmosphere. 

I absolutely loved my stay.  It really felt like a big family, with guests from all over the world. The dinner each evening was not only delicious, but very sociable.

The open mike nights, fancy dress, pool competitions etc were particularly fun. 

Although most people are under thirty, I didn’t feel at all left out. In my fifties I was accepted and included in everything. 

There’s a good variety of rooms, but found I spent most of my time in the common areas where the views of the lake are mesmerising. 

It’s really convenient as there is no long walk from the jetty, just straight off the boat and about twenty steps away. 

There’s also lots of activities on offer. I tried a discover freediving morning, which was fantastic. 

From breathing techniques in the beautiful yoga studio, to theory whilst snacking on fruit and then in the lake about a minutes walk from the front of the hotel. 

Next time I would like to try their Padi diving and yoga. 

The laundry lady was also lovely. She picked up each morning or afternoon and dropped it back off twenty four hours later. A very reasonable price. 

Happy hour drinks were really good value and a chance to cruise towards dinner time. 

Other people divided their time at Lake Atitlan by also going to stay in San Pedro, Panachel or San Marco. But I preferred being based at La Iguana and travelling by boat over to those places for the day. 

I’ll definitely be back.

A wonderful experience. (More than just a place to stay).

Our stay was amazing.  Great location and very helpful staff.  We participated in the pool tournament and had a great time!

This hostel was great! While I don't stay in hostels much, this was the best I've experienced. The staff are great, the family dinners are a great way to meet people and there's always an event in the evening where people get to socialize. I stayed in a private room which was clean and spacious although had to share the bathrooms which was a bit more inconvenient given my room needed a ladder to access it. For me being a bit of an introvert and needing a push to make friends this was the best place for it. The staff and people were the best part of this place.

Best Hostel

This is my first time in a hostel. I didn't realize it woukd be run by volunteers, who didn't know anything. I rented a "nicer" room with bathroom. Where to start. Service was awful. Try getting even breakfast in a timely manner and you will be deeply disappointed. We sat our final morning for 90 minutes. After 45 minutes we asked and they admitted they forgot, they woukd get that right in. Another 45 minutes that we canceled we had to go and they hadn't started it. I got violently sick the 2nd night. I don't know if it was the food or water but 3 days later I'm still sick. Don't try to get hot water for tea to help your stomach because you get brushed aside and eyes rolling at you. Room service never came to my room for 4 nights. The water was either scolding hot for 3 minutes or ice cold for 1 minutes so getting a good shower didn't happen. Besides the the bathroom was so dirty you just couldn't feel clean. No screens on windows so as long as you don't mind bugs sleeping with you..yeah.
I did do diving and the walk is ridiculous to and from the shed. I wil say Isaac is a good dive guide. He was the most helpful person there and fun to dive with.
Long story short this place is good if you are a floater going from town to town but if you aren't and want somewhere nicer skip this spot.

Not my taste

We had a lovely new private room with bath and balcony set off from the common area at this Hostel.  We are older and have done hostels and shared baths in our younger years so this was ideal. The staff is mostly volunteers and they are friendly and helpful.  But it is a hostel so can be noisy and the internet is only available in the common outdoor lounge area and a bit slow during busy times. If you are a light sleeper bring your earplugs.  The family meals are fine but made for budget travelers. Some local foods but some pizza/spaghetti dinners. Great home made bread and tortillas.   Santa Cruz is a quieter town than some of the others on the lake.  Don't forget to walk or take a tuktuk up the hill to the village.  The CECAP restaurant is run by graduates of the local culinary school and has good local dishes and an amazing view.  Amigos de Santa Cruz is an NGO with educational and nutritional programs. They also offer weaving and cooking classes. I had a nice one on one weaving class and came away with a scarf!

Good location for view, good food at restaurant, , but single room is very dark ( needed to use flashlight inside) and really small. too many users on one toilet/shower. host uses travelers as managers, not locals. would I stay here again? maybe- so it's a 3/5

OK place

Really genuine place. Took some getting used to since there's no hot water and the WiFi only works in one place in the whole hostel, but it's a great place to disconnect and the family dinners every night are amazing and great value for money at only 65Q for a 3 course homemade dinner.

The only downside is that the laundry service lost quite a few of our clothing items, but that's no fault of Iguana Perdida since the laundry is an external service. The hostel was super helpful and made up for it. 

Super rustic, super friendly 

Went for the scuba diving, amazing staff and a great dive experience. Dive instructor was awesome and very helpful, making the experience that much better. Everyone was friendly and the food was better than expected, with the communal dinners being quite good. Little noisy into the evening and at night but not bad enough that it's difficult to sleep.

Diving Lake Atitlán

We stayed here two nights on the stunning lake Atitlan. Hell of a vibe in the restaurant of a night time they do open mic night on Wednesday and that was really good fun even if we did butcher Tom Jones after about 10 cans and 4 shots of tequila. However the rooms are spaced around a fairly large site so if ya wanna get ya head round I wouldn’t worry too much about noise it’s very much separate. We got along brilliantly with the staff they were all very friendly and great at their job. Especially the manager who knows the place like the back of her hand! Would really recommend! It gets full here so make sure you book in advance

Gorgeous Hostel

The hostel itself looks lovely and welcoming when you first arrive. The staff are friendly and helpful and the place has a lovely peaceful air to it. The family dinners were also well run and lovely getting everyone together at big tables. The longer I stayed the more issues came to light though. They are small things but make a world of difference. 1. Our room had no door handle which was painful when there's two people and it will swing open if you don't lock it from the inside or outside. 2. Showers were lukewarm at best and the weather here just isn't warm enough to make that a nice experience. 3. Food in the restaurant was average and my order was forgotten or mixed up frequently. 4. Room just wasn't comfortable. There was no where to hang wet towels, bed was like a rock and walls were paper thin to the room above and next to us.
